I know that Mandy Moore is not a fan of her own early work, but she truly has no reason to be ashamed of this song. The late 90s/early 00s nostalgia present here that so many in the comment section look back on fondly proves that.

When this video came out in Fall 1999, I was 14 years old and just starting freshman year of high school. Now, I'm 32 and seeing this video/ hearing this song takes me back. It gives me the chills just thinking how great the 1990s were, especially the late 90s. This style will never come back, at least not in the same way, but I'm glad we have KZbin now to relive the memories over and over again.

Has me questioning what the point of it all even is... bust your ass so that one day you don't have to.. but by that time you're old and life's already over. I'll actually probably be able to retire by 45.. but still, pretty much ancient at that point. Where did all the time go... The years start coming and they don't stop coming.

lol, everyone thinks their era was the best. IMO the most likely scenario? childhood were the best years. nostalgia -- for a lot of people. i hear the same words from people older than us and a decade younger than us (we're in our 30s) -- "oh the 70s were the best" "the 80s were the simpler times" "oh the 2010s were the best" I think lot of it is when we had very little responsibility and not much to stress us out compared to when we're adults. all that being said -- love this song :D

Record companies stopped making this commercial Pop and R&B by 2010. They decided that they had "lost the war" against illegal digital streaming music. They shut down specialist divisions in Pop, Soul and R&B and Rap and Hip-Hop, in fact most styles of music except Country. This meant that new acts were not handled with unique teams of A&Rs, executives, songwriters, producers, stylists and media training and PR. They even stopped organizing tours and TV concerts to promote new talent on children's cable TV channels and weekend network TV. Now record companies sign acts only if they have their own established popularity from social media and some talent. They will then either be hands off with them or too hands on with their career.

Maloree it's because she says in her biography she saw the writing on the wall concerning the exploitive nature of the music industry and didn't want to be part of it! She also stated it was either this song "candy" or the recording of the entire album that allowed her to come to this epiphany or understanding that she was by nature fueling the teen depression rate as a result of the music industry's influence on young teens! She also went on to explain that after realizing this; she herself slipped into a bought of depression and that's why for years you never heard from her again!

@Karl M It's sad and that's definitely true. EDM can be cool, but I love just hearing real acoustic instruments and musicians. The music from some of the greatest bands are so good that you don't even need lyrics. As a songwriter myself, the sales are sadly coming from that trend and I'm trying to keep up with the trend, but put my own spin on it with some more musicality.
@AaronRaglandTV

@Karl M No way in the world I could forget the true Hip Hop in all of it's lyricism. I can't believe awards shows will call the mumble rap and other rap Hip Hop and categorize it as such. The Talib Kwelis, Commons, Busta Rhymes, Tribe Called Quests, and more kept it going in the 90s, but Hip Hop has been dead for some time. Everybody's flow sounds the same now and there's no originality across the board with rap and pop music

@Karl M 2013/2014 tbh - unless you don't like Nicki Minaj. I found her to be entertaining. After her I went *yawn* at hit songs. For me personally, peak music was late 90s/early 2000s. There's something classic about the pop bands that kept being cranked out like uh - candy XDDDD.

@Karl M I legit had to look up the definition of nu metal on the wiki XD (There are so many subgenres of metal I get them mixed up, as I've listened to various types). I agree with your statement wholly. Linkin Park's first album got me through junior high school hell (i feel the first two albums were nu metal before they went into another direction). Also Godsmack's song "Whatever" *chef's kiss* That is an A+ song.

+Yel Vall Lmao, I am your age right now as you was when this song was released! I love 80's, 90's and 00's music! Much better than the mainstream 10's music, even tho some less popular artists have great music in this decade, only you have to find them! :D

OMG, this song use to come in on the radio and the video on MTV and I'd listen to it for a bit then change it. How I now start to appreciate this great song. It's like a time capsule of emotions and memories and feelings. IF YOU WERE NOT A 90'S KID OR A EARLY 20'S KID LIKE ME YOU HAVE NO IDEA. IT WAS INCREDIBLE !!! WHAT PEOPLE ARE STRIVING TO DO POLITICALLY , SOCIALLY NOW WE HAD IT BACK THEN. MINUS THE SOCIAL MEDIA ( WHICH IS THE REASON FOR THIS CHAOS TODAY)

Hearing this song its like taking a never-ever again ride back in time to my wonderful, and at the same time regretable, 18 year old life. Lots of cool experiences, meeting great people, meeting evil people too, riding on cars with my boys and gorgeous girl friends... I just some times drift away almost fainting remembering...

For some reason, maybe the way the intro is filmed, I get that distinct pre 9/11 US feeling, like 1999 was the height of American peace, prosperity, and optimism. It makes me deeply miss that time period, even though I hated this song back then.

That's EXACTLY what I felt when it started. I thought, "Ahh, the pre-9/11 days." 1998/1999 was an awesome time style-wise. I just loved the whole Buffy dark lightness of it all. I don't know how to describe it. I think I'll call it pop-goth.

This song is so nostalgic for me. I grew up idolizing Mandy Moore. She is such a genuine role model for tweens who followed her music/acting/career in general since she came on the map. I’m 35 now and I still bawl my eyes out watching A Walk to Remember ❤️
