This episode reminds me of an incident I had when I was young. My childhood friend asked me out when we were in 10th grade. She was this drop-dead gorgeous French-Irish girl with waist-length strawberry blonde hair, green eyes, and an absolutely stellar figure. The whole situation seemed unreal to me at the time, because even though we were close friends and even though I had a massive crush on her, I never for a moment imagined that she would fall in love with me. After all, tons of guys wanted to date her, including the stereotypical "Captains of [insert sports team here]". I was (and still am) a relatively short, skinny black guy who would be at home on the cover of a magazine... if that magazine was titled "Computer Nerds Monthly". We had an initially cool start to our romance due to me being intensely nervous around her; I was afraid of offending her and having the whole thing crash down around me. She... "corrected" my outlook after a couple of weeks, and we got on like wildfire after that. I asked her why she would choose me when there were so many better looking guys, some of who were from rich families, who wanted to date her. She got SO OFFENDED by the question; it was perhaps the only time in my life I've ever really seen her angry, as she is typically very calm, rational, and even-keeled. She asked if I thought of her as being so shallow that she would base her choice of boyfriend on looks and money instead of choosing someone who treats her with kindness and respect. All I could say in return was an apology. It's a reminder that not everyone is built the same. Some people want hot, rich romantic partners, and if they can find them... well, good on them. Most people have more balanced desires. Yes, there needs to be some level of physical attraction in most cases (but not all), but personality, intelligence, motivation, and other aspects of a holistic human being are important too. So even if you would share a spot on the cover of "Computer Nerds Monthly" with me, don't count yourself out in romance.

I know the event in question has long passed but I want to add this for those who are about to or may eventually be in this scenario. It's good to set the boundaries and rules beforehand, but also be sure you want to go to the social event too. I also was in a similar situation, but the person I was to pair with was not a pleasant person and I clearly told my friend that I did not want to go and laid the important facts out. My friend paired this person with another friend of hers and I later found out there was a mild sexual assault with the person being arrested. Yeah, I dodged the proverbial bullet that night. (I say mild because the person kept trying to kiss after being told no repeatedly.)
