Martina calls this her "Prodigal Daughter Returns Home" moment. Starting 1975 (when Navratilova defected to U.S. seeking asylum) Martina said she was a nonexistent nobody in Czech. The authorities there removed her name from all texts and records like she never existed. Playing Fed Cup back in her homeland meant the world to her. Even tho she was by now a U.S. citizen, her Czech blood runs deep ! She said a lot came to her matches to see if she had turned into a freak as legend would have it---LOL! Obviously an emotional week for Martina and she kept it together and won all her matches. The crowd reaction to her speech (in Czech) at the end says it all !

In the ESPN Documentary on their rivalry- 'Unmatched' Evert talked about how great it was to see Martina finally get her due. As spectacular as Martina could be- she never had the fan's support in her heyday, it was nice seeing a crowd behind her.

Funny at the beginning, how umpire introduces "Navratilova Czechoslovakia" but immediately corrects himself "Navratilova USA" :-DAlso, the the end, Martina says "I hope it won't last another 11 years till I may come again." Fortunately not, as in 1989 iron curtain fell.

Po martinine projevu na koci je krasne videt, kdo v hledisti byl fanousek tenisu, a kdo estebak. Jedni tleskaji, druzi zaryte cumi. After Martina´s speech at the very end it is clearly visible, who in the audience is tenis fan, and who member of comunist secret police. Fans are applauding, policeman and agents sitting with rude faces. Communist government went nuts after that. Originaly TV couldn´t (and didn´t) broadcast the final ceremony at all, fortunately it´s been archived. Brief translation of what she said in czech - first of all I´d like to thank all of you for coming here (long applaus), you´re all great fans, not only of the players, but mainly tennis itself, which is the most important for us as players. For me, it was even more special, I´really haven´t expected such warm welcome, and I hope (applaus) I´d like to thank you from deep of my heart, and I hope it won´t take anothe 11 years to come back here again and play tennis. Thank you.

We Czechs were on both sides !!! But we were Russian colony (1945~1989 given to Russia by war winners) and so we supported both Hanka Mandlíková and Czech Martina Navrátilová with the USA passport, because it WAS OUR PROTEST AGAINST RUSSIAN OCCUPATION of Czechoslovakia and Russian 1968 invasion to Czechoslovakia😢Comunistic Prime minister Štrougal had left before the end of the match. THE ENTIRE MATCH WAS 100% POLITICAL ISSUE GIVING US CZECH WONDERFUL CHANCE TO PROTEST AGAINST RUSSIAN OCCUAPATION OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐💕

Ye now is better Czechs girls sold for sex Americans and west rich people (xvideos...) ... Now Czechs is free of women , free of normal life, free of tradition, free of pride, free from the development of sports Good luck with this freedom when you want! I think that the Czech Republic is a much larger colony of the West than it has ever been the USSR, but money buy everthing... If you want be slave , be slave...

Mandlikova played well in the 1st set where as Navratilova made more unforced errors as usual. Mandlikova appeared underweight and she was obviously in pain from her hand in the 2nd set.

borgtennis Hana was diagnosed as borderline anemic during this summer. She tried the Haas diet that worked so well for Martina. It clearly wasn’t for her. The hand is a curious thing. She sprained it against Graf in Paris which is why she lost so bad to Chris in the semis playing that match in tears. I doubt it’s the same injury by this point. After this she would fall during an exhibition in Pennsylvania and sprain her ankle right before the Open. She never really was the same after that.

Nic moc. Ale trapná byla moc. To máš pravdu.

It’s interesting to see that our news media more or less misrepresented the crowd in this match. They were very fair and even warm to Martina. But they were rooting for Hana and invoking their rhythmic clapping for her, not Martina. The cheer for Hana is clearly louder during the introductions as well. Far different from how this was reported by the American sports media, including Chris Evert.

STJB .3 the crowd did. Clap louder and longer for Martina than Hana - it’s right here twice ( they announced them separatively twice

Len Welch I don’t know what to tell you. But it’s very clear during intros that the crowd was pulling for Hana. Not even close. Also when Hana saves break points in the first set those are the loudest cheers of the day. In the second set the Czech rhythmic clap is invoked several times on Hana’s behalf. That’s never done for Martina.

It's worth remembering that the Fed Cup was a totally different format then. The whole event was played over the space of one week, with matches between several different nations. In that week in Prague, the USA Team played China, Spain, Italy and Germany and Martina played ten matches in all between singles and doubles. It's perfectly possible that Martina was given a standing ovation during the week she was there and that neither Chris Evert nor the US media were misreporting.
