We need more of this man's attitude to nature before it's too late.....

John is a very progressive farmer who cares for the environment. We need more like him. It would be great to see more videos like this too.

Great video. Really shows how important native hedgerows are and how glorious they look when maintained properly. Hawthorn and blackthorn look incredible in late April and May when in full flower. They should be used a lot more in domestic gardens instead of the abundance of laurels and Leylandii that we see everywhere.

Flowering currant is another great plant for bees, it's always the first flower out in spring

May I ask how the hedgerow was cut in the first 1-3 years to get it so thick at the bottom?

Its a pity more Irish farmers are not like this man, we have to educate the young and hopefully we will have more bio-diverse areas in the farmland of Ireland in the future.

A great pity all farmers aren't a well informed and sympathetic to wildlife as this man. They as custodians of our countryside.

Thanks for sharing. I’m planting a 20 yard boundary hedge in my garden in Donegal. I so want to support bees etc. Any suggestions to the composition of my hedge? Interesting to hear comment about flowering current. My father grew this plant. Brings back so many memories.

It should be made law that hedges are managed like this, change is desperately overdue

Lovely video - But I have a little confusion. You say 'Whitethorn and Hawthorn' . . . aren't they the same thing? Perhaps you mean 'BLACKthorn and Hawthorn'. I am not expert - All the best

All white thorn are hawthorn but all hawthorn are not white thorn. Other words it is a species of hawthorn.

Would be great if more hedgerows could be managed like this. Perhaps a small change to the regulations governing EU payments would cause it to be implemented overnight?

More like that would ruin everything, as gov't is wont to do. Look to yourselves for the changes needed, not to gov't.
