Missing a revenue target by that much only happens if the target was wildly inaccurate in the first place. That with the fact they just refused to listen to feedback shows how truly out of touch and unfit to lead the management team is

As disgusting as the layoffs were treated, its even worse how badly they were handed out. You dont give the 2 best music composers on your team the boot unless you’re giving up after final shape. There’s zero silver lining here

yeah im not sure if they threw them out because they thought they cost too much money and that they dont really need them anymore (bc bungie could probably live by just remixing existing songs by now) or if they really lay them off after "felt importance" but that they had to layoff so many people, that they even had to layoff those that had rank and names ( especially in the community) and im not sure which option would be the worse one

Same. The last time I played Destiny seriously was quitting the last week before Beyond Light dropped. Told my clan lead, "Hey, I'm basically gone. Might reinstall 1 or 2 times a year, but otherwise, I'm out. Can't afford it and don't want to be beaten around the bush anymore. Bye." The last time I played at all was the Pirates season, where it was revealed that the Thingamajigs y'all were collecting were Nezarec's parts. Then the time Witch Queen was made free to play for a while, and when that little period ended, I decided to finally unlock Stasis, the hyped up subclass everyone finally got with Beyond Light and I had missed out on. I had lost the love and fun I felt playing this game, I couldn't even finish the 2nd mission AFTER saving Variks. Just couldn't. It felt more like a chore to get through the area than to play something like FF14 for its story or Ghost of Tsushima for its mechanics and visceral combat system. Back then, I realized the game, despite the lore and how willing they were to delve into it and the creators showing the secrets we never knew existed within, was gonna flop sometime. Just sad to see it do so like this after so long.

After being a long-term content creator for Destiny, I can imagine that the prospect of reworking your channel is pretty rough. But your Destiny content demonstrates the tremendous polish and skill you bring to KZbin production, and that will carry over into everything else you do in the future. Your cerebral, analytic approach to gameplay and “elitist,” skill-oriented tryhardery will flourish in other games too. Tbh I am completely fine with a delay for the final shape if that's what it takes to make the game better. What stings the most for me though is that this was avoidable. This is a massive sign that the upper management at bungie desperately needs looking at and to have some form of accountability. These people in upper management saw projections were low, devs repeatedly asked to fix the game to win players back and get projections back up, upper management refuses all feedback and then decides to lay off people who really were trying to fix the problem in the first place. Imagine getting fired for trying to do your job.

As someone who deals with business management, this is a tough situation for the company, employees, and the customers. But an interesting thing around this situation is a meme that Destiny became because of the lack of content in the early days, “it’s about the friends we made along the way”. Morale is going to be astonishing low for employees that survived the layoffs and the customers that have stuck with the brand/game. Customers are going to stick with those laid off and Bungie becomes the bad guys (which they are, leadership could have made corrections before all this even with inflated projections). The community isn’t going to preorder The Final Shape, content creators are going to turn on Bungie (already happening), and players are going to spend time/money elsewhere. Making corrections now will take a lot to get veterans back, then content creators, then core players, with having to reach general audiences being the biggest challenge for Destiny in recent years. Marathon is going to come out fighting an uphill battle.

I think a lot of this also lies on the economy right now. Or at least, where people think it'll be by next year. Bungie's made a lot of bad decisions that they should have corrected sooner, and there's a lot of criticism they've gotten over the past four years or so, some deserved, some not, but it's also just harder and harder for a lot of people to justify buying games in general these days, especially with a recession on the horizon. I'm committed and I'm struggling to myself. Not to mention factors outside anyone's control that severely impacted player numbers recently, making a bad situation look worse than it was. Like the DDOS attacks that scared people away for most of last month. Back to the layoffs, if this were just Bungie, I'd believe that this is mostly their fault, but Bungie weren't the only major company in the industry to start doing this this month, and there are some good reasons for that. I don't think it's greed as much as desperation right now. This is just thunder.

Bungie has a board of directors, they are at the very top. Additionally ever since Parsons took over as COE from the previous President (before D1 came out) there has been a notable shift in Bungie's internal philosophy. It started prior to D1 launching with the firing of Joseph Staten and continued with the firing of Marty O'Donnell (both of whom were considered founding members of Bungie) It has never gone back to how it was before that time period, it has only, slowly, gotten worse over time.

This whole event is very similar to what happened to 343 at the beginning of the year. 343 employees got laid off, but the upper management was a huge issues and was mainly responsible for how Infinite launched. Once those layoffs happened, there was also a giant restructuring of the company that saw many of those problematic leaders resign or move to other companies. Since that happened, Infinite has been consistently getting better every single season. It still needs work, but they have actively listened to feedback and are slowly giving players what they've been asking for since launch. They're even reworking the entire netcode of the game to help prevent desync which has plagued many players during matches. Desync was there in the first place because of the higher ups rushing the game out at launch in a broken state. Bungie is going to suffer a lot more if the higher ups aren't switched or moved in some capacity. They are out of touch and the game, and community is now going to suffer more before something seriously needs to be done.

