Something like 65% of those were bear self-defense, too. There are about 11.7 non-fatal black bear contacts each year in North America, and 11.4 of brown or grizzly bears. …and half the encounters in either group are caused by irresponsible humans. Rare but the best! I'd trust very few men to be alone in a place with. It's like some people are just waiting to be alone with you (when they think you're defenseless) to do the most horrifying things. Like, there was one time (It's actually not too bad / I push away that memory not to think much about it) when me, a boy and his little sister were in a room adjacent to our classroom during a teacher/parents reunion. We had to wait to be taken home while they talk and would spy on them by peaking through a key hole of the door to the classroom. I was letting his little sister see inside the room while I turned around and say the boy pull down his pants and underwear. I remember just blocking the view of his little sister and turning around, trying to forget. I was young and so was he, so I couldn't really understand and neither could he I think. It may not have been anything malicious on his part. But do some people, some older men, just wait to get the opportunities to do "forbidden" things that may hurt people..? Even people that look kind and non-threatening. You really can't trust anyone once you're on your own with them. Except a few people.

As a father, when one of my daughters came up to me and showed me the “bear v. Man” fight, I was a bit surprised by the men’s behavior. My daughter told me she would choose the bear (no offense to me of course). And I’m glad she did, because in that HYPOTHETICAL situation, I wouldn’t want my daughter to be stuck in the woods with some random guy who might do unspeakable things to her. I want my kids to stand proud and tall, but they are still kids and aren’t strong enough to fight both a bear or a man. I love my girls, and imagining some man to do “that” to them, and only get some measly couple years in prison, tears my soul apart. Hope all you girls stay safe ❤

My choosing the bear story: When I was 19, my family and I were staying in a cabin on a lake in the woods. There was a large window in the room I was sleeping in, almost to the floor, and I had it open while I slept as it was really hot. I was awoken in the middle of the night by sounds directly outside of the window. There was rustling, snapping and snuffling sounds. I assumed it was a raccoon or fox and went back to sleep. The next morning, I went around the back of the house as the window in my room backed onto the forest. I wanted to search for prints to see what kind of animal had visited in the night. Instead of raccoon or fox, I saw the claw prints of a big bear, right outside the window. That was exciting and a bit nerve-wracking, knowing he'd been about two feet from my head. But that night I slept in the same room, on my own, with the window open. Now, if I had gone around the back of the cabin and seen large, man's bootprints? I sure as hell wouldn't have left the window open and probably would have bunked in with my parents or sister. There is no way I would have felt safe in a room alone, knowing that a strange man had been standing outside my window at night in the middle of the woods. So, yes, I'm choosing the bear. Changing that scenario in my head to be a man instead of a bear really solidified that for me. Also, having grown up in Canada fishing and camping, I had run across bears before with no problems at all. They tend to just mind their own business. Bear attacks and deaths happen, of course, but they're rare enough that you can be pretty sure you'll be fine if you happen upon one in the woods. I would feel much less secure about running across a man I don't know.

Early humans appeared 2 million years ago. Civilisation has only been around for 5000 years. Humans made it this far partly because many men are hard-wired to be this way toward women. However that evolutionary useful behaviour is out of place in a civilised society. As a species we no longer need women to be forcibly impregnated. If judges had any balls such men would be medicated until they behaved in an acceptable manner.

Actually the aggressiveness of a bear depends on the species. Pandas and spectacled bears have far more reason to be afraid of you. Black Bears are timid and won't attack unless given no other choice. Brown bears will vary by species, smaller ones will mostly try to scare you off but larger ones will attack humans on sight. Polar bears will not only attack unprovoked, but are also one of the few species which will actually treat humans as prey, which when combined with their ability to outrun humans with ease means that you're FUCKED the moment a polar bear sees you.

I wonder how many of the guys getting genuinely upset about this question would choose bear if the question was instead: “would you rather be alone in the woods with a bear (genus Ursus) or a man”, where the man in question is also a Bear (gay slang for masculine gay men who are fat and/or hairy). I’m curious because I get the vibe that some of these guys are the kind of straight men who get _very_ uncomfortable in the presence of anything gay (as in gay men, lesbians are another issue all together), yet they appear to be willfully ignorant of why women might be more comfortable being alone with a wild animal than with a random man they don’t know (or really, any guy who asks them this question seriously). I’m sure some women would still pick Bear (gay) over these guys though.
