Agreed, but on the other hand if you have to travel a lot nothing beats being able to have an e-book reader with a whole bunch of books on at once. Light, compact, and the battery on the kindle brand lasts for weeks between charges. E book readers are also an inexpensive way to get a lot of classic books for which the copyright has expired.

@StopFear
@StopFear 7 жыл бұрын
CroweDharmaReloaded No. You're describing nostalgia about the times when there were no alternatives to paper books. People should want more people to read. Electronic books help with that and make life easier for everyone. It also lets more people get their books out. You can get a lot of data from e-books when others have highlighted passages. Electronic books are a good development in literature.

In the words of Stephen King, 'You read all my books? I feel bad for you.' I hope that you've also read the greatest stories ever written over the last 3,000 years because, if you spent all those years reading 10,000 pages of Stephen King instead of something really real like Homer or Shakespeare, then I feel very bad for you. It's like reading Twilight instead of The Lord of the Rings. Half of King's books are about 700 pages long and not worth it, objectively.

There is no substitute for holding a book in your hands, turning pages and seeing your progress as each page as you make your way to the end. I need to have hardcover copies of the books I read.

Back in the 80's when I was in junior high my mom was concerned that all I wanted to read was Stephen King. She said something to my reading teacher at parent teacher conferances about it. He told her Stephen King is probably one of the greatest writers of our time and will probably go down in history next to Mark Twain. The fact that I was that young and had read that many novels and short stories is amazing. He said who cares what he is reading, he is reading and understands what he is reading let him have at it. He told her he sees kids that are in their teens and never read a novel before. Your kid read "Eye of the Needle" in the fourth grade! After that he started reading King's short stories to us in class. Best teacher I ever had. Then he married my second favorite teacher our band director which would have been awesome except for whatever reason the moved after they got married. I was happy and pissed at the same time lol.

@@gregrobertson1292 I guess I would ask how many books your professor has sold. Or how many awards he has won. Or his students for that matter. Regardless of what he thinks about the man it is hard to deny King's success as a writer. Then again I suppose if you asked King if he was a good technical writer or a good role model he would probably tell you no.

As an amateur writer, (meaning I'm the only reader of my stuff), I found 'The Litigators' by Grisham to be an excellent example of character creation and development. I re-read 'The Litigators' every year. The other is Stephen King's, 'On Writing'. The unflinching discipline described by Stephen King is awe inspiring. Not long after reading Mr. King's 'On Writing,' I got on an elevator heading down to the lobby at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. Mr. King was there with a couple of friends, wearing a worn, regulation type Boston Red Sox cap, discussing the Sox game they would be attending later that night.

This reading time moved me forward to become a journalist of 30 years, a script writer, a story writer with music and most of all the passion of reading books....but mostly the courage to write books. This concept can be used in all schools and all grades. It was a time to read books at our own pace and choose our own books and most of all experience the wonderful world of books. Best of Luck.

I get enough screen glare from all my political pursuits on YT and others. If it's beyond a mere online article, I hate reading online. Books are cozy and also tactile and have a distinctive books smell as well.

I'm not a millennial. I have both "real" books and a Kindle loaded with books and don't seem to have an issue reading either. I don't know why there has to be a war about it.

I've never read any of Grisham's stuff but I was pleasantly surprised to hear his views on the death penalty and his reference to the Innocence Project. I have great respect for anyone who has the courage to stand against the death penalty in this day and age where so many are so very bloodthirsty.

I totally agree. I hope someday we will look back at our history and realize we were barbarians for killing people.

The death penalty is for a very select few. Like child murderers and rapists. People like the Wagners who executed an entire family, two of whom were sleepibg with their infant babies. What about Koglberger, another execution, of four college students. What about Bundy? What about Nicoke Brown Simpson, slaughtered! Sharon Tate, nine months pregnant, slaughtered? Jessica Chambers, burned alive?

When I was in high school we had a reading room for an English credit. We chose from racks of books and read in silence year round. This reading class encouraged me to become an avid reader, movie script writer, music script writer, journalist of 30 years and move toward writing a book. This program is for all ages in all schools. You are encouraged to read any book you like, finish the book and then move on to next book. Good luck!

Really love Stephen King and have read so many of his novels ... And just recently found Grisham's Time to Kill in a thrift store and absolutely loved it! I cheered at the end!

I've only read one John Grisham book. The Innocent man. His only non fiction book. Still one of my favorite non fiction books to this day. What an incredible story and writer. Incredibly emotional rollercoaster of a book. I'm not much into fiction but I do love some SK .....Carrie probably still being my favorite. Closely followed by The Stand and It...

A great chat. I remember reading 'Salem's Lot because I was compelled to know what happened and found the film too scary to watch at the time, only to find that the book was just as scary..

Aside from popular readership, the younger generation needs to read the earlier works. They need to know what a struggle it was. Sk and grisham will be in my nieces collection. Real life.

One though on Stephen’s humble beginnings, how unfair it is. Both him and his wife were well educated and they still had to live on a poverty line in a trailer somewhere. Such a shame, makes me really angry. They’ve done what needed to be done and the system was still kicking them in the teeth. Really happy they are here today to tell their stories. 💚

Greatly enjoyed this... I've read Mr King's account of how he got the news of the Carrie paperback deal in 'On Writing" but it's great to hear him tell it in person. I hope he kept that hairdryer!

Those are the dudes who still keep us reading - among few dozens of more really good international authors - and who drag our asses to the book stores and libraries and of course those wonderful worlds of story telling - oh, well... nowadays we obviously have those e-books and audio books too, but in my opinion the real hard cover book still really rocks and has that authentic magic - you have that world right in your own fingertips and you can just dive into it by opening that magical artifact - the book!

When I was in college, John Grisham only had Time To Kill out, the Firm was pending, and he came to talk to the creative writing class I was taking. Grisham's main advice for us was "Never write thinking you're going to make money. Nobody makes money from writing... except Stephen King, and I write better than he does." So he was wrong TWICE! :) Weird that they're buddies now.
