I've lived with seborrheic dermatitis (seb derm for short) my whole life and over the years I've done a lot of research into understanding why it exists, how it exists and how I can live with it (as its not curable as yet).
It means I've been able to enjoy my loc journey and not have it negatively impact me in my daily life. I hope the information I share proves useful for you too, if you're a fellow seb derm sufferer.
my #1 recommend site outside of general Google research is: simpleskincare...

I remember watching this video while I was obsessing over getting my hair locd. Never would have thought that I would end up right back here 3 years later. I've been dealing with an extremely itchy scalp and flakes galore. My locs are almost 3 years old now and for the first time I don't have flakes. My scalp is also very dry so using mct oil has been heaven sent! This video literally saved my scalp! Nizoral and MCT oil are now my staple products.

when I found out I had dermatitis I did some research and found out that cutting out dairy and gluten from your diet could stop outbreaks and so I tried it for about 3 months and it really helped my scalp. After not washing for 3 weeks I had no outbreaks I would definitely recommend trying that! along with using medicated shampoo for wash day.

This video was HEAVEN SENT. I got diagnosed with this last year after a biopsy performed by my dermatologist. She prescribed a Ketoconazole cream and a fluocinolone acetonide oil that has been helping a lot. But it is an ongoing thing, so it has kept me from starting my loc journey. I am so happy to have found you and WAY more confident that this can be managed when I finally empty out all of my loose natural hair products (cuz I don't waste money😂) and officially start my loc journey. This has been so helpful!! I have had bouts of seborrheic dermatitis since childhood and it has improved over the years. I no longer get it in the creases of my nose for instance. I figured out years ago (and quite by accident) that most oils are not my scalp's friend. This is first time though that I've learnt which oils I can actually use and I really needed this info now that I have sisterlocks. I'm sure you have no idea how far your help has reached and I want to encourage you to continue sharing and advising. Many thanks from the beautiful island of BARBADOS!

This video was EVERYTHING! I have suffered with seb derm for a few years now, but only in July 2020 did I learn the name for it, I always thought it was dandruff. I started my loc journey in September 2020 and my seb derm was pretty under control until about a week again. I was getting nervous that I would have to comb out my locs because I couldn't deal with the flakes/scales getting stuck in my roots, but this video gives me hope, so thank you!!!

Yo!!! This literally changed my life, after I got my hair insta loc’d my SD was worse than ever. Most likely because I was using tons of jojoba oil, olive oil, coconut oil etc. I have always wondered why it seemed like the products marketed to help with dry scalp seemed to make it worse. This is the first video I have seen that incorporates the science of what causes SD with how to care for locs. I was thinking about changing my diet, but I love cheese so I wasn’t ready to give that up. I used almost the same method with a few tweaks, and almost instantly my scalp was way better. I have had almost no dandruff or inching for two weeks. Before this my scalp would flake in sheets, I mean it felt like I was a snake loosing old skin. Seriously, I can’t thank you enough.

This is so informational! Thanks so much for sharing with us all! I don't have seborrheic dermatitis, but a few yrs into my loc journey I realized a lot of (carrier) oils are comedogenic & can cause allergic reactions or just irritation. It's a challenge to find things, natural or otherwise, that are good for both the scalp AND locs. If anyone is looking for a moisturizing product that they can purchase (bc DIY can be tiring at times lol) that is also oil-free, Oyin Handmade makes some wonderful ones w/ their 'Juices & Berries' line.

Wow!! Im so glad i found you this early into my loc journey. Ive been putting off locking my hair for years because of my scalp issues. Sometimes its fine but always gets bad with braids (esp cornrows) but finally i decided if i waited for perfect scalp conditions i would never do it so finally installed my microlocs but less than a week in and im seeing flakes everywhere!! Meanwhile my loctician has said not to wash or oil my hair for 6weeks!! Im worried i will look like a snow-globe if i follow that advice So wondering how often you would recommend a newbie with dermatitis to start treating hair with washes and oil etc.

@ladygigi9097
@ladygigi9097 7 ай бұрын
I have a really great loctician who for the first 6 weeks got me to come in every 2weeks for a scalp check. Just to monitor my scalp for flakes etc. She basically washed my hair before the 6 weeks but then fixed any slippage there and then. I also spray my hair with a water and Nizoral mix once a week and use mct oil as recommended here and i have to say the flakes are not as bad now and itching gone! But the key is having a loctician who is flexible and was open to washing my hair. She basically will not let me wash my hair on my own in this early stage so i feel quite taken care of. Literally just had my first re-tie today and im feeling good about the journey!!

I love the science based approach! When I think back to when my scalp was the most behaved it was when I was interlocking (so no products), washed with head and shoulders and bc I’m a lazy loc gal, I never oiled my scalp. Fast forward to now, I’m using products and oils since I’m palm rolling. Very informative video, thank you for sharing!

