This season has been weird for us because we play well in most games but defensive errors and a bit of bad luck at times have cost us 3 points in some games this season. And to the people that say it's a aging squad that is just not true. Only "old" players we have is KDB and Walker the rest are all 30 and below with no outfield player being over 29. I think recruitment was a massive problem this summer. Giving walker a 2 year deal and not gundo the same was baffling. Overrall recruitment was bad because we clearly didn't have a back up plan after failing to sign Jude Bellingham because the profiles of players we were linked to were all completely different

Not rl it's a transition from the man city of old u guys lack a playmaker like KDB, Gundoğuan, and Bernardo Silva is slowly regressing in terms of technical ability now u have to rely on one playmaker and that is Jeremy Doku while u guys have a Target Man profile like haaland and Second Striker like Julian alvarez have wingers like foden and grealish it won't be the free-flowing attack nature of man city but more structured and defensive type of city this season considering they need new playmakers bc the playmakers of old can't just keep up with the game anymore

I’m not sure how people can mention loosing mahrez and gundo in the transfer market and not mention Laporte or cancelo and Palmer. With those 5 players gone injuries to kdb and stones people are still shocked by these results. It’s not shocking we’ve gotten rid of 8 players and through injuries and suspensions are missing a whole first 11 from last year and replace with sup par quality players in Nunez and kova. These results are expected not shocking tbh

The only thing I'd pick from this and it can be counted as knitpicking, when you mentioned teams prioritising competitions and people seeing that going out of Europe gives you room to get fit and ready for the next PL game. I'd argue that can be worse for you as for example when Arsenal got knocked out of Europe by Sporting Lisbon cleared their schedule however, when it came to crunch time, they had 5-8 days to stew on their results and have the oppurtunity to get out of rhythm albeit in training or games and stutter as they did against Saints and West Ham. On the other hand when City were playing every 4 days and because of Europe where City did not have time to think and always playing and keeping in a Rhythm and just chugging out results kept them going through the end of season crunch.

Man city problems this season are: 1: failed to replace gundo as a key part in midfield. Kovacic and nunes have underperformed massively until now, losing a place to even rico lewis, who's 18 2 system problems. Forcing players out of position is a massive risk, because you alter their growth on the position they currently are in, or not play to their strenghts. Gvardiol ain't a LB, and alvarez isn't an AM 3. Formation issues. Let's be honest, 3-2-4-1 wasn't going to work in long term.the thing that made it click was the defensive workrates of silva and grealish on the wings, wich isn't there anymore 4. Aging squad. City do have an aging squad, and that will make the players burn out quicker than young ones

Nunes has been good only reason he isn't starting is because he competes with bernardo and rodri for a starting spot and kovacic was brought in to do what he is doing now. With the system point I disagree because I think pep has enough credit in the bank just for people to suddenly say his system isn't working. On the aging squad matter I disagree again. Outside of walker and kdb there isn't anyone over 29. Most of this season the bad results have come after we've played well. I think Walker and Gvardiol maybe needs to be dropped and when kdb comes back drop alvarez. I think our main problems has been missing key players like kdb, stones and rodri at times

As a city fan myself i must admit something is off this season that hasn't felt like last seasons or years before. In 21/22 We had a bad patch around September/October. We drew to Southampton lost to palace, Lost to PSG drew to Liverpool. 22/23 we had bad form drawing to Everton losing to Brentford losing to Southampton in the cup as well as losing to united and spurs. This season it feels like a hangover, a really big one. Last season we saw it with Liverpool that after very nearly winning a quadruple they just couldn't keep up the consistency and i think that is what is happening with us. But then again Guardiola is Guardiola he is the best manager around whether you like it or not and i have full trust in him to bring success to city this year again whether that be an FA cup or a Champions League You can just never write us off. I already know this will be how Man City have dropped off a bit recently. So I’ll say about the analysis I have done of city. City sold majorly important players to them, including gundogan, loaning cancelo again, etc. Add in the fact that they have lost kdb to injury, they have had to insert Alvarez into that position in the mean time or in the striker position. City have very slim depth, where as previously they have had loads of depth. This decline in personnel isn’t exactly surprising, no player wants to be at the top level at a top team sitting on the bench for a majority of games, city realistically got it wrong in the aspect of getting rotation players, they need to have a cycle of having a back up for 2 years, if they impress put them in the starting 11, or if they underperform a bit, cut your losses. I relatively believe that once January comes, a few signings come in (especially in left back and midfield) they’ll bounce back. At this point you should hire me for a job 😂😂 I’ll take 20p a hour for the opportunity 😂

City's biggest issue for me is midfield and RW. Their best RW is also their best CM but the midfield looks more stable when PEP plays Kova & Rodri because Rodri plays more freely cause Kova can cover for defensively. Just like Jorginho & Rice n recent games. Playing Alvarez as a 10 on works when they have someone like Kova who can retain possession from the build up phase and break through the opposition's press.

