"A Florida convenience store owner is preparing to file a federal civil rights lawsuit against local police after collecting more than two dozen videos detailing what he describes as regular harassment by officers against both customers and his employees.
The Miami Herald reported that since installing cameras at his store in June 2012, 207 Quickstop owner Alex Saleh has amassed footage of Miami Gardens police arresting people for trespassing despite them having permission to be at the store, as well as conducting searches without a warrant and in at least one instance, reporting a trespassing arrest saying one of Saleh's employees was loitering outside the business when video of the arrest showed him being taken into custody while he was working inside.
The employee, Earl Sampson, has reportedly been put in jail 56 times, searched more than 100 times and questioned more than 250 times over the past four years, despite Saleh informing police on several occasions that he worked at the establishment."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

It's basically why dash cams became standard in Moscow years before it was commonplace in the US. Sure the traffic is a mess so accidents are frequent but without those cams those Russian cops under Putin will either arbitrarily assign blame or extort bribes. So. Yeah. Not to minimize the fairly obvious racial motive here but it's not so novel to have to protect yourself from the forces of supposed law and order.

Funny thing is that I was constantly harassed by the police where I grew up from the age of 13 to about 21. When I was 16 the cops could now pull me over and they did, the harassment was constant. One month I just documented every time I was pulled over. I wrote down, where I was stopped, why I was stopped, who was with me, if I was issued a ticket, the officers name, the date and time and a brief description of the events. I was pulled over 26 times in 30 days, and issued 3 tickets. This is just the thirty days I documented, but for years before this is how I lived. Knowing that if the police saw me, no matter what I was doing, I was going to be stopped, searched, and harassed illegally. Especially from 15 on. You see when I was 15 my dad suddenly died, he used to be the one who would go in and stand up for my rights and teach me to do the same. One day I was stopped by an especially awful officer here in my hometown, officer McIntyre. We were heading opposite directions on a side street. I didn't even wait for him to initiate the stop, I knew it was going to happen. So I just jumped out of the car threw up my hands and said "what now, what do you want this time?" The cop says license and insurance, I give him the info he wants. I asked why did you stop me. He said you were speeding in that parking lot. I say OK what's the speed limit and how fast was I going? Of course he had no answer because he was just making shit up like they always did, and had never clocked me. I was just so frustrated, I mean this was the 26th time in 30 days I was stopped and harassed like this, I started to cry. This piece of shit cop looks up to me and says, and I quote verbatim, "Your not so tough now that your dad's not around to protect you" In that moment I wanted to kill him. I took the list to the city attorney and when he realized that documentation existed and that there was approximately 40 different people as passengers that would tell the same story I would he called the police chief and ripped him a new asshole. The city attorney demanded action against the officers. I believe officer McIntyre was demoted from a detective to a beat cop because of this. You just have to carefully build a case against them, while trying your best to be lawful at all times and respectful of the police that are harassing you so they don't get you locked up on some manufactured bullshit in the meantime. It's like a dance, don't insult them, but also stand your ground, refuse to cooperate as much as possible while NEVER ignoring lawful orders. Build the case they can't beat and document EVERYTHING just like I did on paper but also use cell phones, back then we didn't have them. It's your only chance against crooked cops.

Very well done sir, this is exactly what everyone should do in these kinds of situations. As difficult as it may be, try to build the case as you say, and ensure that something is done.

Didn't read all the comments, just gonna put this out there.. But how can the cops arrest the guy for trespassing? In order to do that, the owner of the property would have to make the complaint. Considering that it's a place of business that is generally open to everyone (with possible exception of people banned by the owner), there isn't really any trespassing unless it's in an area that the person isn't authorized to go in. So arresting him for trespassing is just utter bullshit.
@etherraichu
@etherraichu 8 жыл бұрын
Well that was brought up a while ago, but its no wonder you couldnt find it here, given the almost 6,000 comments. The owner had previous signed a "Zero Tolerence Zone" agreement which let police arrest people they suspected of tresspasing. The owner eventually revoked the agreement, but the police didnt actually stop.

etherraichu What I'd like to know then is, after the first time or two, what became their reason for suspecting him of trespassing when they already knew he was employed there and most likely on duty at the time? They leave out some of the worst details. - Earl was mentally handicapped. - He also was forced to plead guilty to trespassing every time he was arrested because he couldn't make bail and would have had to stay in jail until a trial date, and pay court costs he couldn't afford. The one time he did try to fight the charge, he spent 20 days in jail awaiting a trial, and even though he beat the charge, the judge still issued a stay-away warning, so it wasn't just the cops, even the local court system was in on this. - The cameras were specifically installed after 4 years of harassment, specifically to catch the cops doing it - they weren't security cameras he already had to deter thieves, they were anti-cop cameras. - Before resorting to installing the cameras, the store owner invited Earl to come live in the store, meaning that he was getting arrested hundreds of times for trespassing not just at his workplace, but _in his own home_ - The police also arrested many customers (all black people) in the store for trespassing over several years, often while they were waiting in line at the checkout, so it wasn't just this person that they had some personal beef with. - None of the police involved ever received any disciplinary action whatsoever.

