I use apple cider vinegar with a few drips of detergents as bait, killing large numbers, but someone nearby must be breeding them.

I have fruits flies over my feijoas trees Trying to find solutions so I can enjoy fruits this years. Not sure I can find any chemical from my NZ areas. cloth bags interesting but needs a lot.

Hello DPIRD, My pumpkins are getting attached while they are very small even before the flowers open, I use netting, but the infestation is far more and I want to trap them. What can I substitute cloudy ammonia with?

I did the trap how you guys explain it but i got a lot of geckos into the bottle killing them!! i dont know if it is a good idea. The holes on the bottles where like in the video too. i dont know if it will work with smaller holes.

Thank you for you comment. The geckos are going into the traps after the flies. I presume they are small. Holes 8mm diameter should exclude them. It is also advisable to keep the trap clear from bridging foliage. I hope this stops the geckos entering. Thanks

@@DPIRD Put out well w sticky traps and you'll see the type AND SIZE of your insects. (Not effective for control.) Fruit flies can land and WALK IN, with folded wings.

The fruit fly is so bad in our area. We never had any until 2020. Now they get into all our fruit and vegetables. It’s so heartbreaking after all the hard work we put in to grow our own food. We have tried about every organic spray on the market and home made remedies and nothing is working at all. The council use to come around every year and spray and we never had a problem now it’s out of control 😔🤨

also i heard that insects dnt like cinamon..if u add cinemon to the soil ..no insect will cme close to the plant..ill try using cinamon in a bottle n spray all over my tropical almond tree to c if tht works..if it does .ill keep u updated

I hope this information below help you The only way is to screen the tree when the fruit is still green and half size. Baiting or trapping will not work with the high fly pressure in the suburbs and many country towns. Guavas are about the ultimate host for Medfly. Cheers

If making the spray, is there a particular insecticide you would recommend? Is there a risk to beneficial insects (including bees)?

Any insecticide -- even OMRI RATED -- can affect insect pollinators. That's why you should protect bees, spray ONLY WHEN TEMPS ARE VERY COOL or AT TWILIGHT. Bees will be sheltering then. If you apply to the soil, it's best to be sure that there are no flowering plants within a couple feet of a soil drench. We lost our whole crop to cherry fruit flies, so now we are moving everything that flowers May - August from the cherry beds. We will be treating the soil with SPINOSAD to kill the larvae.
