I’m convinced that the controller discourse is just a result of top players becoming extremely spoiled with good controller access. I have been playing for almost 5 years and have went through only two controllers. Most players in my region don’t have time or money to keep buying new controllers as well and I almost never hear complaints from any of them. Also if anything should be banned it’s notches. They are straight up cheating imo.

On the subject of other fighting games and controllers, Tekken Pro player Dimeback actually uses stick for one of his characters, and has changed to a pad midset for another. Tokido was also previously using Hitbox only for Urien and stick for Akuma

I thought about this randomly with the controller issue in regards to Melee vs Street Fighter and the main difference, I think, is the movement of the game. Street Fighter you have 8 directions and the box can do that fine, but it also has the benefit of things like making charge moves much easier to pull off because you can do opposite inputs at the same time (from what I've gathered, I've never touched a stick/box in my life). It has a clear advantage with no real downside, even with the "1 button, 1 input" minimum. Melee is a much more fluid game and Hax has talked so much about the downsides of the Boxx, I feel like it's less of a "this controller is just better" case than in something like SF. Fox players can use notches and somehow that isn't considered cheating, which I guess is built into the Boxx, but controllers have the advantage of also having full motion so it's kind of like the SF charge advantage. Controller for grapplers? Maybe a small advantage, but I've seen a Hugo player do a red parry into 720 on stick so... I don't think that's a big deal. I get why the controller mods a thing, in theory, but I really just hate them all because it feels so ridiculous to me. Scar said he paid $500 for a controller? Screw that. The Boxx is fine as an equalizer. I just woke up, so I'm sure I was just rambling, but I hope my point is understood and maybe added something to the discussion.

digital controllers for SF are required to do "input cleaning" which basically just means if you input opposing cardinal directions at the same time, it HAS to send a neutral input. thats the official rules. with proper input cleaning there's not a major advantage (aside from the fact that theres no travel time from the lever, but thats still possible on pad)

a lot of very good street fighter players view pads as of a similar tier to hitbox for fighting games. there is some debate on specifics the advantages of each, but having having the ability to do counter directional inputs concurrently is really what's driving a lot players to swap from arcade stick; something a pad can do with combination of the dpad and analog stick. Discreet inputs are also considered an really nice advantage when what direction you are holding is so integral to basic defense. lots of other small things, like some types of motions being easier on a stick versus a hitbox and vice versa, but ill spare you. big fan of gaming on whats comfortable and fun personally, thanks for the episode

On the topic of box advantages, you only think of it as an advantage because you're using the GCC as a standard. Nothing about the game is being modded or changed, everything a box does, a GCC can do (see Wizzy). It's like tennis transitioning to metal rackets from wood rackets. It's better for the game and players in both the short run and long run. GCC's should absolutely not be the standard that all other controllers are judged. They are actually so bad both ergonomically and structurally. If top players expect *everybody* in the community that wants to play competitively to pay $300+ for a controller that will inevitably break within a few years just to play at that competitive level, then that discourse is out of touch at best and ignorant at worst. Even to play "casual" Melee, you need to be able to do simple things like dashdancing, L-cancelling, shield dropping, ALL of which break down GCC's super easily and lead to snapback, faulty springs/levers, variable deadzones respectively, if they aren't already there. I cannot play Melee anymore because my controllers have all the issues listed, and it's unreasonably expensive to find another OEM controller let alone a modded/repaired one; I am literally being gatekept from Melee by my controller and I don't even enter tournaments. If this community wants Melee to last forever, then make your controllers last forever or accept new controllers. Disclaimer: Don't own a box, too broke.

Be mad if you want. Box is unfair. The fact that you can be pressing multiple directions at the same time, which is literally impossible on controller, should be enough evidence. If there is no absolute standard for play, there will be an advantage one way or another. You can say it's a skill issue, but it truly is not fair to have access to inputs that others do not. Please argue me, justify your purchase.

Do you mean multiple directions to achieve specific control stick angles? Or opposing directions? Because the SOCD nerf prevents that and can result in a lot of weird mistakes as a result (commonly a no-angle Firefox recovery, lol). But I think it’s fair to ask for travel time nerfs and that sort of thing. Just wanted to put it out there that you can’t *actually* press left and right or up and down simultaneously. One cancels out the other and if done improperly you’ll get no input as a result.
