I remember when Otomen came out and they made a JDrama live action series. I was going to get the manga but thought I would watch the series first to see if I liked it. But even though the actors were great and there were some comedic moments with side characters (BL-esque comedy moments) I just couldn't get past all of the issues you highlighted. So, I unhauled the volumes I had without reading them, too.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that unhauled Otomen for the reasons I mentioned.

Maeve i felt the EXACT same about Devil and Her Love Song. Thanks sm for speaking ur mind abt the series. I also wanted to love it so bad bc I’m a sucker for beautiful art - but ended up heartbroken as I had to unhaul it as soon as I finished binge reading it 💔 Sad it couldn’t stay in my collection but glad I tried

@@hwinxdiary Agreed!! I’ve been so disappointed with some BEAUTIFUL manga. And I’m just not going to keep manga just because I love the art. There’s too much manga in the world and I have limited space. 😅

A Devil and her Love Song feels so nostalgic, I read some of it when I was a teen, the story was memorable but I dropped it as some point back then 🙃

I remember reading scans of the series online years ago and liking it. It just wasn’t for me after my re-read. 😅

Great wrap up and unhaul! It would be hard to let go of something with such beautiful art but hopefully shelf space can go to something that is beautiful and a gripping story.

I love Black Butler but for some reason haven’t finished collecting it. So maybe that’s a sign lol 😂 at first I thought you were holding up X/1999 and I was about to have a min heart attack haha the first series you showed sounds wild 😱 Art isn’t that important to me. It’s more of a plus. I am big into characters and character development. Great Unhaul! Wish I had your willpower

I think my unhaul willpower has gotten stronger over the last couple years. lol. I’ve gotten rid of so many gorgeous series that I just didn’t love. Also, X/1999 isn’t going anywhere!!

A series that comes to mind for me is "Ran and the grey world" (7 volumes). Absolutely STUNNING art, but there are so many elements of the story that I just can't deal with. Thankfully the arthur has a new titel out now ("Go with clouds north by northwest") where the story is much better IMO and I'm collecting that one instead.

I haven’t read Ran in the Grey World but, I have Go with the Clouds North by NorthWest and I love the story and art in that one!! 💕

@@maeve_ever_manga "Go with clouds..." is so much fun to read for me as a Scandinavian, Iceland feels so familiar to me. And I adore the quirky characters and their bonds. :D CONTAINS SPOILERS: RATGW has the same type of quirky characters, but I personally would say that they are more stereotypical. And the plot is all over the place which affects the pacing. And I was really not a fan of the "werwolf-in-heat-choose-YOU-because-you-good-mate" sub plot. And the 16 year old girl only dream being that she wants his babies added to the ick. BUT the bigger ick was 100% the fact that the main "love interest" for our heroine Ran is in his 30s while believing that she is a clueless high-schooler. But the ick winner is how the same man confesses his love for ran even after finding out that she is actually ONLY 10! *hiss! What frustrates me is that all of these issues could have been solved with better writing, but as it is, even the stunning art can't save this one for me personally. (TT-TT)

Watched, liked, and commented! I love your thoughts on unhauling! You totally need to make it your channel tagline: Shelf space is too limited to keep manga you don't love! Generally speaking, I think story is more important than art. I call this "The Crow Effect". It's referring to the American comic The Crow. It has terrible art, but the story is very engaging to me. That said, sometimes art is so awful that I don't even want to try the story. Anything by Taiyō Matsumoto falls under this category.

I SHOULD make that my tagline!! I struggle reading manga with terrible art(or any form of comic) but, there are some out there that the story is just too good to not read!

I’m a sucker for beautiful art too! But I totally agree, if the story isn’t doing it for me, I gotta let it go. I think I remember something about a Black Butler art book coming out…. I might be wrong.

I'm very interested in The Dragon King's Imperial Wrath. It is giving Sacrificial Princess a little. However, it could have benefited by being a more extended series. You put into words better than I could about why I couldn't get back into Otomen.

I definitely agree that I probably would’ve liked The Dragon King’s Imperial Wrath if it was longer. Yeah, Otomen has so much potential but, I feel like they just didn’t hit the mark.

Story is the most important to me, but some art can deter me away from reading it such as Fruits Basket. I only keep manga where I love both the art and story because I only have one bookcase.

I think that’s an excellent!! I’m trying to go through a bunch of my series that I know I loved the art but, I don’t remember if I loved the story and as you can see, a lot of volumes are leaving my collection. I do have more than one shelf but, I don’t want to keep things that I don’t absolutely love even if I have the space.

Maria deserves the world 😭😭😭 I’m glad I dropped it when I did because WOW! This sounds like an emotional series! I think what you said about Otomen was spot on! Also I was so frustrated with his mom and how she thought/acted! 😠 I would LIKE to think that art doesn’t purely sell me on keeping series, but I’m not fully sure! 😆 I’m more prone to keeping series by mangaka I really like even if I don’t love X series. Does that make sense? Really enjoyed watching this!

That makes complete sense!!! I used to have the hardest time letting go of anything by CLAMP because they’re some of my absolute favorites!! But, I have let go of some.