As a City fan, it’s easy: the board bottled the summer transfer window by letting too many quality, experienced and GA players leave while bringing in too many young, inexperienced low to none GA players especially with midfield. Pep could be making it worse playing some players out of position due to lack of quality/injury (flies back to board bottling summer) and then asking players to deliver performances they are not capable of doing (alvarez as a 10, Walker attacking overlapping RB, playing Gvardiol as a LB instead of his actual position CB etc). Put together, it’s a shit-sandwich. Think about this: with the departures of Gundo & Mahrez, City lost 45GA, with KDB that’s another 41GA or 86GA total. Who did the board bring in to realistically chip away at that huge deficit? Doku for 15-20? Who else? City board bottled it and it all comes back to them and their poor strategy this summer

@@rcr03 Very fair questions. From my understanding, Palmer and Pep did not get along very well - Palmer wanted to do his own thing, and as we know, you do what Pep wants or you're out. I'm sure it wasnt quite as black & white as I am making it, but there was def friction there. As for Mahrez, I think it was a bad decision. Think of it like this: who could City have gotten for 30m with his experience, him being a game-changer and of course, 28GA he had across all comps? No one. And yet instead of trying to convince him to stay - like they did Walker - they let him go. For me, the City board bottled the transfer window

This does feel different to last season Last season it felt like they were playing well in their old style but not quite gelling with Haaland at times or becoming too reliant on him This season it feels like they're genuinely not playing well in half the games they're playing. They don't have the old reliables to fall back on and they are making a lot more basic errors and conceding LOTS more basic goals than they were. City's strength under Pep has generally been their defence and midfield, it says something that their defence is not great and half their key midfielders have been sold. It doesn't help that some of the key players (looking specifically at Walker) are getting older and maybe starting to plateau a bit. Overall yes, this is different to last season. I wouldn't be surprised to see them rebound this season but I also wouldn't be surprised if we saw them completely falter and end 4th or even 5th

Another reason we've been less good this season is because gundo left. He was a more defensive minded midfielder, so we had more defensive cover, whereas bernardo, alvarez and foden are more attacking minded. Yes kovacic is a defensive minded player, but he isnt city standard, and isnt reliable due to injuries. That lack of a double pivot leaves us more open at the back, meaning we're more prone to counter attacks. But lets be honest, when kdb is back, we'll go on an unbeaten run for like 15 games again.

Don't think people fully grasp the change in City over the Summer. Losing three key players, while also not really replacing them in general, Even if say Doku could turn out to be an incredible player for them, he's not there right now. Not to mention how KDB has been out the team for a while now. So in a sense, they lost FOUR key players. Like, I remember years ago when Villa got relegated, they mainly did, cause they sold basically their core/spine of their team. So finding that is going to be hard, but it's also extra hard when you factor in that years ago, it was only really Liverpool that gave City competition/problems. Now, there is Villa on the rise, Newcastle on the rise, Brighton on the rise, Spurs always being an annoyance, Arsenal seemingly have really clicked themselves too. The league isn't an open case any more, so for a club, even at City's size to go in a transitional phase, will be like a risky move, given the strength of teams these days. I doubt City will win the league this year, but next season, as I suspect they'll spend again, they'll be more dangerous than ever.

As non-fan of them I thought their transfers were very odd, losing Mahrez, Cancelo, Gundogan and not really replacing them like for like. Then selling Cole Palmer who you thought would naturally replace Mahrez. Gvardiol is fine, he's one of the most highly rated young centre-backs in Europe who can also play left back, has all the physical qualities to play in this league and I think will turn out to be a great player once he is used the league a little more and effectively replaces Laporte. But no one came in to replace Mahrez, no left footed fleet footed scoring winger (again you'd think Cole palmer would be great here), Kovacic is a good player, but he is a dm/ball recycler type player not a creative goal scoring threat like Gundogan is, Cancelo offered a lot of threat from both full back positions, and was better on the ball than most of their current full back options and even has a goal threat (yes you can argue he was on loan last year so they didn't fully use him but you'd still think he'd offer them a lot). I don't particularly rate Nunes, he seemed honestly like a panic buy because they didn't get other targets. Plus Doku looks great, but he's raw and it seems odd focusing on a position that pushes Grealish out of the team who seems important to how the team plays. I wonder whether the pressures of FFP have shaped their transfer thinking? Getting older players off the books that they didn't want to give new big contracts to (like Mahrez, Cancelo, Laporte and Gundogan) and replacing them with younger, improving but not proven players who likely aren't wanting the same massive wages yet, and also banking those transfers fees. You have to wonder whether this drove the board to agreeing to sell Mahrez and Laporte, banking that 50+ million for older players and getting their big wages off the wage bill and stopped them giving a big wage to Gundogan, in the hope the younger players would step up. You wonder whether this also was the reasoning for the previous years sales of Jesus, Zinchenko and Stirling, important players that had played big roles at the club, but they actually made a net transfer profit last year. Their net spend over the last 3 seasons, whilst still a large amount of money, is around £150 million, whilst at the same time lots of senior players on big contracts have gone - Stirling, Jesus, Gundogan, Mahrez, Laporte, Cancelo.
@Ballotubie
@Ballotubie 5 ай бұрын
Most of the players you named left because of lack of game time. With Cancelo he fell out with pep and their relationship looks unfixable. Mahrez and Cancelo both signed new deals but as mentioned before lack of game time and falling out with the manager meant they were sold. None of this has to do with FFP or saving money on the wage bill

