I spend more time on wash day than I realize I'm sure, it take an hr just to blow dry it on wash day, and I do all the steps in the shower you teach on top of that, this is why I hate my hair I'm as low maintenance as it gets and I'm almost ashamed to say by day 2 I have to put it up in something because it tangles so easy & as a mom of 2 I don't have alot of time to spend on it everyday, I can't brush it or really even touch it or it just becomes frizzy and the fallout by day 7 (or longer depending on how much time I have throughout the week) is awful It's to dry to wash more than once a wk... I pretty much feel like I have to straighten it on wash day if I wanna have nice looking manageable hair til wash day. if you have any tips I am all ears...because some days I'm tempted to shave it all off!

Just wanted to stop in and say Thank you! ♥️ I am 32 years old and have NEVER, not even for 1 day, worn my hair down curly. Since the 5th grade I have been straightening my hair almost every single day. No one ever taught me how to take care of my curly hair so I just tried to hide it. I came across one of your videos while scrolling through KZbin and decided since I didn’t have anything else to do that I would to spend my afternoon trying your tips. 1 week later and I have not only, not straightened my hair, but I have worn it down curly every single day!!! I am now in love with my curls and watching all of your videos to learn more :) Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

Trying to still fig this out but am excited bc my hair is getting better. If i wasnt depressed itd be way better but i have no support n come from a culture that calls curly hair, broken hair. Im excited 4 u n thank u 4 ur comment it makes me feel just a tad less alone knowing that there are ppl out there with similar habits n likes just maybe Im in a wrong location or i could just suck n be really a miserable person. @@randomness8819 you’re definitely not alone ❤️ My hair is also fine but I have a decent amount of it. I’ve noticed recently that my hair is even more fine than it was a few years ago and I’m wondering if all the years of straightening has caused it. Maybe Mel’s volume video would help cover the thinner spots? They also make a spray that you can put on the roots to cover up thinner spots and that may help you. My hair has never grown past my shoulders from all the breakage so I’m hoping I will be able to have much healthier hair by putting down the hair straightener. Curly hair is beautiful and I’ve always thought that…I just never thought it was beautiful on me. It’s very depressing being a women and not loving your hair so I can definitely relate to you. Sending you love and patience on your natural hair journey 😊

You tell it girl! It may seem like curly hair is a full time job, but it really isnt. The first day takes me the longest because I want it to last as long as possible which helps me to spend less time during the week. Watching you girls has saved me more time and boosted my self esteem. I have been able to realize the beauty of my curls that I always knew were there but never knew how to take care of. I've spent 30+ years straightening, blow drying, and flat ironing my hair twice a week took me about 2 hours per week to keep it straight. Now that I am learning how to do finger curls I spent 40 min once a week. I keep it in a pineapple to sleep and only have to touch it up in between washings. I am loving the curly girl method since it is much easier and less damaging plus I no longer have to worry about my hair getting messed up because of rain or humidity. Thank you for this channel, it has truly changed things for me!!

For those with thicker 3c hair, I preepoo 30 min, washing would be another 30 min, plus deep conditioning (can go from 10 to 30 min) depending on the treatment. Defining my hair is a good 40 min to an hr. (Fair to say I do have some color damage in my ends, but still). I wash my hair every 5/6 days. I use Argan oil in my hair every other day before I go to sleep. But I love wash day, while it is time consuming I feel it’s quite relaxing. Love your show.

Can you recommend a clarifying shampoo for thin 3a hair?
@nicolemiranda9231
@nicolemiranda9231 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly you have to be careful with the clarifying shampoos, as they can strip too much of the natural oils on your hair. So use something with rosemary oil or peppermint, or apple cider vinegar, even though they don’t say “clarifying” the components are to detox your hair. Always a good option to go for the Shea Moisture line (JBCO) with apple cider vinegar, the shampoo from mielle green line, and if you are in the USA Not your mothers black or green line shampoo. Yes, I go for the most cost effective products 😅. Good luck

Hello! I feel silly asking this but do you do all of that in the shower? Or do you add those products and then shower? Any advice you can give would be super appreciated!
@nicolemiranda9231