Ok, I have over 17+ years in law enforcement and I do not know of any state where you can file trespass charges on someone or arrest them for it if they work there or live there. And some courts have even up held that you can not be trespassed from the only hospital in your town or from a bank that you have an active account at if that is the only branch in your town. As well as from any government buildings. This is 100% illegal and this needs to be released to all local and state media and yes, they need to file civil action against the police.

I don't think it's true that this guy has no legal recourse just because he can't afford an attorney. If he's been arrested 57 times with absolutely no cause then that's an insane case of harrassment. Aren't there civil attorneys that would take this case and sue the department? The attorney would get paid when they win the case. It's not legal to arrest someone without a reason to. Period.

its sad really its just a small time business. how often do small time store owners who hire someone from the local neighborhood to help out at a store to keep them off the street keep paperwork. He probably isn't even getting paid much anyway. I mean I've had jobs where I just show up then do work then get paid. the government jobs that I had I did sign papers and wavers and what not but that's a different story.

It's not only black people that get harassed. I lived in Kissimmee over ten years ago and would go to the store late on my days off because I worked overnight. I was stopped twice and both times they claimed my license plate lights were out. The first time they let me go and I headed straight to the store to get replacement bulbs. In the parking lot I looked at my lights, and they were all working. The second time I was stopped, the cop gave me the same excuse, and I told him I just replaced the bulbs. H walked over to his car and immediately walked back and gave me back my ID. A year before that, I was dating a girl that was going to a cooking school in Kissimmee. I used my sister's car, dropped her off, made a right on 192, changed lanes and drove under a traffic light. A cop stopped me. He told me that I blew past the stop sign before 192. I told him there is no stop sign there. He told me that I cut someone off when I turned onto 192. I told him as soon as I realized I cut them off (the road has a curve), I changed lanes. He THEN told me I ran a red light. I told him the light was just turning yellow when I went under it. He walked around the car and said the license plate was a couple days expired. He HAS to give me a ticket for something if he stops me. Many cops in Florida are dicks.

Just a follow up to this story, in June 2015 Sampson and several other unfairly persecuted men in the area won a court settlement against the MGPD. The chief of MGPD resigned a month later. The police officers had been given a quota to search/detain black males from ages 15-30 regardless of probable cause. Sampson had been stopped and detained multiple times, but it exponentially increased when his boss complained to the City about the cops behavior, that is when they started showing up every day and arresting Sampson, basically to try and drive him out of the area and to punish the store owner. They used the fact that Sampson has plead guilty to trespassing on the stores property on one occasion, which he only did because it meant they would release him and he wouldn't have to go to court, to arrest him time and again instead of just searching him.

If this is true, it is absolutely outrageous and I hope he is awarded millions. Unfortunately, I have to use the word "if," since TYT has a demonstrated history of slicing, editing and spinning the living shit out of stories like this. Like the other day slicing up a video showing a black woman being bullied at a "traffic stop" while hiding the rest of the video showing it was not a traffic stop; it was her SECOND stop after already fleeing and leading police on a car chase. So far, I saw 10 seconds of video of one unidentified black man, being stopped ONCE. If the store has a year of tape, why not show at least 30 seconds of stop-after-stop-after-stop? Why do they refer to 1 year of tape, but suddenly the example they give is of the guy being stopped over 4 years? If what the store has on tape is so compelling, why the only example refers to a period 75% NOT on tape?
11 жыл бұрын
No you microbrained fuckwad, the point in the other video was the cretin in a uniform shooting at a vehicle filled with children. Your knuckledragging opinion that shooting at children is OK under certain circumstances is where you have made your fundamental mistake, because you're a fucking born slave.
@RebornLegacy
@RebornLegacy 11 жыл бұрын
1. The rest of the video did not exist you fucking moron. You can find that video on GlobalLeaks channel that's where they got it from. The video on their channel is exactly the same. They don't have a history of selectively editing shit, and this one false example you provided does not prove anything. 2.That still doesn't justify the shooting at the van. Maybe they should have read the news article or something, but all they went by was the video, which was NOT edited you ignoramus. 3. Oh wow. So now you want to be skeptical. Obviously he has the rest of the tape, you're just looking for a dumb reason to find him guilty. They didn't have time to make a montage because the guy didn't release the hundreds of other tapes. He's a store owner not a fucking video editor dude. If he says he going to court with the tapes, why the fuck would you doubt their existence?

