My dad hide in a swamp with his friends when he was trying to escape the Re-education camps in Vietnam. That’s how he taught himself how to swim. Got caught 4 times and every time he was punished with hard labor. While my mom did escape successfully by hiding in fishing boats. They met while they went back to school. My mom’s family wanted her to marry some guys that could bring her to the US but she chose my dad instead and they stayed in Vietnam saving up enough money to come to the US, that took them 20 years.

I just went to look up the article. It's the daily mail and their top rated comments are usually full of awful, angry people with no grain of empathy in them, but I was hoping that this time, considering all this man had to go through in his life, they would be sympathic/empathic. Boy, was I wrong. What a cesspool I'm glad this comments section is different. :D

@@sarahi1149 I know right! He'd researched it beforehand. He knew how low his chances were and yet he did it. That's how desperate he was. Those comments under the article are 99% people complaining that he wasn't sent back and that British tax payers had to pay for his recovery, and since he can't work now, his life. In the grand scheme of things, it's nothing though imo. It's 100x better than sending him back to homelessness, despair and gang violence, with a handicap now.

My dad was a refugee from the Vietnam War. He was still a kid when he escaped, and I remember him telling me that him and a few other relatives was running through the woods at nighttime so no one would spot them. Unfortunately, they did get caught. The Thai police told everyone to empty their pockets and my dad told me he had some coins in his possession and he didn't want to give them up. The police was going one by one and once they got to my dad, they skipped him. So he got to keep what little money he had. Then they all got taken to a refugee camp in Thailand and eventually got the chance to come to the US.

@Jasleen In terms of navigating asylum seeker support I would agree. Good accommodation quality and cash allowances are much easier to come by. I've also personally come across DRC refugees in South Africa and they too were given accommodation, allowance and free training on adjusting to culture and language but perhaps in the UK there's a higher probability of getting such asylum benefits 🤷♂️. I think in the end every asylum seeker has their own valid individual reasons to leave and for them the grass is greener on the either side. For some its the UK and for others its the very country (SA) that he left