So what I found work best for me, I preepoo outside, shampoo and condition in the shower, and depending on the instructions I do my deep condition (DC) in or out of the shower. So if it is let say 5-10 min DC, the I just wait and rinse it out, and then shower. If the DC requires more than that, I will put it on, put a plastic cap, shower and get out and rinse it out when advise, out of the shower. I don’t go in the shower again, I do it in the bath sink cuz, no body got time for that. 😂 So the last thing is don’t let the DC be the last thing in your body. In my case, I don’t like the residue of the DC in the body, it leaves my skin itchy. Besides it’s not meant for the body. I hope this helps you

I have 3a hair that I used to straighten every day for over 10 years because all I knew was frizz. It was such a hassle because there was no easy way to sleep without having to redo it nearly every day. Had to wear braids just to get a break. Nowadays it's just one pretty extensive "wash" day a week but daily upkeep is easy. I spend way less time doing my hair overall than when I straightened AND I don't fear humidity or steam anymore. Totally bought some combs to sleep in for that root lift! Thanks for the tips!

Love the video Mel! I like the realistic view of what you actually do with you hair each week :) My questions is, if you have a looser hair pattern and workout almost daily, what can you do to elongate the time between washes? My hair does not do great with refreshing, my hair pattern loosens as the day goes on, whatever curls I refresh will look totally different that the rest of my hair. I don't need it to look perfect or uniform, but it looks like a mess after refreshing, so it's up in a bun day 2 and/or day 3. It's been trial and error for over a year now, but it's more error haha!
@theardentarcher
@theardentarcher 2 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem. My curl pattern is much like Mell’s, but thinner strands and about half the density. It’s very difficult to get it to look good on Day 3 as my hair doesn’t take well to refreshing. Adding more product on refresh day makes my hair look and feel awful. So I usually end up only going 3 days, 4 at the max, between washes. Which sucks because it takes so much time to style.
@amandasmeltzer20
@amandasmeltzer20 2 жыл бұрын
Mine is the same! I do workouts 5 times a week and it's so hard to keep it contained without killing the curl pattern, especially since my hair is a bit longer. Then it ends up in a bun until the next wash day. 😔 Anything you have found that works best!?

Same. I've found that using a more clarifying shampoo on washdays combined with a moisturizing conditioner helps and using very minimal products also. I use the Aveda Nutriplenish leave-in spray Mell uses here and a gel. That's it. I don't use a hair oil on the first day because I feel it just softens my waves/curls too much. If it feels too dry the next day, then I add oil! Also, you'll probably have to refresh your curls with a water spray bottle and some gel much more often than Mell does. If I do all this, I can make it to a week without washing! But I also put my hair up a lot, so...

Hi Mel I wash my hair once a week, but I have a very dry/eczema prone scalp and dry/course hair (2c/3a). I'm disabled (so I'm not really exercising) and as I live in Scotland it's only warm for a small portion of the year. I use clips, satin scrunchies, scarves and other hair accessories to keep refreshing to a minimum, but I do apply a bit of mist and oil some days if it's a bit dry looking on the ends. I have a t bar of high lift tint highlights to blend in the white threads I'm naturally producing at 50, but I'm a medium blonde base colour naturally. My scalp can get a little dry during the week, so I apply a hydrating scalp serum overnight when I need it. I think those with finer hair or an oilier scalp may struggle to wash once a week only, but it works fine for me. Best wishes.

My hair was struggling a little bit because I hadn't washed in a few days, and I had put perhaps a little too much protein in it to combat an afternoon in a salt water pool and a chlorine hot tub (without protection). My roots were pretty stretched out because I pretty much permanently wear my hair up. I too am somewhere in the 2b-3a range when styled curly. Anyway, it seems like she used way too much moisture, weighing my hair down, and then only used gel to style my hair. It looks very similar to how my hair looked before I started my curly journey over a year ago; mostly straight with some slight waves, barely 2a. I paid over $140 CAD to be worse off than when I arrived.

