The full journey updated with new footage and captions. Shot in March 2019, this is a Middlesborough service as far as York. It goes around the Ordsall Chord to pick up Victoria and then off over the Pennines. Some interesting facts about tunnels and quite a variety of trains for enthusiasts.

As a spotter in the late-40s at Reading General, followed by Engineer on 180 ml railroad built in 1 1/2 yrs in the Oz outback (Pilbara) in the late 60s and a lapsed Hornby modeller, now living nr Philadelphia, I am thrilled to take one of your online trips through the north country. Till now, I have been riding Hastings' southern England routes because this was my country, train and charabanc, as a kid. But I gotta hand it to you, Don Coffey, you are the best railtour guide.

Don - your comment on the 185's 200 tons - an EE Type 4 (Class 40) weighed in at 2000 tons and would have struggled to perform at this level. This journey, via the Ordsall link, demonstrates how good the Manchester rail network actually is. Excellent video as usual.
@doncoffey5820
@doncoffey5820 5 жыл бұрын
I think you mean a Class 40 was 200 tons? Yes 185s are heavy. They are about 165 tons unladen which does restrict them speed wise on some routes - they are classed as locomotive, i.e., must not run at SP or MU speeds despite being Class 1 trains. Its about power to weight ratio and tractive effort. A 185 with all engines running is 2250 HP (less a chunk for air conditioning and lighting). However, I doubt it would pull a 1500 ton stone train like a loco would. Thanks for the positive feedback.

Another excellent video, beautifully shot and informative. As an ex canal boatman, I spent many a happy hour 'train spotting' as I travelled the waterways. Since canals and railways share the same requirement for terrain, i.e. the shortest possible route with the fewest elevation changes, they often run alongside one another. With regard to the adits in Standedge Tunnel, you can imagine what it was like for the poor boatman in the days of steam trains, filling the canal tunnel with smoke and steam!
@doncoffey5820
@doncoffey5820 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, when a train comes through the tunnel it acts like a piston and there is a definite rush of air through all the adjacent passages of which there are many. I guess smoke made it to the canal even though it was lower.

fantastic cab rides. I like all the text commentary which makes it easier to understand everything that's going on for those of us that dont drive trains. I dont see that too often in train cab videos (its more common on driving videos). I was in Manchester in the summer of 2017 when I visited the UK. I stayed at the YHA hostel in Castlefield. Superb work, Don! I especially appreciated the written commentary, packed with details contemporary and historical; and the information about train working (eco driving, the signals etc.) is all so informative. I especially liked the way you put still photos in of major stations and of the shafts of Morley Tunnel; and the explanation of the Standedge Tunnels was outstanding - informative and very clear. I know this line well, as I lived and worked in Leeds between 1976 and '79 and still have friends there and in Manchester. Exchange station was still there then, with that extraordinary platform stretching right into Victoria. It's unrecognisable now. Until I watched your video I had not realised that just about all the long-distance trains from south of Manchester to the North-East use the Ordsall Curve. I well remember them using the Guide Bridge Line. I also used the Stalybridge to Stockport shuttle a lot. One repeated idle amusement I've had about this route is to wonder about the Leeds New Line and the Micklehurst Loop. If they had survived, could they have had any impact on the current plans to improve line capacity and speed on the Manchester to Leeds route? After all, they, plus the existing main route, gave the LNWR four tracks all the way from one city to another. But maybe the New Line and the Micklehurst Loop would be too slow to fit in with modern practice. I'm not surprised this has had so many views and likes in the time it's been posted. Thank you!

Thanks Martin - much appreciated. I’ve tried to spread a variety of “interest” in magazine style over most of the later videos so that watchers will progressively build their knowledge. Regarding the closed lines, I often wonder how many would get closed if they only survived to the present day. My guess is that none would be closed. Of course their demise came when the prospect of a personal transport (car) was far more appealing than a strike ridden, decaying railway. It was such a shame.

Thanks for the positive feedback (I do publish the negative ones and thankfully they are few). I have terrible problems with the sun especially in the winter but they ease as the days get longer and it gets up out of the way! The best days are slightly overcast but dry. The showers in this video were not forecast but as there are so many reasons why I have to bin footage because the camera hangs or an instructor needs the train etc, I decided it was good enough and representative of a typical run.

All steam hauled, the Micklehurst loop and all 4 lines through Standedge tunnel all working. I’m not sure what goes on with definition. It leaves me at 2.7k but I’m not always convinced it uploads that high. I complained to Apple who sent me a software upgrade and the latest one I’m working on seems much better. Let’s see how KZbin handles it.

