IRL same, in mangas especially these dub one-shots stories - its a plague. Mixed with doormat pushovers. And of course they always are a "nice guy" and win the best girl in the story. Full blown wish-fulfilment stories - sometimes hard to watch cause of this.

It's already great that he didn't run away when they told him what punishment he had to do. It was a clear situation where the protagonist must have thought that they would make fun of him in some way, making him recall old bad memories and making him think they were making fun of him again. The girl continued to tell him things that would embarrass him. She could easily say "normal" things to him and then ask him if he wanted to go somewhere else. They opted for shock therapy which is often not the right solution in these cases. The girl also took a big risk by revealing their past to others. She trusted too much in the goodness of others. What would have happened if there had been someone wrong in the middle? Or if they had changed the person who had to give orders to the protagonist, forcing him to do really "funny" things? Would she step in and stop them? Given the protagonist's past, he reacted too normally to the whole issue during the party.
