To summarize for those confused by the lovely piano music in the background and/or this movie: This is a story about a woman who badly needs medical treatment after a horrible SA, but instead, her ex-boyfriend prevents her from seeing or speaking to anyone else, kidnaps and relocates her miles away from everything, and keeps her locked in a near-windowless room with the threat that she won’t be freed until she is sexually and emotionally intimate with HIM again. Oh, and in the meantime he tries to treat her serious injuries by googling them, absolutely making them worse in the process. He even physically harms her just to make sure she stays trapped. Bro is a psychopath. This is a *horror movie* not a love story. People really need to talk more about what consent is, my god.

Later, she'd be committed to a mental institute. Because of her condition, wouldn't she try to escape? Would the institute staff be guilty of kidnapping by forcing her to stay? They'd use drugs and padded rooms to ensure her obedience if she made truly concerted attempts to escape, but that's ok, right? In the end, I'd consider the boyfriend a better option. He educated himself on her condition, and because of his connection to her previous life he was possibly in a better position to recover her mind. Plus the fact that he actually loves her (and supposedly she loved him up until the rape), which is certainly better than the polite detachment she'd receive from psychiatrics professionals and caregivers. The ideal solution was to work in tandem with professionals, but the boyfriend's hand was forced.

It is possible that he "planted" those memories of himself, or rather he gained har trust and enacted those scenes in the previous cycle in a hope to eventually create enough of them to convince her that they were actually dating. I guess it's not that hard to decorate a room to look like a restaurant, or a party. I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know if any of their moments together included other people, whose presense would be much harder to organize. But I'm just sick of the stalker theme in movies. So I'm inclined to believe that Thomas was actually her boyfriend. And it's still possible that he was her assaulter as well: after all it's not unheard of that a boyfriend would assault his girlfriend. Perhaps her raped her, and then tried to "fix" everything by making her forget everything and fall in love with him anew.

@@Tay-vr3be actually, I have another theory about the pills. It is implied that what we saw is not the first iteration of the cycle. Like, how she finds the burnt matches behind a brick, or the messages she leaves herself in the album -- all of those are artefacts of the previous cycles. This means that between the alleged rape and the present moment a long time has passed. It'd already be too late to take contraceptives. My theory is that the previous cycle ended just like this one: she had sex with him, and then ran away. I don't know if I believe Thomas or not: he may be a total scumbag, or... well, not a total one. Maybe what he says is true, and she does have an amnesia. In that case sex might actually be a trigger that resets her memories. But that's a whole different theory.

Apparently, the filmmakers clued that the movie is actually not presented in chronological order. Knowing the fact that most scenes are jumbled around makes us question the movie even more. I noticed that the ending is definitely not the actual ending. It has to have occurred earlier on in the movie. Like when she pushed the boat, she collapses and we're taken underwater where we are all of a sudden set back to a scene where tom is acting out one of his scenarios as a doctor to begin his plan on regaining her memory. You'll notice this scene from the mid part of the movie. fr tho i loved the movie and its def worth the watch

Absolutely! And another thing, the scene where she's shown getting recurring dreams of her drowning amid the grey waters and something dragging her up by the arms 3:26, actually kinda resonates with the part where she passed out beside the little water body, 14:16. Pretty sure that this scene cuts immediately to day [the next day on her waking up] she dreamt of her drowning or something.