You and the other creators are part of the problem -- continuously giving the game attention when it doesn't deserve it. One small trailer for the next expansion and your tune completely changes... every. single. time. You and the others have become complete paper cut outs; so 1 dimensional that it's effortless to predict your next piece of content or commentary. I challenge you to put this game down till June and try something else. Relieve yourself of these shackles and detox yourself from the indoctrination you've self inflicted. By continuing to make regular content on this hot mess you are only showing them the product is adequate and playable.

@@TDTProductions No, I'm not telling you to quit.. I'm challenging you to expand past Destiny. How far has the negative feedback gotten us? Not very far at all if player count is at some of the lowest its ever been. I ALSO want the game to be good! I've been here since D1 beta and have given feedback continuously through surveys, leaving comments, etc but enough is enough man -- its mostly just false promises on their part. I firmly believe ppl gravitate towards YT personalities more than they do the d2 content itself (which is just copied by everyone else). The whole diffusion of accountability with the infamous “upper management” is very much by design. They almost never put a name or a face on the decisions that tank a company so that they can dodge accountability and eventually quietly shuffle out to fail upwards to a higher paying job somewhere else. It’s truly an epidemic in almost every industry right now.

I dont know if this helps, but I feel like I'm not alone in expressing that for folks like you, Travel Danielle, and Jez, I'm following y'all for your personalities and what y'all bring to a game you three enjoy (truly or begrudgingly) rather than what a game brings to y'all. I can't speak to numbers (which is what is needed at the end of the day), but the content I stick around with on KZbin now and watch from beginning to end (and even revisit on bad days) are videos where friends have fun playing games they like. I hope if TFS and Destiny 2 flops that you (and others) can find a game you can pour the analytical part of your brains into. I tried tons of builds, even if not my playstyle, thanks to your videos. But hopefully until that new game comes around, things like golf game with friends or things you enjoy are going to keep having me come back. Same with Myelin and others I follow. As for TFS, completely agree with your sentiment. If folks want to finish the saga or even beyond that, totally understand. If folks drop it forever, absolutely can understand that.

It sounds like they took a number of people from each department in order to spread out and minimize the damage to productivity. From a business standpoint, losing 100 out of 1200 people spread across 15-20 departments isn't catastrophic. I'm not trying to sound cynical or anything, just being realistic. My heart does go out to the staff that were fired. Here's hoping that Bungie brand cache is still worth something so they can bounce back quickly.

I personally feel that my expectations were appropriately set to enjoy the Final shape but now I'm not sure. The Arm chair business man in me thinks that layoffs just weren't an option in the past because they weren't owned by a missive company and would have had to directly make the game better to survive. A younger me would have gone the "cancel your preorder, boycott the game" rout but after 9 long years come hell or high water my $100 is locked in, the investment fallacy is way way to sunk in at this point. Looking through my crystal ball I expect final shape to be a disappointment in some ways and I'm waiting just for the IHE video to inevitably come out with an "I told you so".

I mentioned this in one of Byf's videos already, and I'll state it again: I don't understand how Bungie thinks they can squeeze in another season before Final Shape. My plan for destiny has always been drastic. They should make each enemy faction playable in certain areas and missions in the game. Imagine playing as a fallen enemy crawling on walls and slinging dual wield swords and shrapnel cannons. Imagine playing as a Cabal Colossus jetting around and shooting pulsing canon shots at the hive while taking back Torobatl.. I truly believe the future of destiny should be about taking advantage of the universe they've created in every way, including a war mode PvP including each enemy faction. I've been watching your content since D1, but there's definitely periods of time when I drop D2 for a few months, or even up to a year, and I also don't watch any D2 content during that time. I fell off of this season after the third week or so (I actually was really enjoying the season, but fatigue just hit me and I had to play other things) so I haven't been watching any Destiny videos for the past few months, so naturally my personal algo kinda subdues the destiny content creators. Your suika game vid managed to pop up though and I wanted to see what the game was, and it was genuinely a really funny/entertaining video (and got me to also download it lol), and I was excited to see that you posted a second one. You've got great humor and its great to see that come out during other games, because like you mentioned in a stream the other day, when you play destiny you're more like an encyclopedia, or its like professor Datto. You're great for information but sometimes I like the Datto that drops a "You can't scissor your buttholes together, it's just ergonomically not possible." Bro I laughed out loud to that. But it made me realize that I actually miss watching you for content, not just D2. So I've gone back to start watching your Elden Ring vods, maybe your MHW vods again (would love to see you play through MH Rise), your Suika vod, etc. I'm really looking forward to your variety content, especially with smaller indie games (if you've never played Baba is You before, I think you would enjoy getting some brain wrinkles from that one). Inscryption is one of the best games I've played the past few years. Outer Wilds is one of the best games I've played of all time, and really changed how I view games. We Were Here is a fun/funny short asymmetric puzzle game that resembles reading brand new raid symbol callouts. Portal games if you havent played them There's so many games that I would honestly pay to watch you play, and I'm sure there's plenty of other people that feel the same way. You're more than just a D2 FAQ, and nows a good of a time as any to really explore that 🤍