@@Ballotubie What are you talking about? Mahrez played 47 games, Gundogan 51, Cancelo played 26 in half a season. Only really Laporte had been out of the team and iirc he'd had injuries, plus they had all been integral to the team the season before as well. Palmer may have wanted game time but he was getting it start of the season and not hard to tell him he'd get loads more as Mahrez had left.

@@tajj7 This is how I know you don't watch city at all. Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus, Zini, Laporte and Palmer were all squad players before they left. Cancelo as I said already left because he fell out with pep, why do you think we would randomly loan him to a ucl contender in january. Gundo leaving was a club decision he wanted a 2 year contract the club only offered one ao he left. Being good in previous seasons in a pep team doesn't really mean much. Btw even after Mahrez left Palmer was still coming off the bench

@@tajj7 Where did I say Gundo was a squad player? I said he only left because we didn't offer him the contract he wanted. In Mahrez's case he played a combined 136 minutes in the UCL knockouts and 11 from the quarters on wards. He got dropped for the FA cup final even after scoring a hattrick in the semis. So yes he was a squad player. Julian Alvarez played 49 games last season was he not a squad player?

I think City has a bit of an issue where most their players aren't really as good as most people believe. I think playing in such a well functioning team really REALLY makes them look good. Obviously this doesn't apply to players like KDB, Haaland or Alvarez, but players like Rodri, Stones and Walker maybe. Idk, this is just my opinion.

my worry as a City fan is Pep signed Phillips last summer and he turned out absolutely useless, now he signed Kovacic & Nunes and doesn't seem to trust them, starting 19 yr old RBs in midfield ahead of them, it's not that we haven't replaced the big players that left, it's that we may have made the wrong signings

Normally it would be foolish to rule out City for the Premier League title but with De Bruyne, Haaland and Stones having injuries and Rodri getting suspended for fun and Kovacic and Nunes are supbar replacements of Gundogan and City still refuses to sign a left back after Mendy and wasting Gvardiol, Ake and Akanji at left back while foolishly sold Laporte and Mahrez. I would be concerned for City this season. 1 win in 6 games is shocking from City's standards.

I think City this seasson is a complete mess with their planning of the seasson, they didn't actually had replacements in mind, Kovacic and Doku are completely different from Mahrez and Gundogan, and they didn't even wanted Matheus Nunes, they signed him just because KDB injury was bad, so basically it feels like Pep or maybe the board didn't actually belived that they would lose their players, and when they lost them, they hit the panick button and signed whoever they felt like. Also another problem that everyone forgets it's Kalvin Phillips, he was supposed to rotate with Rodri but he ended up being a massive failure, Pep clearly don't belive in him anymore, he should be leaving in January, i just hope that Man City sign a good replacement

We signed Nunes and Kovacic to make up what we lost in gundogan. Our main target was Bellingham and we couldn't get him so then went for Paqueta who would've been perfect but then the betting scandal came out. Then we wanted Eze who is completely different from Gundo and eventually settled on Nunes. I do like Nunes and think he has been good when he has played (except the wolves game)

I don't really know because I don't give two shits about Man City enough to say. You can't write any club off in December. Any team can go on a crazy or awful run of form in the new year. Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa, Spurs etc could suddenly go on a 5 game losing streak or they could do the opposite. Everyone but City fans should be rejoicing though because they all go on about how competitive the Premier League is but then it's the same team dominating it every year and the same 4 clubs always sat in the top four. I genuinely hope Man City's poor run of form continues and that Villa's great run of form continues, its refreshing. I don't want Arsenal to win the league because I think Mikel Arteta is a whiny little gobshite but I'd rather see them win it than City. Just anyone besides City. As a Liverpool fan I pray we win it but after what I saw on Sunday against Man United I've honestly lost hope. Top four maybe but the teams mentality stinks and I hope it was just a one off, chance of redemption this weekend but if we play like THAT again then Arsenal pretty much have a free win.

Gvardiol feels a little disappointing nowadays. If he clicks, the defense will be better automatically. If he doesn't, the load will fall on Dias and Walker almost entirely and they might pay for it with such a loaded schedule.
