I'm a mammo tech, and I really like this video--sharing it on facebook, too.....but if you haven't had your first mammogram, you should know that we will ask you not to wear your tank top....it can obscure things. they kept it on her so they could show the whole mammogram....this was GREAT

I have a lot of aunts who have breast cancer and they only got the big needles something comes back from the mammogram and they have to go in there and test. I've had to have it done myself (on another part of my body) and it is unpleasant.

I just did my first one today at Hoag hospital and I was so nervous… but it didn’t hurt at all!! Thank god. It went exactly similar like that video. I have heard stories about being it so painful. But mine didn’t hurt anything. My gf also got hers done 3 times but different tech at Hoag. Hers also never hurt. Probably Hoag has better machine? It didn’t hurt. 🙏🏻🙏🏻💓💓

My mammogram experiences were never this good. As years went on it only got worst. There was one instance I had to have it redone because the images weren't clear enough. They compressed my breasts alot further than they show in this video. The pain was easily a 10 plus I got very nauseated and almost vomited. After the mamographer got into a disagreement with my doctor over what imaging needed to be done which I overheard I stopped having mammograms. I was in my late 50's and never had any sign of cancer found. They need to come up with something better then this. We women deserve better.

its a matter of physics. how can you spread or separate the glandular tissue and then image it? to routinely ultrasound a breasts would take hours and is not the correct imaging choice. MRI is expensive and takes more time and many patients cannot lay face down for that length of time. Sorry~ but for now this and the new 3D Tomosynthesis IS the best. A mammogram is uncomfortable but should not be painful. An entire exam takes less than 7-10 minutes and compression less than a minute. This is a very reasonable exam.

If I could have been assured an experience like the woman in this video I might have had a mammogram sooner. I had my first one two days ago (I'm 64) and in my case it was extremely painful during and after (and still!). I had a technician who acted as if my "why so delayed?" baseline mamo posed a threat to society and I think she smashed my breasts unduly hard as a "lesson." Mine were smashed A LOT more than in this video. She also had to scan one side twice because she didn't position it correctly the first go-round and I have a visible bruise on my chest where the top of the machine moved down against it. As I expected, my results were normal and, in spite of her repeatedly stating, "I want to see you back here in a year," I will opt for every two years and a different location. Surely science can develop a method that is not so aggressive--if men had to have their penis' smashed like that there would be a new method developed in a flash--but as women, we are desensitized to being poked, probed, manhandled and manipulated and we are just supposed to take it. Eff That! With all of the technology that now exists this archaic model from the 1960's should be done away with and a better method developed. I think if women started to refuse, en masse, to submit to these torturous events we might see change. FYI, and before anyone comments that I'm "being silly" or must have a low pain threshold, I gave birth to my children with NO pain medication and they were both over 8 pounds.

I turned 40 this year. I had a Pap smear today and was offered a mammogram which I refused because I asked the Dr how much radiation would a mammogram expose me to and she said none. I'm 45 and I was scheduled to have a mammogram earlier this year. My grandmother and aunt both lost their breast from cancer. I'm scared to have it done. But I know if I wait it could be a life or death situation. I've heard so many women say how painful the scan is. And I already have extremely tender breast, you are not being silly at all. We women are poked and prodded on much more than men. We're treated more like Guinea pigs. I think watching this video has given me the incentive to have it done. I also lost my brother to colon cancer in 2019. He was only 55 years old. He was diagnosed in 2016 1 month after my sister passed away from a severe stroke and a brain aneurysm. She just turned 50 a few days before she died. My parents buried 2 children and my sisters 35 year old daughter in a 5 year period. And then my dad passed away in July this year. So much death I feel lost and confused most days. But when I look at my grandchildren I know God is good and I must press on for them. Thanks for doing the video. Had one yesterday and it was horrible. Mine were compressed far more than this. I’m not sure that’s normal. I thought they were going to explode. I’m not sure it’s good for me...that amount of compression. She breezed through this. Not me and I had a colonoscopy without any sedation and I’d take 10 colonoscopies over what I had yesterday.