And people think that's good intent. I would just have written it off as a silly movie plot, but as you've pointed out an unsettling number of people think this is alright, or even romantic. He could have taken her to the hospital, reported the assault, and people saying "oh they would have assumed he assaulted her" Why, Rob is a witness to the timeline and an alibi, the hospital would have run a rape kit and Nick's DNA would have been all over her, all dude needed to do was literally drive his traumatized girlfriend to the hospital, and visit her as she recovered. The victim feels so reliant on their captor. That they believe they can't survive without them. Which is clearly not the case here. Also, the protagonist isn't falling in love with the man because of their day to day interactions. She's doing so with every memory she gets back. Recalling her very genuine feelings for him from their past normal relationship. Ntm she spends most of the film, and all of her flashbacks trying to escape from him. You were right. About 2 months ago I was kidnapped by a guy who liked me but I didn’t like him back. He’d pretend to be my boyfriend and get me food like this guy did to her. He wanted me to like him back. When I didn’t want to hold his hand or kiss him he’d hit me or raise his fist. It was just for two days though and throughout the months he’d stalk my house knew where I lived and worked. As I’m reading the comments. His body was stronger than mine, no matter how much I fought him on it he’d just laugh. But everyone saw him as this nice guy who just liked me. They even asked me why I didn’t just give him a chance. The only way I felt I could survive was to pretend like I liked him back. I was in a city without any family. My ex boyfriend was overseas in the military but we wanted to try again when he got back. That’s the opportunity her took.. the fact I was alone. And the opportunity I took, was the that even though his body was stronger than mine which could easily overpower me and I couldn’t fight him back. I had to use my mind to survive it all. I had to pretend to like him, because then I wasn’t going to get as hurt as I was whenever I repeatedly told him I didn’t like him back, that I was waiting for someone and that I didn’t want a relationship with him. My ex and I got together and made the report. Days later the guy and his friends started driving by our house, and shooting guns outside of it. I’m not scared. Not anymore. So when you wrote this two months ago. You wrote it when it actually did happen to someone.

hmm, technically we can't guarantee that he's truly her boyfriend. And those memories she gets could be memories from when she was being kidnapped that she then forgot. If he really is her boyfriend and he's really trying to get her memories back, the way he's doing shows that he's doing his best to really milk that one brain cell he has left. Also, he isn't really her boyfriend as I mentioned earlier, then why does he persist to use the kidnap scenario, if he can already corrupt her memories like that 0.0. This movie makes no sense LMAO.

I just skimmed through the comment section, and it's like 90% of ppl didn't finish the video. The guy is trying to cure amnesia that resets periodicaly, but that is revealed only at the end. The girl might have a good reason to not believe him, but we as audience get to know the truth. On second rewatch the so called "dramatic irony" kicks in and makes the film even better.
@bleedinghearts4768

What?? He kidnapped her and gaslight her. Hell, with all the lies and scenarios he’s told hes probably the one who assaulted her and killed her actual boyfriend. Why else would he be giving her contraceptive pills in this scenario? You believe his little story? Would you like someone to do this to you then? Since you find it so romantic. Get therapy. You clearly need it.
@teinmeizeshi5209
@teinmeizeshi5209 2 жыл бұрын
@@bleedinghearts4768 You're not well versed in film language are you? There are minor details like how he gets angry when she accuses him of assault. He gets angry not at her but at the guy who actually did it, also the film directors clearly let us the audience know that he is in fact the hero of the story, with the final scene where he is preparing a new plan. We as audience get to know way more information than the characters themselves. It is literally confirmed by the film director with small details like those.
@bleedinghearts4768
@bleedinghearts4768 2 жыл бұрын
@@teinmeizeshi5209 Ah yes, the sociopath getting mad is a clear indicator he’s innocent. Have you never seen a person who is clearly wrong get angry? They do in court all the time. They get angry because they know they are wrong and hate to be accused/reminded. And his plan? His plan to what? Continue to kidnap her but with a new twisted story? If this man wanted to help he’d take her to a hospital after her supposed rape despite any negative consequences he may face for murder. He doesn’t care about her at all. He’s doing what he’s doing out of his OWN self interest. He murdered someone and doesn’t want to go through the legal system for it. He said it was her rapist but i doubt it, he’s a liar. We’ve seen him lie about almost everything in the movie, so why not lie about who the real rapist is? He wants her to himself. He wants her to love him. Telling her he raped her is out of the question. And once again. He is giving her contraceptive pills. For what? If he isn’t assaulting her while she is unconscious, what’s the need for them? Edit: This is a horror film. This man is not the “hero”. He is the antagonist.

