From my personal experience as a doula, I’ve found that most times moms want a detailed birth plan focused around medical interventions. Setting & comfort are things we discuss and things I work with family on but the issue is medical providers doing things without consent or doing things without explaining the medical need. It would be helpful if hospitals just had a birth plan template that addressed the main true concerns most mothers have so that it’s something the staff is already familiar with without it seeming off-putting

It's really good to get a nurses point of view and opinion. I would have never thought about making 2 separate lists one for the hubby so he doesn't forget and one for the nurse and Midwife. Nice! Thank you.

One of the most important things on my birth plan is that I want everyone to speak in calm, quiet voices. I do not want a cheerleading squad hosting a pep rally or a motivational coach yelling inspiration at me! I want to stay calm and that means everyone else needs to be a strong, calm, reassuring force around me.

This whole video is a nice way of saying, "mama, read the books, do the research; THEN wright your preferences. AND tell everyone what their part in your plan is!"

My wife (who pulled this up for me as a reference) has 2 lists...one is for me she calls its a labor plan and the other is for the nurse its like you mentioned has her important information that may not be on her chart and her primary goals for delivery.

Glad you updated the video, makes a lot more sense that the nurses do not need comfort preferences. What about something like delayed cord clamping? I know that's a question for the dr or hospital but the impression is many staff do those type of practices automatically.

This is what I had in mind, too, about waiting a few minutes to at least five minutes before having the cord clipped after my child is born. I'm not pregnant, but I'm thinking about a lot of the factors and steps and the sort in case I do decide to have a baby. I'm learning so much, but I know that certain places do things differently and may not remember your requests until it's too late. Postponed cord clamping was one thing I wanted, and I also want my baby to be placed directly on my stomach or chest after she's wiped off. I don't want him or her to be washed off immediately or whisked away for weighing and all; I simply want him or her to rest against me for a while and allow them time to find my breast to feed on their own. It's something I took a liking to from the Global Health Media Project's Breastfeeding series.

Ask your hospital, mine actually just told me about it. They incurage it at a lot of hospitals now and if they don't they are usually cool with it because all or most of the fears people had about it have been dispelled, and if it's safe they tend to be okay with it....don't allow cord milking though....has been seen to cause brain bleeds in some cases.

Mandy Irby- Do you have any tips for laboring with continuous fetal monitoring? My doctor wants to keep a check on the baby, I'm gonna try to opt for intermediate but ultimately if it comes down to it I do want to make sure everything is going good. He said I could still move around, I'm just wondering how much I'll be able to do?
