Record companies stopped making this commercial Pop and R&B by 2010. They decided that they had "lost the war" against illegal digital streaming music. They shut down specialist divisions in Pop, Soul and R&B and Rap and Hip-Hop, in fact most styles of music except Country. This meant that new acts were not handled with unique teams of A&Rs, executives, songwriters, producers, stylists and media training and PR. They even stopped organizing tours and TV concerts to promote new talent on children's cable TV channels and weekend network TV. Now record companies sign acts only if they have their own established popularity from social media and some talent. They will then either be hands off with them or too hands on with their career.

@Karl M It's sad and that's definitely true. EDM can be cool, but I love just hearing real acoustic instruments and musicians. The music from some of the greatest bands are so good that you don't even need lyrics. As a songwriter myself, the sales are sadly coming from that trend and I'm trying to keep up with the trend, but put my own spin on it with some more musicality.

@Karl M No way in the world I could forget the true Hip Hop in all of it's lyricism. I can't believe awards shows will call the mumble rap and other rap Hip Hop and categorize it as such. The Talib Kwelis, Commons, Busta Rhymes, Tribe Called Quests, and more kept it going in the 90s, but Hip Hop has been dead for some time. Everybody's flow sounds the same now and there's no originality across the board with rap and pop music