Florida has a three-strikes law, they probably hope they can put him in jail. Jails which are paid money by the government to keep people locked up, jails which force their inmates to perform work for large companies like Wal-Mart, Nintendo, Unicor and many more, all of this incredibly profitable. These same jailing corporations which give campaign contributions to politicians who in turn create these harsher laws and longer mandatory sentencing laws, they know which side their bread is buttered. It's a sordid web of legalized corruption and legalized slavery.

AS OF NOW (2017), THIS CONTINUES. ONE COP WAS FIRED FOR BLOWING THE WHISTLE. This situation as of 2017 has continued. Mr. Sampson has been jailed for trespassing at his store 19 times since February. In December, 2016, a Miami cop was fired in retaliation for blowing the whistle and signing an affidavit describing his (former) department's misuse of "Stop & frisk". Also, the store owner has been harrased by police about his "illegal" cameras.

I went to a HS that was right between a nice wealthy area and a poo area but the school was all poor students since the wealthy area had a private school. We had this school cop who used to harass, taunt and even slam students against walls, one day he slammed a new student a black guy against the wall for being a smart ass, well it turned out the new student was kicked from the private school and his father and grandfather owned like 20mil in local retail real estate. The cop had worked at that school doing what he did with no problem despite complaints for about 4 years after that day I never saw him again.

Something is just not right with that video. The 2 guys in the shop are standing looking at the door, one of them tells the younger one to take out the garbage and then the other guy steps back against the wall out of harms way. From the outside we see the lad dumping the garbage and go back inside where the 2 older guys are still watching the door then the cop comes in and takes him away. It's like they were expecting this to happen and they didn't even say anything to the cop or to each other, they just stand there looking at the door with hands in pockets. I'm not an expert but that does not look like normal behaviour to me.

I did realise that this guy had been arrested many times before, that seems very unusual to me too but my comment was about the video showing the unusual behaviour of the 2 guys in the shop. At the end of the CCTV clip, the guy with the bald head turns to someone behind the counter, opens his arms and raises his palms in a gesture which seems to mean "what did I tell you ?". It appears to me that this lad was set up and that seems very strange.

There is no way this could have happened to that same guy more than once without issues, You guys are insane to believe this nothing more than him taking out trash. The way the cop came after him, clearly he was waiting for him. "cough cough" drug dealer No I am not being racist, but there is something more than meet the eye. Arrested 60 times for just taking out the trash at work? I call complete bullshit, after the third time, that guy would "own" that city. How do you arrest someone for trespassing and no one has complained? Doesn't someone have to call and ask for the cops to arrest him for trespassing? This makes no sense. Where is the police chief?

What if He's a CI? They would pick him up as to not cause suspicion among his peers. It's a stretch. But I don't know whats going on there so it's worth mentioning that we're only seeing one side of the story. That said, If it is as it appears, well, he has a heck of a case. LOL

The real upside to this story. Most shopowners would have just gone: "Employee has troubles or causes troubles to me and my business. Imma fire him. Get someone else." But this shopowner desides to stand in for his ppl. Put up cameras to proof how they are being harassed by the police and go to court with it. Thats definitly not the easiest way to go for him but its the right way. If every employer would be like this shopowner the world would be a much much better place.

Tanner Stage V I'm sure they have a good reason; the people that run the system are themselves as corrupt as the police........they are willing to make excuses and justification for when the police violates black people's civil rights.....they probably wanted to leave no doubt whatsoever, when they take the matter to Court.

let me guess, the store owner had dark skin issues as well? Or he didn't want to sell his store to a local big shot for peanuts? Something is going on here and the judges are SO obviously in on it... unless its all catch and release before a court appearance... but still someone in city government must realise there is something sick going on there...

I've been telling people this for years, the police pick on people who are the least likely to be able to defend themselves. As the moderator said in this video, you don't see them doing this to Wall Street bankers. I've seen a couple of hundred videos of the police physically pulling someone out of their car and smashing their face to the ground, not one of them was wearing a $3,000 custom suit or driving $150,000 Mercedes

The woman between Ben & Cenk sort of has the same relationship to Cenk & Ana as Flavor Flav does to Chuck D, like a hype man but with a smaller part. She just sort of moves her shoulders around, agrees with everything ("yea" or "mmmhmm" or "right") or adds "so messed up" or whatever.

I'm guessing this is one of those places where they have commercial prisons so are required, by contract, to fill them up. So the cops break the law to fill the prisons.