I never knew I was curly/wavy so I grew up thinking my hair was straight. And I promise I used to spend more time on my hair than I do now. And I don't have great curls like you do so I feel like I need more refreshing. AND, even when I don't do my curls (which means it lays straight once dry), since my hair is 100% healthier than it's ever been so it always looks better now than when I had "straight" hair!

I wash once or twice a week and only do a wet refresh if there’s a social event. I work in a hospital and have to wear my hair pulled back, so now that I feel like I’ve figured out what works best for my hair, I have majorly simplified things since I’m no longer experimenting I’m just living! Since I stopped fussing over it so much it looks even better…

And here I’m thinking of washing my hair (it’s been a week and 1 day) but I don’t find myself motivated to do it (as always). I wanted to go with a simple wash day to not take that much time but after watching this, I really don’t think I take that much time so LETS GOOO 😂 Thank you! As always, I love your videos and appreciate the hard work you and your sister put on this channel! ❤️

I have the unique perspective to directly compare. I was born with stick straight hair, it wouldn’t even hold a curl from an iron or roller, just straight as can be. But all of a sudden, assumingely due to health issues, my hair suddenly went curly a couple of years ago! So now I’m like a mix of 2 and 3 tighter waves with ringlets. My curl type is a hair looser than Amanda’s. And very fine and thin, I’m a low porosity unicorn you speak of. Completely untreated, not exposed to the elements. So by contrast I definitely spend more time now that it’s curly as far as styling obviously, but it completely changed my texture. Like before I couldn’t have gone more than a day and my hair would look greasy without washing, now I wash 1-2 x a week and not greasy at all. It was crazy to learn everything, the grass is always greener and I was always so jealous of curly girls growing up, then find that most didn’t like theirs as kids, it’s been crazy. But I understand the work that goes into it now, and while I miss sometimes just brushing it out of the shower, ponytail or bun done, it also took a lot of work to make it look decent. So in the end, it probably wasn’t much different in time if comparing actual styling. I wouldn’t trade curls for anything and I pray they never disappear like they came. I’d still love to understand what happened though! Now one thing that’s majorly different, I spend way more on products now and have to work harder to select the right products! Before with straight it was literally just shampoo!

My hair wouldn't hold a curl either, and, when I went through puberty I guess, it changed 🤷🏻‍♀️ now i couldn't get it to stay straight 🤣

@Medicated Mastermind I’ve heard it can happen during puberty and such but I was about 30, so nothing like that! No hormonal changes either. I’m in poor health, so that’s my best guess! I’d love to know the cause, but I just hope it never goes away.

I really liked this video, I'd love if this became an ongoing series. Mell, I have a question. I'm going to a waterpark next week and this will be the first time swimming since going curly. In as much detail as you can spare, please let me know if I need to wash my hair every night after swimming? And if yes are we talking regular shampoo or clarifying? Should I coat my hair in a little oil every time before getting in? And if I missed anything else, please let me know! Thank you so much ❤️

I've got to try timing my hair week. One thing I do now that takes time is brush my hair every other night. I get my hair oil out and brush each curl and then with a bit of hair oil on my fingers I give each curl a little love and re-twist it. Put it in the bonnet and looks great the next day with no refresh/no water. A lot of curly girls will say never dry brush but as a CG who has fine dry hair but lots of it I need to get my hair untangled every couple of days. Fairy knots and curl loss from dryness is taken care of. The one thing I still miss from my straightening days is the feeling of brushing my hair. I love that feeling of being fresh and neat that brushing gives. I thought maybe my curls would be brushed out but despite all the manipulation they spring back and with the light oil application they moisturize themselves inside my bonnet overnight. Try it, I didn't believe it but it works for curly, wavy, fine and dry.

