Manchester Metrolink - Light Rail in Manchester, UK 2016.

Manchester became the first city in the UK to acquire a modern light rail tram system when the Manchester Metrolink opened in 1992. 25 million passenger journeys were made on the system in 2012/13. The present system mostly runs on former commuter rail lines converted for light rail use, and crosses the city centre via on-street tram lines. The 45.6 mi (73.4 km)-network consists of six lines with 69 stations (including five on-street tram stops in the centre). An expansion programme is underway which will create four new lines to add to the current three and will be at least 99 stops, 62 more than in 2010. Manchester city centre is also serviced by over a dozen heavy and light rail-based park and ride sites

When they were first introduced they used the previously train route of Bury-Victoria so the doors had to be high to reach the platforms of the stations.

There is a reason for that. When the tram lines were first built they used a combination of old railway outside of the city centre and new lines across the city centre. The railway stations had high platforms and it was easier have trams with high doors than rebuild all the old platforms. The new trams stops in town were built high to be in line with the doors.

The whole central portion should have been put in tunnel from the start IMO. Why does Britain waste billions duplicating and triplicating infrastructure in London and spend almost nothing on the provinces? For the costs of the unnecessary Crossrail line proper Metro networks could have been built in Bristol, Leeds, Birmingham and Edinburgh. Woeful.

Have you been on the central line during peak hours? It’s almost dangerously packed and it gets so hot. I under the frustration but there’s enough money for everyone if only the gov would actually prove it and invest for once.

These manc ones are horribly squeaky and creaky. I hope the tracks don't pass by homes at Nottingham NET does. Residents would go loopy at that headachy noise, this would be better muted with a musical soundtrack imo

Gena F We have quiet similar Bombardier cars in Frankfurt, running through a residential area. There for all weels are now equiped with noise absorbers. This works great. In addition some narrow curves have integrated sprinklers which spray a lubricant on the rails to prevent these unpleasant high frequent noises.

@@birdyedits4051 I've been on both, Its hard to choose between one cos Nottingham and Manchester have nice trams, but in terms of the size of Network Manchester wins easy. I'm biased so I prefer Manchester but Nottingham is nice too.