As someone who started with the franchise with the D2 Pc port, Destiny was a game I thoroughly enjoyed. It had an amazing feel and immersion into a world with a story that made you want to know more with how little they gave you. Bread crumb style. It even had the feel of waiting for your favorite show to come on next week with an expansion release to get more story. However, that died. Once a year we got a major content release via an expansion, but it ended up being content you could consume in a month or two as a casual. Then there's seasons. This is my major issue. Seasons killed the game. They're dull, repetitive, droning content that involved the same mechanics spun a different way seemingly never meshing with the overarching story of the expansion. My final point is the bringing back of old content then again HAD NOTHING to do with the current story line. It was an obvious "battle passes work for other games" mentality then ruined all immersion, and we were left with the mechanical aspects of the game being the only thing involved. My blame? Upper management not ever paying attention to the nonsense they were pushing, but also the player base. The old D1 players constantly nagging for old content that new players felt no attachment to. It didn't attach into the current story, and the game started to feel like it was on repeat every season. It just looked different. I loved D2, but it killed itself.

Maybe Destiny 2 should focus on trying to get new players into the game. Maybe start by simplifying the purchasing process. Or by having stuff from previous expansions automatically available instead of being time gated for weeks and months like Stasis. Or having a proper looking for group system so new players can enjoy the endgame without having to know someone. Or just cleaning up all the left over systems and mechanics from previous expansions that make is incredibly confusing to play through. Or have a proper new light path where the player needs to go through the expansions in order, unlocking everything in previous expansions quickly without the need to grind.

The thing about this kind of game is its really hard to get players back once they leave. You have to get their whole fireteam back, or you don't get any of them, at least not for long.

Bungie’s situation reminds me a lot of Disney’s situation in the movies and tv industry: corporate execs overworking employees for quantity over quality in pursuit of short term greed, and then once customers stop paying for repetitive, never ending content then employees start getting fired and execs freak out that their grift stopped working. Both companies now also have the problem that they can’t course correct soon enough to change their upcoming slate of content because they’ve been in development for years at this point. The Marvels is expected to be a big loss for Disney with very poor pre-sales, and Final Shape is underperforming in preorder numbers.

Board of directors is likely the genesis of the issue, maybe even shareholders as well.

Datto, a bunch of us as your viewers are definitely interested in the variety stuff, I think you're a cool and funny guy, I enjoy your content, and personally I plan on sticking around. If that means anything from a random commenter lol. I've been a fan for a while, and I look forward to whatever you're gonna be trying.

I play once a week. I do th e weekly stuff and missions for the season then move on to other games. Season missions end to quickly leaving you with a basic routine.

If the good ideas they stopped were QoL or systems we use forever in the game as opposed to seasonal content, I don't see the reason they couldn't deliver. I'd still love to watch a full video on the GDC thing.

I know there's more important topics in this video but the barrier to entry for new players is insane! About 6 months ago my daughter was interested in starting but I had such a hard time figuring out what she actually needed to be able to really play the game (and I've played since House of Wolves). In then end, we gave up because it looked like it was going to cost us something like $200 but even then we weren't sure. That's around the time I stopped playing as well. We have since enjoyed multiple great games like Tears of the Kingdom instead.

Have you all looked into Warframe? It's nothing like Destiny, but it can reasonably be played fully for free if you're both willing to do a little item trading. The main draw is collecting all the robot guys/gals and weapons, and they can all be farmed for free through various activities. Again, it's nowhere near Destiny on multiple fronts, but it might be an acceptable substitute if your daughter wants a looter shooter that's fun and laid back. Just be forewarned that you do need to spend premium currency to buy slots to hold all your robots and weapons and little companion dudes. A few free ones are given out a handful of times a year but not at a speed that'll be helpful. Again, if you do some trading one day a week you should be able to bag enough to expand your arsenal with little friction. Or you could just drop the 5 or ten bucks a month in your early playtime if you don't want to wait. I tried Destiny 2 when it supposedly went "free to play" and I was annoyed it was actually "free to try". The cost to get the story and, well, everything was mind-blowing. I bounced pretty hard once I figured that out. At least Warframe gives all the story content for free and almost everything is kept in game; some very minor events have been one and done but they're absolutely not needed for you to understand what the main plot points are. Destiny 2 was just...baffling in more ways than one.

@@ChristopherSadlowski Tried it a while back and had trouble getting into it. Not a problem with the game itself, more that I didn't have friends playing it (like I did Destiny still) and that it just wasn't Destiny. I probably would have enjoyed it if I was playing it with others though. As my friends started to move on last year, I decided to take a break and have been enjoying a backlog of great games I hadn't got around to playing because as a father and homeowner I barely had enough time to keep up with Destiny alone, much less play other games. Meanwhile, I've really enjoyed games like Ghost of Tsushima, Tears of the Kingdom, Cyberpunk 2077, and now Baldur's Gate 3. This is the first time I haven't pre-ordered but if my friends come back for The Final Shape, I probably will as well just for some closure and nostalgia for a journey we all started back in D1. Thanks for the suggestion on Warframe though, I might have to give it another shot at some point.
