What many folks don’t understand about West Virginia is there are still a lot of families living in poverty from lack of jobs and technology accessible to them. My dad didn’t have internet access until 2 years ago. My neighbor growing up had dirt floors, no plumbing or electric and was barefoot whether he was on his Harley or walking to the small store at the end of the road. With all of that being said you couldn’t have found a nicer person if you tried. Whenever my grandma got sick in 2007 that same neighbor walked to her house daily and gave her corn, beans, tomato’s etc he had picked earlier in the day most often it went unused but it was all he had and he wanted to be supportive. Just simple folks wanting a simple life not every backwoods family in WV are inbred or trashy. I could take you to some of the most beautiful homes with wonderful people living in them at the end of an old dirt/gravel road.

I was an Oil and Gas Leasing Agent/Landman/Right-of-Way Agent/Title Agent for years. My first project was in Harlan Kentucky, but it spread out pretty far through Appalachia. The first landowner I had to negotiate a Right-of-Way easement agreement with lived right over the border into Virginia. I was alone, and how I found this holler is beyond me, but I drove down this deep, dark, scary holler and ended up at the creepiest house I've ever seen. There were stray dogs everywhere, just running around. I could actually smell B.O. before I pulled up to the house. It was unbearable and made my eyes water. Out of the house came 2 men. Both filthy, both shirtless, and both fully deaf. One was at least 6'7 and very thin. The other was much shorter and hefty. Both used sign language, but it wasn't what we know as sign language, they used their own. They could make noises but could not hear or speak words. They were brothers. The tall one looked to be around 35ish, and the other one looked to be around 40ish, but who knows. They smelled so badly that I had to focus on anything else I could think of. I did not want to be rude or hurt anyone by gagging or vomiting. They led me into the house because their father was the landowner. Actually, their mother was, but she had passed away about 5 years beforehand. The house smelled worse than outside, and there were a bunch more dogs running around inside. Their dad was probably 60 at the time (this was 15 years ago), but he looked 80. His fingernails were extremely long and brown. He was bedridden but stayed on the couch. He smelled of armpit and urine. I had to pull out my plat maps, open them up, and spread them out on top of him. He was not deaf, btw, he spoke fine. He sat up and asked me to sit by him so I could show him the interested route on the maps. I was about to sit when I noticed these bugs crawling around, and I think they were bed bugs, so I told him I had been driving all day and needed to stand for a while. He agreed to the easement, but only if I came back the next day to walk the route with the taller son and flag it in his son's presence so we don't stray off the route we agreed on. He communicated this to his son in their very interesting way. The whole time, both sons are standing right behind me. Made me very nervous. On my way back to my car, the taller son walked with me. He grabbed my hand and lightly squeezed my ring finger while making this noise that clearly sounded like a question, and I instantly knew what he meant. I shook my head yes, but because I did not have my wedding ring on, I could tell he did not believe me. I had recently lost quite a bit of weight. I had gone swimming literally the day before at this beach around Harlan called Martin's Fork Lake. A hidden gem. My ring slipped off in the lake, but I didn't realize it until I had left. I had no way to communicate this to him. I thought to myself, 'These people are going to keep me here tomorrow and force me to be his wife and take care of them all!" Lol. My husband and I were both working on this project, but we were assigned different routes to work on. He couldn't go with me the next day because he had his own landowners to see and his own deadlines to meet. He called this guy we worked with, Neil, who actually lived in Harlan his whole life. My husband and I transferred there for the project, but our homestead was in Indiana. He asked Neil if he could accompany me and walk/flag the route with me and this very tall, scary man. Neil was happy to help. When we arrived there the following day, the tall, scary man was waiting at the start of the holler, which was about 3/4 a mile from the house. He knew where we were starting from, which was behind the house. When he saw Neil in the front seat, he did not hide his anger. He got in my back seat and reached between the 2 front seats around my chest and grabbed my hand again. He squeezed my ring finger again, but much harder this time, while pointing at Neil with his other hand with this look of anger. He started making this very loud noise while nashing his teeth, and I instantly knew he was asking if Neil was my husband. Since Neil was around 6'4 and in good shape, I shook my head yes. This guy was taller than Neil, but I thought he could at least be intimidated by him. He was visibly angry that I did not come alone. We walked and flagged the route, then went inside the house so his dad could sign the agreement. I couldn't get away from there fast enough. My husband and I both were grateful to Neil Brock for sure. I know this is a long story to put in a comment section, but I haven't thought about this in years. It was, if anything, an adventure, one of many I've lived, and I wanted to share and slightly relive it. I'm not a paranoid person, but from the way this guy reacted due to my not coming back alone, makes me wonder what he had in store for me on that day. A gentleman down the highway from their holler told me that the 2 deaf brothers were products of inbreeding. Their father and his sister are the parents. The man who signed the Right-of-Way easement agreement reproduced with his sister who gave birth at least twice to 2 deaf boys. I don't know if this is true, but the man who told me this had lived there his entire life and he knew everything about everyone in this area. He seemed normal and legit. Fascinating and frightening.

I can't understand why they would lie to him and rip him off when all they had to do was just ask Mark, he would have helped them. I wonder after that happened if Mark still sees and helps them. If not who could blame him, after you break a person's trust it's pretty much over. Dang sorry Mark❤

@thatguyjohn1131 I don't think you're really wrong about them thinking he's Santa Claus. The last time I saw an update on this family, the matriarch of the family will continually call him to get money that he was trying to save up through donations so they could have a new house. The money had ran out. I don't know if there are any updates since then, but that was about a year ago I read that.