Just a personal opinion. I did train as technician and the idea is to have the two plates squeeze a breast the most you can endure the pain, so as to get a more clear image especially to detect microcalcifications. Just an idea. I think you don't have to endure torture just to get the perfect image. I would rather just do the test more frequently, to get any calcification in time before it grows. When you feel the breast starts hurting I would tell the technician to stop - some may actually say something like ok just one last bit - just say no. They will want to squeeze more - typically until you can no longer tolerate the pain. Of course, the pain vs thickness of the squeezed breast will vary from person to person - if your breast is more dense, it may be more painful. If breast is too small it also is less easy to squeeze. A woman with soft tissue will squeeze much more than a woman with dense tissue. Just remember that at some point the technician will have to stop squeezing any way. I'd rather have less pain but do the test more often. If test is a torture every time, you may be afraid to return that often. Finally, breast cancer is not only on women over 40. It does happen even well before, even at 25 is not that rare. Why not taking an habit of testing at earlier age? You will be less worried, and have perhaps a bit more courage and even get used to the test easier. I think it makes a good approach. After all I think it's fun when someone is taking care of you - just like a hairdresser. And have your hubby test PSA for prostate - it's a simple blood test. Colorectal cancer is also getting earlier these days (lots of junk food) - easy stool test.

1. You will not wear a bra during the procedure like this woman does. 2. The new digital mammography machines do not squeeze as hard, but do take a little longer which means you need to hold still a little longer. 3. Always schedule your mammogram AFTER your period, never during the week before.Your breasts will be less tender then. 4. Take a couple of ibuprofen about half an hour beforehand. 5. Caffeine can make your breasts tender, so avoid coffee, tea, chocolate, etc for two days beforehand.

Hi yesterday i did my second ever mammogram in my life and was treated like some of the ladies of Previous comments. In a very insensitive, falsely kind to cover boreness, manner. By a woman, not sure if doctor, nurse. And squashed and treated as a ragdoll as well. If Jesus protects me and the result is negative, i will Never do another mammogram again. But I managed to go and it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be...It didn't hurt at all...I told the lady who was going to be doing it about how scared I was over it, and she was nice enough to sit down and talk to me about it..Now that I made it thru it with no problem, I think that it has a lot to do with whoever does it...some ppl care and others don't...I hope my first experience will help you feel better, but it won't till you go...just talk to your tech and explain how you feel...hopefully you will have a wonderful person...

I watched this before I went for mine, apparently my expectation was too low. Actually the technician will squeeze them ten times harder than what is shown here, and you have to hold the position for a few seconds. Not unbearable, but this is definitely NOT what you will get ladies.

I had this done 2 days ago and I felt totally violated. I've never been manhandled so much. I had a training assistant and expected her to apologise for hurting me. She was just pushing and pulling me around like I was a ragroll. It also hurt! My boobs are always very tender, so having them squashed in a brutal machine was very unpleasant. The biopsy was more pleasant, even though that was horrid.

@@shellye.1341 I had two mammograms and then an ultrasound. It wasn't that complicated last year, but since my breasts are growing there was more area to cover. Before the ultrasound I theorized with my doctor that they were looking at a surgical scar on the underside of my left breast from neurosurgery. She said she'd inform the hospital. No more tests were performed. But I have yet to get feedback from Cancer Care Ontario like I was supposed to receive. Since then I have gone from a B to a C cup so I expect another misadventure next year.

She let the plates down half way then let it the rest of the way down manually so she don't hurt me. And she showed me the photos afterwards. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Same here!! I’m 26 and my left breast is obviously bigger than my right and I’m going to schedule an appointment after I have my period. They say don’t go a week before your period. Sorry if it’s TMI but we need to be real here. And my boobs were noticeable different in size like 3 or 4 months ago.. and I did have a discharge like breast milk.. I do have 3 kids but I stopped breastfeeding 1 1/2year ago... wish me luck.. and I think you should go to another hospital. It’s your health and it gives you a piece of mind after going for a second even a third opinion.

the technologist needs to feel the positioning of the breast. Any wrinkles, would not be felt. If wrinkles or overlapping tissue on image, it must be repeated. 2.) if you feel a mole, skin lesion on the underside of the breast the technologist may stop, put a special mamm-marker that shows up on the image on the mole, scar, skin area. The tech must be able to feel for all those very sensitive things. We do wash our hands before and after and the equipment is sanitized after patient use.
