I remembered this vaguely from my childhood, which wasn't that long ago. I was born in 1993 and my parents used to sing this to me. It's quite nice to reconcile with this song as a piece of Scottish heritage about which I'd almost forgotten. I didn't know it was performed by the Trio and Paddie Bell either!

From Wikipedia. It was written by a former Galashiels weaver, Robert Coltart (1832 - 1880).[1] The song was an advertising jingle for the aniseed-flavoured confectionery that he manufactured in Melrose, and sold around the markets of the Border towns. The recipe is no longer known, but the song lived on. I sang this to my little daughters and now to my little granddaughters. May it continue down the generations

The blend of voices in this group are brilliant, I remember seeing them on t.v many years ago, loved them then & still one of my favourite folk sounds.

Always wonder if 'Ally Balli Bee' was a nickname for an Alistair or Alison Baillie Brown as Brown is those names were common in Gala then and now.

Don Mcvey Robert Coltert was a weaver in the Borders town of Galashiels, he made his candy as a sideline, to boost his earnings, sadly when Robert died, he took the recipe with him.
