Man Called Sun (Verve) - guitar jam cover *Hall of Fame II / Re-20 Space Echo

Recording of Man Called Sun - I used my daughter's 'castaway' pedalboard and the only effects used are the RE-20 space echo and Hall of Fame Reverb II run through the FX loop on a Rocker 15.
I've never liked the HoF II pedal, always found it a bit muddy but wanted to demonstrate you don't need an high end reverb pedal to get a good shoe gaze tone and was actually really surprised how nicely it sits in the loop.

Amazing as always the best Verve covers put there. Just one question are thinking about playing some UH covers. I think especially the live performances of those songs on bootlegs are phenomenal

cheers - I've got about 5-10 verve tracks in mind then I'll start doing some other bands. You're right, a lot of the live recordings sound better than the studio tracks

this is brilliant, making that guitar sing. For the storm in heaven sound is it generally tape style delay than digital? currently just using a zoom ms70 for delay, reverbs and modulation but looking to add another delay

Thanks mate - I think there is a lot less delay than you expect if you go through the guitars in ASIH, the tape echo doesn't suit the early stuff IMO, a lot of that sound seems to be in the reverb. The only thing to do is just buy loads and loads of pedals, amps and guitars to try out until your immediate family and friends stop talking to you 👊

Great vid thanks for sharing. I was looking at the RE-201 Space Echo before I bought the Quadraverb. How do you rate it and what does it offer that the Qverb doesn’t?

Whoops I accidently put RE 201 in the description it's the Boss RE20 pedal. Bit of a quirky unit that offers vintage tape delay and reverb tone. Had it over 10 years but I don't use it much anymore as I find it too noisy in the signal but the thing with this pedal is the spring reverb which isn't matched matched by other pedals so I'll never sell it as it sounds really nice with a way pedal. The tape swirls are a bit of a gimmick but nice to be able to do on the fly. I would look at cheaper pedals first the prices are going up on these and they don't give you much options for different types of delay 👍

Cheers. I’ve been looking at the range of pedals from Landlord FX recently as they get decent reviews, are cheap and have a couple of different delay pedals. First on the wanted list though is a Strat.

I've not tried one but I'm certain they would include by holding down the main pedal or the expression pedal with these are useful as you don't need to use your hands

Yeah that will be an upload for sure. I was playing about the licks on that last month - had the tone dialled in and everything but never got round to recording anything. Hoping to pick up a Kemper on my next visit home then I'll be all set

Cheers mate - yeah I've been thinking about that one after reading an interview I think he used two delays or there was some post recording trickery going on in the studio it's not a quick one to bash out but it's on the list

Would you be willing to offer paid Skype lessons? I've never been able to get the effects right for the early Verve and you seem to be spot on every time! I'm especially interested in learning Slide Away if you fancy doing a few sessions.

hi you can find me on Skype & if you catch me online I might have a spare 15 mins to have a listen or send me a recording; I'd struggle to do a lesson and certainly wouldn't charge for them, my guitar is pretty much limited to the pentatonic scale so there really isn't that much I could teach anyone haha I'm struggling for time & motivation to make vids at the moment but I'll add a Slide Away tutorial to the list because I think you can't see the fretboard on that vid with how the camera is set up. What's your signal chain? I would say the most important thing to shape your sound is the amp - usual problems are a hissy high gain, high treble tone or direct line recordings which sound flat and not very expansive

@@jptovee Great thanks, that would be really good! It’s mainly just how to set the effects that I’m interested in. For these sounds I’m just going Strymon Iridium > Strymon Volante Delay/Reverb. The tone is sounds really great, but I just can’t get the delay times & repeats right for how it sounds in that opening section and other ambient bits. The main riff I have more or less down. Nobody else on KZbin has got as close to those sounds, so I’d be really interested in how you set it up!
