I have a question. How long works the electric motor used to start the compressor? I mean, in steady state the shaft spin is selfsustainable as long as the combustions keeps ongoing, or if the electric motor stops, the entire system stops?
@MAN-Energy-Solutions5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tore, during the standard start-up procedure of the Gas Turbine (GT) the starter motor is engaged and the GT is ramped up to speed. After approximately 6 minutes the starter motor is disengaged as then the shaft spin is self-sustaining.
@shepherdwarriorKING6 жыл бұрын
The gas turbine consists of 2 sections the gas generator with high pressure turbine And the power/low pressure turbine Wich spins independently of the gas generator at a variable speed thanks to a second independent shaft. An external drive Wich is an electric motor starts the gas turbine and it drives the shaft of the high pressure turbine allong with the compressor mounted on this same shaft. The compressor driven by the high pressure turbine serves to take in the air needed for cumbustion, inside the 6 combustion Chambers the air is mixed with feul gas and this mixture is ignited. The hot exhaust gasses expand driving both the high and the low pressure turbine blades making them spin , the fast spinning turbine blades and shaft drives a generator wich converts the spinning energy to Electrical energy. The hot exhaust gasses then flow through the gas turbine defuser wich increases the gas pressure and ejects it via the outlet casingof the exhaust. The high temperature gas can still be utilized to generate steam when it comes out. Connected behind the turbine you will find the specialy designed boiler called a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) it's function is to capture the high temperature exhaust gas from the gas turbine and convert it to steam. Thanks to the captured exhaust gas The HRSG then generates steam where it is then delivered to a steam turbine where even more electricity will be produced. The main steam piping Wich are Huge bundles of pipes running out of the HRSG to the steam turbine, are the pipes that deliver high temperature and high pressure steam from the HRSG to the steam turbine. The steam turbine uses this steam from the main steam piping to spin the generator. Similar to the gas turbine high temperature and high pressure steam passes through the steam turbine turning the blades and the shaft Wich turns the second generator to make more electricity.

Loved the video, and the combustion chambers are ingenious! But I have a technical question: the main advantage of the gas turbine is the lower number of movable parts, which increases reliability when compared to piston engines, specially for high power output. My question is if it would be economic to make it smaller (for the 500/600HP range, use a centrifugal compressor (like the one of a turbo), injection of diesel on the combustion chamber. Conected to a generator and only the enough LiPo batteries for 30/45 min of work. Then, on the MAN truck, you would install one 150HP electric motor on each wheel (even making it available in kits to install on trailers, so that they could provide extra traction if needed), and an electronic system where it would be charging the batteries on descends, even disabling the turbine. Basicly, a hybrid truck, where the main innovation is an engine which would need very low maintenance, lighter, lower number of parts and increased reliability. The only question, which would need research, is if the turbine will use the thermal power of the fuel as efficiently as the regular combustion engine, and, most of all, if the power loss due to the conversion of fuel-electric energy/storage-engine is compensated by the fuel saving on the descends, by the virtual elimination of maintenance on brakes, by the security on having full traction (even possibly on the trailer). What do you think? I do have an idea for the new "diesel turbine"... If you're interested, let me know.
@kimmer67 жыл бұрын
Gas turbines are fuel hogs. They make sense where you need very high power to weight as in a helicopter. They work great where you need 24 Megawatts up and on line in 10 minutes for emergency utility peaking power. In a vehicle, gas turbines consume too much fuel. its not readily possible to recover their waste heat without having an exhaust fired boiler and condensing steam turbine both driving generators. Guess what? Many utilities shut down large steam plants and built the gas turbine/steam turbine powered combined cycle power plants. These have great fuel efficiency but they absolutely do not like variable loads or frequently changing loads. A combined cycle power plant would not work in a truck that is constantly changing speeds and loads.
@chazdaggett41947 жыл бұрын
I think he meant that the turbine would be powering an electric generator which would in turn be powering electric motors on all wheels allowing for better traction and eliminating the need for brakes. I do agree that it would take a lot of fuel, but I would like to point out that the M1 Abrams tank is powered by a gas turbine, so we shouldn't just disregard the idea. Perhaps a small enough turbine could be used with relative efficiency in a truck one day....
@mitchmorganmusic6 жыл бұрын
this is not a bad idea, although I think the electricity needed for future electric vehicles will be generated in industrial scale in various locations and transported to charging stations. generation would include generation turbines, solar, etc. the most efficient and cost effective obviously taking a larger role.