Did the journey out on Wed 3/12 and returning Thurs 5/12. Enjoyed the run out over Standedge very much and looking forward to the return trip. I spoke to a TPE manager on the train into Man Picc about a previous cancellation and got around talking about my trip mentioning your vids. He said that he worked with you and that you had done grea job raising money t for charity. I can’t remember his name but he had an Id lanyard with lots of first aid badges attached etc. Really nice chap. But thanks once again for the inspiration Don and I hope that you had a great holiday.

I only work part time now Keith - a fortnight on and a fortnight off. I’m back in on Sunday and he’ll probably mention it when I bump into him (not sure who he was). Most of them are good as gold and I’m glad they looked after you. Did you ride on a trusty 185 or one of the newer types?

Travelled out on a 185 and sat across the table from a retired BR signal engineer and nattered about major signal upgrades he’d been involved in including the WCML and ECML so the journey ended up a double whammy of engineering heaven. I hope to make a few more rail trips in the new year over the TPE and Northern routes, I’m also looking forward to seeing your next rail video. Hope you’ve got a lot more videos to put onto KZbin before you fully retire. Keep up the great work Don it’s much appreciated by many.

What a brilliantly informative and wonderfully produced video. What a time we live in where I can be stuck at home because of a virus yet can reach around the world (all the way from Australia in my case) through videos such as this. The volume of educational material you manage to put into what many might call "a boring video looking out the front of a train" is remarkable. The coverage of the pantograph system right at the end, stuff I happened to know but that's not really the point, is a great example. The other things that stood out to me were first of all the remarkable history of a region that has global significance when one considers the Industrial Revolution with all that entails. The other, inextricably linked with that, is the incredible scale, ingenuity and, perhaps most boggling of all, sheer volume of work that those tunnels, canals, viaducts, bridges and earthworks demonstrate. To think it was done brick by brick or with shovels and blasting powder and so on seems so impossible to contemplate it simply wouldn't occur to most that it in fact was done that way. The great way you explain Standedge tunnel is perhaps the perfect example, with the canal from 1811 up to the final twin bore some 80 YEARS later. Great stuff, thanks.

@@doncoffey5820 I'm sure it does take a lot of effort, which is why I was only too happy to take the time to reply. An hour and a half and I found it all interesting. Funny you should say we Aussies are always saying nice things as it's not necessarily something for which we're famous, LOL. Cheers p.s. here's something you might enjoy, a video of a famous steam engine over here back on the tracks doing trials after a major overhaul and boiler re-work. It's famous due to the fact that in 1964 it set the record for the quickest Sydney to Newcastle (168km, or 105 miles) trip, just under 2hrs 2 minutes, something it held until our version of a modified InterCity 125 (called and XPT) beat it by 6 minutes in 1988. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fInSXmmLq7xmp80

Thanks again Don. Longsight TMD (engine sheds as was) holds memories of my cousin and I going train spotting there on a platform ticket from London Road (Piccadilly) in about 1955. We managed to avoid staff for all of two minutes before we were threaten with hell fire and damnation by him before we were packed off on the next train back. Happy days.

Yet another fantastic video and possibly my favourite. Did you know that, for many years, Church Fenton played host to RAF Church Fenton (now Leeds East Airport), a satellite station of RAF Finningley, just north of Sheffield (now Robin Hood Airport). They were rapid response fighter stations charged with escorting Soviet bombers over the North Sea. In it's latter years Church Fenton focused as a mainly training station before eventually closing in 2013?

An excellent video Don, I learned a great deal. Many thanks also for the superb views of the inside and outside of Morley tunnel and down the enormous ventilation shafts! I remember one of the first safety films recorded on video tape, rather than on ciné film, that was made in Morley tunnel in the late 1960s (although I never saw the finished video) where they used a spot right under one of the ventilation shafts because of the extra light. There were extra ‘flaggies’ used and much co-operation with Traffic Control. Morley Tunnel was used because it was then less busy than Kilsby tunnel with its very large vent shaft. I remember also getting the opportunity to look down the large shaft (in a car park then!) in the Huddersfield tunnel when the Civil Engineering Department were repointing brickwork and had scaffolding and a material lift provided. I really admired the Victorian civil engineering! On your video we get a brief flash of light as we passed under this shaft. Thank you again for the excellent video and evoking memories of my own railway days. Rob.

Excellent series , the railways of Manchester sure have changed, for the better, since I knew them in the seventies and eighties, Platform 3 at Victoria used to be part of the longest platform in the UK which stretched as far as the old Victoria Exchange station, it was used by the numerous newspaper trains that used to play their way over night across the country, I believe it stretched for nearly a mile......cheers
