The original by Springsteen is street gritty, this is a dance party. Heard them both when they were released, i like them both for different reasons

"Revved Up Like A Deuce" is referencing a two door car, as in Little Deuce Coupe. Lingo of the times

Haven't heard this tune in a long while. Thank you, it's a good one. I remember it being one of the best tunes played on AM radio. Sometimes AM was all we had. The only problem was that the AM played a short version. Long versions would take away from commercial time. *Sigh* Lol. Yup, that's the way it was sometimes.

This song always reminds me of the movie “Blow” (with Johnny Depp) even though I knew it already before then, I just watched the heck outta that movie back in the day. 😂 I also remember asking my dad what is he singing in that one part? He assured me it’s “duce” 🤣 Such a great song! With a bunch more memories but I’ll leave it to that for now. I can only imagine folks who were around when this first came out have their own amazing recollections related to this one!

One of those times a band takes someone else's song and makes it their own.

Oh man! Taking me down memory lane. Twice! Original version came out in the early 70s. The way Springsteen spun those lyrics reminded me of Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues (classic video, btw). And then Manfred Mann's version became a big hit later in the 70s. Great cover that took it up a notch musically. My favorite part is the "Chopsticks" piano solo. 🤣

The original was on Springsteen's first album Greetings from Asbury Park. That album has some good songs, including Spirit in the Night, also covered by Manfed Mann's Earth Band.

Manfred Mann, South African born who grew up in England and was the creator of the British Invasion band who made their name with Do Wah Diddy Diddy (#1 in 64) and then songs like The Mighty Quinn (#10 in 68) and this one #1 in 76. He and his group had 18 charted singles from 64-84 with his keyboards at the center of all of it. Great choice.

This is the album version. It has the same effect on me Sifa, I have to move! I was 17 when this came out and the memories are all good. "revved up like a deuce" 32 Deuce coupe - car. Bruce's version is horrible. MM own this forever.

The E Streeters opened for MMEB early in their career, eventually Manfred opened for Bruce. I don't know how Bruce allowed the use of his songs, but good thing they did, cause this cover is definitely in the top 100 of the R+R era. Spirits in the Night and I came for You aren't as unique as far as arrangements go, but that's life.

I prefer the Springsteen version that has more vocals, and you can see it is very double-entendre heavy. Springsteen wrote the song and the MFM Earth Band version is lyric light and more poppy.

I never got on the Springsteen train. Like Dylan and a dude named John Hiatt, songs they write are always better when covered by others. Back up vocals on this by drummer Chris Slade who had hair back then, lol. Most know him as the crazy good bald headed drummer with The Firm, David Gilmours solo band in 84 and mostly as Phil Rudds replacement twice in ACDC. All these old 70s Manfred Mann albums take me back to hooking school to go play Frisbee and smoke big joints of seedy Columbian weed. Ah, to be young (and fucking skinny) again, lol. Deuce is a type of car. The Deuce Coupe was also mentioned in a Beach Boys song as well. We all know what and who douches are lol.

liked this track ever since it was released. I find Springsteen like Dylan. His songs are piss poor until someone else takes it and changes it from mundane to good with a bit of creativity. Love Hamlet Thompson's vocals on this. I remember when released, it got put on the juke box at my local pub. Spent many a pound on it. TBH though, I used to play the B side, Starbird, A> because I loved it and B. It caused the middle/old aged patrons to moan and complain to the landlord (unlike me to try and get under someone's skin 😜) I did hear in the Trump types bible bashing south, they wanted to ban this version because the were to stupid to understand the lyrics. Saw them a couple of times around this period and they were really good. The controversity was "Douche", changed from Boring Bruce's version. He didn't like it 😂 Good pick David.

OMG it's the Curly Whirly Anus song - lol. "Little Early Pearly gave my anus curly whirly". But seriously, love this song, also love Spirits in the Night (another Bruce cover by MM'sEB). Heard the MM'sEB versions long before the original Bruce versions and I prefer them. Never was a Bruce fan: "Fire the Boss!!".

back here from germany with my two fav reactors! This are the seventies, and the MMEB does it in a most perfect way anytime, from their first album to - maybe - angel fire. I love all of them with Mick Rogers, such a great singer and guitar player he is! Chris Thompson is a really good add to the band, but - sorry - he is not Mick! I love also the way they do the springsteen and the dylan stuff.
