That bit isn't in the original novel. Mrs Danvers originally just disappeared. She's described as packing up all day, getting a phone call, probably from Favell, then disappearing. When exactly she set fire to Manderley isn't clear. All screen productions however show Mrs Danvers setting light to the place and likely dying as a result.

The only weak link of this film was Armie Hammer’s Maxim De Winter. His performance just lacked any depth or intensity that Laurence Olivier brought so wonderfully to the role in the Hitchcock version. I mean for someone whose legendary family home is being burnt to a crisp, he doesn’t sound at all shocked.

The best Rebecca is the English miniseries Rebecca 1997.

The best one, in my opinion, is the 1979 one. The actress who played Mrs De Winter is the mother of the actress who played Mrs De Winter in the 1997 version.

@@silviagladys1270 almost same but the only difference is that in 1940 movie is that the dead of Rebecca was an accidental and Mrs davers ending, but in the novel winter killed his wife and Mrs danvers left unknown after burning down the place, further in 1940 movie Rebecca , it was Mrs danvers jealous over Mrs winter and love for Mr . winter opposite to the novel and 2020 movie..
