I first watched this video after I had been playing for 4-6 months, and I just wasn’t quite ready for it. Now, after having played for a year, I was totally ready for it, and as a previous comment said, I became a better mandolin player after only running through it a couple of times with my mando in my hands. One of the most helpful mandolin videos I have seen on KZbin

So fluid..., resonates right and tight to the bone. I could listen to this for hours. Good pace for teaching the non-beginner. Thank you Don.

That was super cool and right on! That Pentatonic plus the flat three are the notes of the "Lester Flatt G Run" I have a buddy who is a world class Mandolinist who says, "Jazz is all about I-VI-II-V, and Bluegrass is all about the Lester Flatt G Run." I use it on I and IV and something with the third and the flatted seventh on the V chord. This was a highly informative video. I subscribed.

Pentatonic in a piano was much easier than this. But still you taught us in the most simplest way. Thank you so much. Please teach us more.

I just started playing the mandolin about 2 weeks ago, but I've been playing guitar and banjo for around 6 years with bluegrass. I would have to say, Ibanez is a great mandolin brand to start out with, the lower priced models are around the best inexpensive mandolins around. I picked one up for around 200 dollars, but there are many more that are good for even lower price, just look it up

I like Kentucky's and Eastmans for good quality, entry level instruments. There are many choices but thes two brands seem consistently solid to me.

Any inexpensive off-brand plywood top mando you can find for under $100! Better to invest in lessons than in a more expensive mandolin. Once you are sure that you are liking and adapting to the mando, you can later buy a better mandolin. I now have seven mandolins including: two fairly expensive Weber's (Gallatin and Yellowstone), a National RM-1 Resonator (Resophonic) mandolin, a Jonathan Mann 5-String (CGDAE) Electric Mando similar to what Tiny Moore played in Bob Wills' Texas Playboys Band, and a custom Gold Tone 12-String (FFCCGGDDAAEE). (I like to play fiddle tunes on my mandolins in multiple octaves). But I started with an "El Cheapo" plywood top mandolin that I still use today to learn new tunes, and to loan to family and friends who are wanting to learn the mandolin!! Good luck and best wishes for a lifetime of mainland picking!!

Don Julin has released a book crammed with exercises. "Mandolin Exercises for Dummies". A variant of this lesson is in the book - page 72. Plus it has audio tracks for the exercises. Worth the money!