Ok wavy 2b/2c girl, balayaged on natural blonde, medium porosity with some UV damage and halo frizz. My routine is as follows: day 1: dry detangle half and plait it, do same on other half, apply a couple of pumps of cleansing oil to scalp and massage in to dissolve build up from dry shampoo if necessary. Jump in shower, take hair ties out, get hair wet. Use a mix of a squirt of clarifying shampoo with a gentler shampoo, massage in and use scalp rubbing tool. Then rinse, apply toning conditioner mask for 5 mins while doing other shower things like bodywash, shaving, face wash etc. Get hair wet again and detangle, add hair food for extra slip if necessary, squish to condish with head tipped to side, add in cantu curl activator same way, plop in several microfibre turbans then air dry or apply heat protectant and diffuse. I use a silk pillowcase. Hair looks great until day 3 where I may dry detangle and have it in braids for a bit to settle frizz from brushing. On day 4 I add in some dry shampoo, by day 5 or 6 it is time for a wash. Once or twice per month I do an olaplex and deep conditioning treatment. Time per week on my hair is probably 3 hours as it is long and dense.

Honestly, when I used to wear my hair straight it'd take longer to manage than it took you accross the span of a week. Because I wasn't moisturing it enough, it'd take me 30 minutes at night each night just to detangle it. I'd need to wash it about 3 times as often, so that takes time too. Unless you have perfectly straight hair (that's thick too because thin hair needs washing super often), I think most people are spending a decent chunk of time on their hair.

Mel, I have very fine, loose curls (2a-3a) and spend almost a full style time on my hair every day to get it to bounce back. Spritzing (which takes forever to get it wet enough) then re-scrunching which often requires additional product, then diffusing. Any tips on how to shorten this time but still get good results?

I've been on my curly hair journey for 10 years and I feel like it's a full time job. That's why I live in a bun/pony. I can't get second day hair. I can count the number of good hair days I've had in that time on 1 hand. 🥴🙄 I can't refresh, wet or dry. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have a weak curl pattern. Easily disputed. On a great day I have juicy spirals. 99% it's stringy loose waves. My hair would never survive all the handling your hair does. I love your hair

I would say I probably spend about twice as much time on my hair and I am ok with it as it is a hobby for me experimenting. I have wavy hair and my refresh could be a bit more involved or my night time routine involves pinning some curls up to prevent a refresh in the morning, so I don't mind and prevents using too many days with water on my hair.

🔬 okay I might need to try that satin wrap technique. Maybe then my hair will last 😅 I don’t have naturally straight hair but when I did straighten it all the time I spent no time on my hair 💅 wash one day of the week and maybe if I needed it redo some parts. imo definitely easier than wavy/curly hair

I would say i spend 6 hours a week, because i have to wash my hair at least twice a week but 2 hours of that i have deep conditioner in my hair while i'm doing something else. When I was little i had straight hair a'd i would say it takes definitively less times since you need only a shampoo and a conditionner, no styling products so it dries quickly without having to blow dry. Ypu have to brush it everyday, but it's very quick because straight hair doesn't tangle much

You asked for a straight hair timeline? I have fine, flat, 2A hair that's naturally very porous, so poker straight in the dry winter, a nd frizzy and shapeless in the summer. I tried the Curly Girl method for a free years to see if there were any more curls hiding in there. There are not. However, curly methods are great for helping manage my porosity and frizz, so my routine is a custom mashup. I co-wash 2-3 times a week with a natural conditioner. I don't use any silicones (they do nothing for me), so this is plenty. 10 mins. Products (DIY flax gel all over and Andalou gel on the temple roots where I have a bad wave), 3 mins. Blow dry underlayer for volume, 15 mins. Air dry top layer, cast reduces frizz from my commute. Fight with my hair throughout the day as I live in SW Ontario and it is stupid humid here. Easily 30 mins a day, maybe more, in the summer. It collapses and tries to do the Bad Wave. (My natural wave is not flattering. Heads should not appear hourglass shaped.) The flax gel really helps, though. Brush out at night. 1 min. Roll the dice in the AM. With the flax gel, I can occasionally brush and go now, which is awesome. Love. 5 mins. Or, or could be a flat, misshapen mess and I'll need to wet down and re-blowdry. 20-30 mins each time. So, probably comparable time wise. You just did yours all at once, and got much better hair for longer. Mine is completely random. But I'll keep watching, and maybe steal more secrets and good hair days for myself.
