Does burning the log ends do anything or is it just for looks?

If you give the trunks of the logs a good burn before putting them into the ground, you seal the timber and prevent rotting. Burning the ends as he did would give just a little protection from moisture. I think the ones you saw him do would be more for looks. Burning the end to put in the ground need to be in a fire for like 10mins.. to char the out side of the trunk.
