Managing the Crayons- Types, Storage, and Techniques to Teach in the Elementary Art Room

One thing I do is number each of my crayons, place them in a Ziploc baggie, and then place them inside a supply caddie at their table. It is a time investment, but I do it in the summer while I watch TV and it has been wonderful! We use the same crayons all year. I have seat numbers on each table and the student uses the crayons with their seat number. If a student loses a crayon, we know exactly where it came from and the students always have all the colors they need without having to dig. I include the special crayon colors inside each baggie, as well.

Hello Katie, I've been following your videos and have found them very inspiring. I work in secondary education in the UK, so it's interesting to see how things are done in Art Depts. in the USA. Something which I'm interested in hearing about is, at what age do you stop using wax crayons? In the UK they are generally not used at all (maybe Reception, ages 4-5 might use them) but we just have colouring pencils in school.

Thank you for watching! I teach ages 5-12 all use crayons. I’m lazy with sharpening so, I don’t use colored pencils! The older kids use them less often in art class because they use a wide variety of materials. Upper grades might outline with marker but fill in with crayon because it is faster.
