I love how Robson got us into Europe and they hardly invested in him at all and then they sack him and Souness comes in and they give him £8.5 million for Boumsong, £9 million for Luque and £17 million for Owen. I think bringing Souness in the first place was an insult to poor Bobby. His Blackburn side were shot to pieces by the time he left. Worse’s decision in Newcastles history and we paid the price for decades. Imagine if we give that money to Robson? The talent he would have signed? They seen what he did and took over and that’s when it fell apart

a lovely man but strange that as Eng manager, he is regarded as one of the best when he failed in 3 of the 4 tournaments, and only a half decent performance v WG in 90 redeemed his reputation. Today, he would have been fired after the first failure in 83 and Eng never truly dazzled under him. Venables and Hoddle squeezed more flare from England. But he was a v hard man to dislike.
