Watch a few bear attack documentaries and you will understand why wise people carry firearms in bear country. While being killed by a bear is rare, being mauled by a bear is a very violent act. The survivors of such attacks are horrifically injured. Bear spray might be nice for a menacing bear, but an attacking bear is a completely different story. I'm sure Mr. Jackson was knocked to the ground before he could react which happens often in a bear attack. At that point if you're not pulling a firearm, you've become lunch. This is not meant to frighten people from enjoying the great outdoors, just be wise about it.

@@k9m42 nope 👎 hundreds of brown bears have been taken down by 10 mm and many Alaskans even carry the g20 up there. With some good ammo 10mm has no issue with a bear. And it has far more capacity, less recoil and easier to carry than a big bore revolver. They definitely work too but for the average person 10mm is better. Not to mention the bear in this case was a black. A hardcast 9mm could take those out.

Why not just carry some bear food around? Attacks seems to depend on the bear. They look alike but have different things they think or do. IDK why that bear attacked the man but he looked like he had the ideal off grid living trying to set up and build. Maybe people get too old saving the money to get out there?

Knew a young man who was attacked in the smokey mountains. He was 2 miles outside the park hunting for ginsing. Got snake bit by a Copper Head on the hand, it incompassitated him. He and his buddy had gotten separated. It got dark, and the bear was hungry. The buddy said after it had gotten dark he could hear his friend screaming. But didn't know where he was. They were unprepared, no flash lights nothing. The next day the friend went to alert the rangers. The news left out so much and implied the guy was dead when the bear scavenged on him. Not true at all. Me and both their moms are friends. They were late 20s. The buddy who heard his screams unalived himself one week later. It was his best friend. Said he couldn't get the screaming out of his head. That never made it to the news either

I wonder about habituation. If bears become used to obtaining food from humans, the bear comes to expect food. When that food doesn't materialize, that bear's going to get upset. I have no idea if that may have happened, or if this is an area near where habituation may have been happening. Or who knows, maybe the bear was just having a really bad day. Very sad.

Funny thing is actual animal behavior science is new and they do not know what they are talking about. I'd bet its not even 100 years since they actually started studying animal behavior. To top that off that the science started after large predators like bears or mountain lions were decimated in their populations. A bear or mountain lion came around you just shoot the thing. No studies from 500 years ago when the human population was scarce and 0 reporting about people being killed by large predators.

The fact that no one witnessed the bear actually attack the man how can they say it was unprovoked? Black bears are usually very docile and elusive animals and rarely come close to humans. The main reason bears are attracted to human areas is the smell of food....maybe this guy was feeding wildlife which brought the bear in. I have lived in black bear country for 30 years and bears pass through my yard often....but the one thing I try not do is leave any food out that may attract them closer. I have walked up on sows with cubs and other bears and always quietly and slowly eased back....never been charged or really threatened in any way. I will add...when I'm out in the mountains I always carry a sidearm....it's just common sense!

It must be that he did something dangerous, he must have done something wrong? While it's true this is very unusual it sounds like youre hinting it must have been his fault somehow. Certainly bad things only happen to bad people right? That's utterly untrue
@Calmontheoutside
@Calmontheoutside Жыл бұрын
@@hexane8 There is a difference between blame and simply stating facts. A person living in/visiting an area where, in this case, bears live, is in danger of being harmed or killed by a bear absent any other factors (“doing something stupid”). How often an attack happens is a bit meaningless when you’re dealing with wild animals. Five people could be killed by bears tomorrow and then none for 20 years. The only thing we still know with certainty is the closer you put yourself to their territory the higher your risk.

you can NOT store and dispose of food improperly in bear country...they have good sniffers, that goes for perfumed soaps and lotions etc...even if they have a good source for food, they will pick the humans food every time.
