Hello again from dry Yorktown, Virginia, where we have not seen a drop of rain in my rain gauge for 33 consecutive days. A lot of the self-help books claim that if an individual writes down their various goals, they have a much higher success rate. At age 61, I find if I do not write down short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals, I tend to get distracted by social media. Even though I memorize lists and know all 46 presidents, all 49 vice presidents, and so forth, I find it helpful to write down my goals each week.

Hi there. My theory is that writing down goals primes your Reticular Activating System - the part of your brain that spots things in your environment that are salient. By noting your goals, you tell your RAS what is salient. That way, if something that offers an opportunity to achieve or make progress on a goal comes into your orbit, your RAS can alert you to it and give you the chance to act on it. If, however, your RAS were not primed, that same opportunity may go unnoticed. Therefore, recording your goals can make it more likely you will achieve them! Goal: secure rain in Yorktown, for you.

@@ManagementCourses Thanks. Did you do a rain dance? The autumn leaves are near their peak but need a good watering. Your RAS theory makes sense, especially when we are bombarded by many things that aren't salient in 2024. I call it The Age of Misinformation.