@@bleedinghearts4768 I recommend you to learn what "dramatic irony" is. I guess I just have different understanding of the film then you. Since you are just assuming of what happened in the story, I go by observation of the structure of the story. I not gonna argue with you anymore since "The logic is in the head of the thinker." You just have the 14 year old girl logic in your head and assume things, while ignoring the story the film is actually trying to tell.
@bleedinghearts4768

@@teinmeizeshi5209 Ah yes, the facts presented to you with the contraception pills she is urged to take (why if she is not sexually active?) along with the fact we are aware he is a liar; a good one at that. We’ll simply ignore those facts and all probable suspicions because it’s “14 year old girl logic”. I cannot find one good reason to side with any person that detains an innocent against their will. She’s imprisoned. And for what? Because he wants her to love him? That is not at all logical. You stated that we as the audience know the “truth”. But what truth do we know? The one he told? How are you certain it’s the truth? Because the kidnapper said it? You’re blindly following what was said without critical thinking. You’re right, the details are in the movie. Such as contraception pills. Locking her away in the middle of no where. Manipulating her under the stipulations she’ll have to remain there unless she falls in love with him. Oh, and of course the murder of her supposed rapist. How are you so sure that isn’t just another one of his stories?

Question- what's with the 'don't trust him' bit? Was it warranted and the whole story he told her fake? Or was it just from when she couldn't remember what was going on? If it was the latter, why would she need to tell her future self not to trust him- it doesn't seem like she'd need to be reminded not to trust her kidnapper that injured her legs and left her on a cold floor with drugs, shitty food, and nothing else. I felt like this movie was quite a waste of time. It wouldn't be so bad if he had at least made her more comfortable, that part just makes no sense. Also there needs to be more of a reason that he'd not go to get help, like maybe someone of authority is after them or something. But they're just a regular white well to do couple...

For people doubting the logic behind the "falling in love with your kidnapper", that's because it's not something that comes from logic. Stockholm Syndrome is a survival response to a stress environment where your physical well-being is not endangered but *could be* at any time. The stress it puts your body through can trigger a response to lower your stress and make you use seduction to lower your risk of wounds and/or death. The survival kick triggers on the psychological level, using the primal instinct of "seek shelter with the strong one." Which is also why the Stockholm Syndrome can trigger even amongst groups, maybe even more efficiently. (The Stockholm case in 1973 involved four hostages)

Yup, but beyond just the immediate survival instinct, it can persist even after the kidnapper allows his victim freedom years later. There are stories of men kidnapping women and then later, those same kidnapped women helping the predator to abduct other women, helping the same man who captured them to begin with. It's wild how the mind works. It does make some sense though.

While it’s a part of popular culture and frequently referenced in media, there’s no scientific basis for it. In fact, it’s not included in the DSM and there is 0 conclusive research supporting it. The research that does exist is inconclusive. At best, it’s an extremely rare occurrence. The controversy around the 1973 bank robbery is super interesting. I recommend looking into it. The captives claimed that the Stockholm police coined the term “Stockholm Syndrome” to discredit their criticism. They publicly criticized the police ‘s handling of the situation, because the police made several moves that could have threatened their lives. To save face, the Swedish police enlisted a criminologist to call the captives brainwashed, and thus Stockholm syndrome was born.

@@zs8526 no, I think it is real in many real life events put on the news. Maybe NOT 99% consistent in a scientific way but my guess is "often"/"most of the cases" kind of chance.

How was it a good deed tho? We don't really know if a men r@ped or if he put that memory in her brain and f he really just tried to save her why would he take her to a isolated island and lock her in a room and keep her hostage instead of.. idk take her to an hospital like a normal person?!!!

@@AnthonyVanGansen that would still make it extremely selfish and wrong to kidnap her and keep her hostage. And the part of her being raped can be false we have no way of knowing if it's real or he put that memory in her head to justify him keeping her hostage. And it's not necessarily true that he would go to jail for murder he could with a good lawyer get a light punishment as it was in defence.
