You say you don't understand "all that physics"...you perfectly used the concepts of "damped oscillators" (which IS an advanced field of classical Physics) and also explained it to a layman audience very, very well. (y)

Just today I faced vibration in my macrophotography. Thank you for great topic to discuss and for the tips!

Audiophile here… we use special vibration decoupling shims under our drivers (speakers) and phonographs that are made out of rubber. Their prices are nominal as well. I wonder if they would be suitable for this type of photography

This video is a great example of how wonderful the KZbin community is! Thanks for taking the time to experiment with vibrations, and be willing to share your results!!!

Excellent! Thanks for the nice words - I'm sure all the physicists and engineers out there are unimpressed, but it has worked to improve my vibration control for years, and that is good enough for me!

Thank you so much, Allan, very interesting. As far as I know, vibration is a matter of resonant frequency. The heavier something is, the deeper it is.

Hi. Alan. Very interesting video. I started to stack shots on a desk where at the other end was 3D printing machine. 😁. Then I realized I had vibrations. Any way. I approach vibrations in many ways but never thought on the movement along the lens axis and the out of focus effect. Very interesting. I use to mount specimens glued to pins, but instead single wire pins I use 3 o four thin cooper wires painted with black paint . They vibrate way les than single wire ones. Thank for sharing.

Allan, washing machines do not have three phase motors because you do not have three phase power in your home. Another way to dampen vibrations is to add mass. Heavy objects require much more power from a vibration source in order to vibrate because of their higher inertia. Making your work table heavier is a good start. Isolating your work table from the floor with vibration pads is another solution.

I live in a laundromat across from the power station and they swore I was getting all three phases - I need to learn about electricity. That is true (vibration), however, once the heavier table starts to vibrate it is going to be harder to stop it. But it is usually not a very practical solution - you can only add so much mass to a small work surface. I am so frustrated with the vibrations in this house, I am ready to try putting some bolts in the rafters and suspending a heavy surface. Or I could move.

It’s probably easier/faster to just mount a $9 3 -axis accelerometer for an arduino, and a $15 arduino and maybe 15 lines of code to just measure and display the vibration on your computer screen. You could even code in a frequency and amplitude output or a simple if vibration velocity is below x then make an led like turn on to know it’s settled enough

Taking 2 or 3 shots per step could possibly help (if Zerene picks the sharpest one from each step to use - not sure it would)

Hi Allan, why don't you call your 'vibration thingy' - Wall's Vibrometer! Cheers GeoGem

There's an old trick for dealing with low amplitude vibration. On a level table place four tennis balls then put a paving slab on top. Put your macro rig on the slab. Just take care not to push the slab sideways.

A slightly more sophisticated version is to use inner tubes from go-carts at each corner of the paving slab. The advantages are mainly that you can use different pressures in the tubes to get the slab 100% horizontal, but also not have to worry about the slab moving sideways in any direction or indeed, getting to set-point! Having the camera securely mounted on the paving slab would mean any vibration would be felt equally by the subject and camera, and this may have an additional positive effect YMMV.

Could you elaborate on why it does not matter if the subject is vibrating as long as the sensor is not vibrating? This is counter-intuitive to me since I would expect both the subject and sensor would need to be vibration free.

After watching this interesting tutorial..I’m wondering what effect it would have if your dehumidifier (if that was a huge issue) was to be set on a very thick rubber pad? …or any other motor that might be easily “muffled” in that way. Not a scientist of any kind and have no idea if that would make a difference..was just a thought.

Didn't get anything out of it. Sorry. I shoot in nature and nature itself. So using hack on nature, isn't my style. You don't pick up the golf ball and put it in a better position. You have to shoot where it lay 😉