the leading edge of the compressor section blades need to face the direction of rotation. (slice into the air to push the air through the compressor). If you view from the inlet end the blades are pointing to the left and rotation is anti clockwise. The heated air at the turbine section is directed to push on the turbine blades to drive that rotation.
@oscargoldman854 жыл бұрын
@@Jb-tl1yi Oh wait - I see I think... The hot air(purple) is driving the Turbine, but the cool air is being drawn in at the back by the fans (like a turbo) OK that makes sense... thanks very much.... If those radial cans are the combustors, how are they fed with air? This video doesn't show that. Are those cans in fact fuel premixers, and the combustion chamber axial with the turbine?
@grinofthegrimreaper8 жыл бұрын
the compressor feeds them, if you look closely at around 1:57 you can see the purple stream (the air compressed by the compressor) being pushed through channels that feed the combustor through their top. Then the hot gases are sucked in by the turbine (which in turn is kept rotating by those very same gases). Follow the colors: blue --> purple --> red --> purple again.

Is there a way to add on another gas turbine with a gas that boils at even lower boiling point like propane or butane? How far can efficiency be pushed here?
@mitchmorganmusic6 жыл бұрын
boiling point from what i understand wont increase efficiency. propane for example boils at -44 degrees. in some parts of the world a vaporizer is needed to turn the liquid to a gas, requiring energy. what would make sense is gas with a higher calorific value such as butane. although more expensive therefore not necessarily more efficient. combustion efficiency also maxes out, creating perfect combustion is extremely hard to achieve. efficiency in my opinion will come from alternate routes of energy production.

lol yes it wouldnt make sense for the jet ones to be steam cooled, but i know the ge 7fa gas turbines are all air cooled and they are 175mw ish.
@judsonkr8 жыл бұрын
Compressed air is bled off of the compressor/gas generator and fed into the turbine for cooling. There is no water and no steam used in cooling one of these units. In some applications though, water IS fed into the compression process as well as into the combustion process. While this does result in coolng, the cooling is used to increase the density of the fuel-gas mixture thereby increasing the power output. So it IS cooled but NOT for the sake of systems protection with the exception of some flame-centering applications. Bleed air is still used to coole the turbine in these applications. In combined cycle applications, heat from the exhaust is used to generate steam. This steam is generally either used as process steam or generating steam. In a few applications some of this steam is even fed back into the combustor of the turbine as power augmentation. There are many, many applications for these machines. I barely touched on the possibilities here.

So, why are the combustion chambers off to the sides of the turbine instead of having the chamber be built linearly into the turbine itself? It would seem like such a setup would be better because the fuel would be ignited with the air itself resulting in a more balanced combustion and therefore a more efficient reaction, but please do correct me if I am wrong.

The most common programs for this kind of animation are cinema-4d, Maya, and Blender (there are more, but those are the 3 I am familiar with). If you want to give it a try: Blender is open Source and free. There are a lot of tutorials on youtube, but be aware a lot are for older versions, and sometimes it gets confusing, when your screen is different from the tutorial. Either you download a matching softwareversion to your tutorial (older versions are availabale) or you accept a littele bit of flatter learning curve and use the latest product.

The interior of combustion chamber is not corroded due to the continuous flame ? I mean as material is not being destroyed ?
@TheOz917 жыл бұрын
In gas turbine engines, the combustion chamber usually consists of a combustion liner, which sort of look like a cheese grater. The combustion happens inside the liner, while there is air moving outside of the liner, creating an insulating film of air. The holes in the liner allows for the air to swirl to mix the fuel and the air before combustion. The moving air also cools the liner itself, so the temperature of the actual material is safely below destruction. What the animation doesn't show is the purple part (compressed air) moving into the inner hot part of the combustion chamber. Makes sense, since combustion chamber design would be proprietary.
@jameslast43697 жыл бұрын
This answere discribes a conventional combustion liner. The flametube in this video is cooled by impingment cooling, which is not shown. Additionally there will be a thermal barrier coating.
@kimmer65 жыл бұрын
The material for combustion liners is Hastalloy X. It can take the heat. But the type of fuel used can cause hot gas path corrosion problems. Using natural gas has the least amount of hot corrosion. Distillate fuels are commonly used but crude oil can be burned but component life is drastically reduced.
