I wonder if this barge builder / ship builder still launches this way. They should take a look on how others do it. Maybe they think this is cheaper than having a drydock or something. They got the pros to do the job though, you build them inland somewhere, these guys will come and get it to the water.

A barge carries various bulk commodities (steel, grains, lumber, minerals, etc.) from one domestic port to another. It is quicker, easier, and allows for the transportation of more material than what trucking or rail can provide.

would have been nice to know why she was built on dry land in the first place.
@allenklingsporn6993
@allenklingsporn6993 8 жыл бұрын
+austrorus Dry docks, especially in North America, are very expensive to build. Most harbors have very shallow drafts, so dredging is required to let the dry dock submerge. Depending on the sub-bottom and draft depth, it can be (and very often is) more cost-efficient to build these things on land and launch them this way, instead.

Just a thought here……. But this is obviously pretty large, so when does a barge become a ship? I do realise that a barge probably has little or no power and gets tugged and pushed, but in the start of the 20th C this overall size would easily be a small or maybe not so small ship!

I am not really sure but that doesnt seems to be more cost efficient than building a dry dock and build the barge in it. If you build one barge in your life time than this solution is better but i dont think you build such a barge with no know how so they must have build such boats before.

Let's build a multi-ton object on a moving surface. That would just be a recipe for disaster. Some shipyards just don't have slipways or drydocks because the depth of water is just too shallow and there is no economic incentive to dredge a bigger harbor.

@Mesdriver
@Mesdriver 9 жыл бұрын
