We’re only on our 3rd grazing season on our new ranch proceeded by two years on a smaller property. I completely agree, especially with acidosis and subsequently resulting in pink eye. I’ve seen so many producers around here, battle pink eye, but they are also the same ones that turn their cattle out when the grass is an inch tall. Our overgrazing mistakes last year are affecting us now this spring. We had a lot of drought followed by some poor management decisions resulted in too short of recovery periods. We pulled the animals off of grazing rotation and are holding them back this spring, and still feeding Hay. Not an ideal situation, but our pastures will finally have the maturity they need before putting them back out there. I absolutely hate seeing my cattle eating off the ground where they have been crapping the last three weeks. We are also calving in this paddock, which has resulted in a few of the calves scouring. It’s amazing how a few grazing management mistakes the prior year has such a profound, snowball effect. We are learning quickly, and will damn sure not make these mistakes again going forward. I’ve studied and read all the different grazing management techniques for years. Jaime’s total grazing system actually mimics nature. None of the other programs or systems, stress long enough recovery times, and sword maturity. The total grazing system makes the most sense with my limited experience. Thanks for the video.👍

I've been grazing a small herd regeneratively for 2 years now, learning and building with plans to expand that herd as I go. I've been watching your videos for a while now (maybe a year). This video was the single most helpful for me. It really helped put the pieces together. I knew many of the little tidbits of knowledge you shared but tying it all together the way you did was very helpful!

Josh you have a wealth of knowledge. I completely agree especially when you mentioned disingenuous people. Some “grass finished beef” guys in my area are feeding fertilized hay and still deworming and using pour on. You truly have to live and breathe regenerative agriculture to fully follow through with this management practice and mindset shift.

They know if we run cattle regeneratively they will go broke. Everyone wants the ranchers money and most ranchers give it to them not knowing any better. Good info keep it up!

Have you thought about planting some trees to make shade? Thanks for your videos, you give good advices and showing all from the field

Yes we plan on planting some trees but that’s a long term strategy. Either way we need cattle that can graze without shade except for maybe the very hottest days.

In our area, the northeast, most grass finished beef is a substandard product. It isn't easy producing a grass fed quality carcass that gives an eating experience equal to or better than the industry standard USDA Choice #2. Most so called grass finished beef harvested are actually heavy feeder cattle. The grass finished beef industry is infested with amateur producers that don't have a clue how to raise a quality product.

@@runningtfarmsnc Abundant marbling and nice cherry red color. You are doing it right. Most don't!

I identify as an amateur producer, so I’m here to learn. The local grass fed/finished beef at the grocery stores has little marbling. I’m optimistic that I can produce a well marbled beef based on what I’m learning from Josh and other likeminded producers.

I’m looking at getting a few acres of field in TN and wanting to get into owning and raising cattle. What resources would you recommend for learning from the beginning and starting raising cattle on a smaller plot of land?

For books I think the best one out there is Man, Cattle, and Veld by Johann Zietsman. If you would like to do some courses I would highly recommend Jim Elizondo’s Total Grazing Academy. His website is www.rwranching.com/

What is your source on the pinkeye acidosis correlation? I run stocker cattle and seem to have pinkeye year round on all forage types. No grain here.

I first heard Mark Bader talk about it, along with Jaime Elizondo and Will Winter DVM. It usually has to do with an excess of protein to fiber. Very common with grazing cool season forages when they are young. With stocker cattle I would assume it could also be stress related if you are sourcing them through sale barns or commingling cattle from different farms. Usually the management 30-60 days prior to an outbreak of pinkeye is the cause. could be very stressful weaning/sale barn experience or grazing immature or very high protein forages that are causing the cattle to scour. I am coming at it from a birth to harvest guy so our cattle never leave our farm until harvest and other than weaning which we try to make as stress free as possible (fence line weaning) our cattle are pretty much stress free. Before we corrected our grazing we used to have some level of pinkeye every year from extreme to just a handful. The last several years after doing a better job with our grazing it just hasn’t been a problem.
