do i still have to care about software upgrade, server monitoring etc on unmanaged vps if I use Direct admin.. Do I still need to login using ssh and check all these stuffs after setup of direct admin?

may be not needed to login SSH for update. Because control panel like DirectAdmin, cPanel etc are smart enough to handle every update via there interface. But as a unmanaged VPS you need to take care of all updates and sever monitoring yourself.