You're welcome! If you still want to use 'product' using fresh aloe Vera from the plant wouldn't hurt and then use any of the three oils I mentioned to seal in the moisture. It's up to you how strict you are. I still use ecostyler gel to retwist my hairline, which isn't good for my SD, but then I'm forever washing my hairline because of makeup etc. It's the trade-off I'm willing to make. If this is something you're wanting to get under control for the time being, then I would say avoid anything that's going to exacerbate it for a few months and see how/if it improves

I have watched probably over 50 videos looking for anything to help me with my seborrheic dermatitis. I have been loc'd for 6 years and about six months ago my scalp just started flaking like crazy. I must have used something on it to make it get triggered I have no idea. But my hair has started thinning at the top from all of the scratching and my locs have gotten thinner. This was so informative thank you! I stopped using oil on my hair all together because it always made it worse. I couldn't figure out why all of a sudden at 38 I can't put oil in my hair. I have used Sulfur 8 which has kept it under control right after a wash most of the time but I just started using that about a month ago. you thank you thank you! 🥰

Man I have terrible seborrheic dermititis. Like it feels like a layer of scalp on top of my actual scalp 🤦🏾‍♀️ So my hair has literally been growing like a wildlife due to this process I call intermittent locking'. After awhile tho I take my hair down and wash it. This time because it has grown so much I decided to wear my hair in box braids. I don't add weave just my natural hair. I made the unfortunate decision of using bees wax. Man I really thought I was doing something. About two days later I had flakes so big and thick and greasy I was over it ok. I literally was trying to comb it out of the braids and my scalp was on fire. Something is telling me that my diet needs to change. Like seriously. But I know for a fact that beeswax just the oil alone probably had my scalp like what tf she think she doing🤣 Thank you so much. I love intelligent people and you are so smart how you broke this down. I'm going to look for a medicated hair gel as well so at least I can still style my hair sometimes when I'm not wearing my scarf. You are beautiful and I love your voice. Your hair is absolutely stunning. God bless you beautiful ❤️ and thank you!

you know..... ive been suffering with this all my life I am now 23.. never quite knew how to manage it until doing my own research. As a black woman, everyone always told me to oil my scalp, oil my scalp, oil my scalp! which always seemed to make it worse but its what people told me to do. I've looked up things here and there and thought I had scalp psoriasis and would do dumb ass home treatments which also never worked but last year I finally figured out that I have seb derm and I realized I have to avoid triggers to my scalp AND treat it. if you treat it with shampoo but don't avoid the triggers ie OILS AND BUTtERs you will make no progress.... which I love to put oils and butters on my hair.. i have really thick and curly hair... I'm trying to avoid gels and butters but I love sleek styles and went on a huge product binge and have a bunch of stuff to use but just trying to keep it off of my scalp. I think I'm going to try doing research on more ingredients that I can use but I'm contemplating hair wax to lay my hair down and botanical gels..... still thinking..

PS literally everyone else on youtube gives the same advice that does nothing and you are the first to actually mention to avoid certain oils and butters. i can tell you did research which i appreciate because people think oils will help with the dryness but it'll literally cause flare ups and scaling.... like its literally making it worse..

Hey my dear! This video is VERY USEFUL. I've been using Nizoral since September, but not alongside Head & Shoulders (and not as frequently as i should be). Any oil I use seems to make things worse, and i've been really frustrated trying to work out what i'm doing wrong. Going to look into the oils you've suggested. Thanks so much.

Hey Wini! 👋🏿👋🏿👋🏿 I'm glad it's been helpful! I hope it works out for you! Yes using oils that feed the malassezia yeast cancels out all the hard work of the nizoral, it can be very frustrating! Try the caprylic acid and see how you get on ❤️

Thank you so much for this video and information! I dont know what I have, I think bad dandruff. So far, ACV rinses seem to at least temporarily make the itching and flaking better. You mentioned that it can make things worse, why is that? Seriously, thanks for this info. Also, happy holidays :).

Hi, I am so in love with your hair and personality. Thank you for this informative video. Just started my loc journey 2 weeks ago and I do have SD, so I was a lil worried about how I would continue to keep this issue under control while on the journey. So thank you again for these tips. I can listen to you talk all day!

Have you ever used a holistic approach by doing a yeast cleanse or used a holistic approach by using a anti microbial for a period of time?

blap oregano oil pills are a natural anti microbial when taken over a period of time it will kill the yeast. Also I used to suffer from dandruff but started using probiotics for another reason and the dandruff went away.

I'm in the process of my initial installation with sisterlocks, tomorrow will be my final day YAY! I'm being told not to wash my hair often, she said maybe every two weeks. How did you handle this when you were newly locked and trying to fight the scalp condition? Thank you so much for this video and your time

You're very welcome! Most of the time it's every 2 weeks, but when I have a bad flare up it could be twice a week. I don't try to stretch my washes that far because it gets really bad if I do.

Hi there. I've been toying with the idea of dying my locs since I've gotten my seb derm under control. I haven't had a flare up in quite some time and regular visits to the dermatologist has helped incredibly. How has your experience with dying your hair been? It's important to keep your dyed hair moisturized and even more so with locs... Considering we can't use a lot of hair products, I wanted to get your opinion. Thank you for the video!
@RoseDAnnor

Dying hair does cause a lot of damage, by the chemical nature of the process. If your scalp is healthy, then products like olaplex are great. If you have set derm like me you have to weigh up the pros and cons of such a harsh treatment without the availability of other conditioners and treatments to hand.

Wow, this video is so informative! I've been suffering for years. I also have alopecia in the front of my hairline, and patches in the middle of my head. I just ordered lavender, lemongrass, and rosemary oil along with aloe vera juice to help my hair grow. In assuming these arent good for my sbherrohic dermatitis?

Hey sweetie loved your video. It's quite informative. How do you get the flakes out after they get caught? My flare up has lead to severe itching and burning and flakes. The locs around my temple have flakes in them and in the back. My sister locs are 1 year and 6 months. Mostly locked. i don't want to cut them or my hair to fall out. Any advise is appreciated
