Even if Mangs really was a D- level competitive player he's still leagues better than me, and probably 95% of the players watching. I recently started re-playing DoR and found I'm making more favorable trades, and being more aware of things like baiting the AI that I hadn't done in the past. I've also stopped turtling as hard and been more willing to let units die if it's advantageous. Just by watching these videos I feel like I'm objectively a better player. Are there better players than Mangs? Probably, but the difference between Mangs and those players is irrelevant compared to how far beyond me Mangs is. These videos are super helpful, keep it up Mangs! Thank you for all you've done!

Yeah, though, to be fair, rushing the HQ on that map is a noob move. If the enemy plays their opening "correctly" they will have the middle of the map scouted with their first infantry moving into the mountains north of the HQ, after the first cap. Mangs only had the opportunity to win because Stess made a mistake by moving that infantry to the west instead.

@@KopperNeoman Yeah. In terms of Yomi, the "normal" decision is up to who has the advantage after the failed hq cap. Ignoring CO powers(which favor Lash in this case), the infantry capping hq has 40% defense first turn, and if only a single infantry tries to clear the hq, the result is 7 hp infantry vs 7 hp infantry(normal luck doesn't change either number). A 7 hp infantry cannot deal the required 5 damage to stop the cap. Going for the hq cap requires more than a single infantry in response. It should be the dominant strategy on this map. At worst it forces your opponent to build a recon or tank and sent that and an infantry to hq.

The extra infantry and the captured city is because both players start with three bases instead of two. Mathematically, the way to get rid of first turn advantage is to give player two half of the advantage that player one gets by going first. So with two bases, that's 2000g spent on infantry turn 1, so player 2 gets a 1000g infantry to even things out. With three starting bases, one infantry is 1000g and two infantry is 2000g in terms of units deployed, so two infantry would be too much but one would be too few. The captured property gives an extra 2000g over two turns, but doesn't put that 2000g on the map for free so it's closer to even. It's not exactly 50%, but it's as close as you can get.

I think of ot as effective. If the HQ is exposed you should evaluate the likelyhood of the enemy capturing it and in this case, it was possible early on. If Mangs would have just pulled through, the match would have ended very quick.

I think if you're up against a non close friend guy for a single or maybe 2 matches it's a no-brainer not to go for that HQ that early. If it works, then he'll say: "Okay, that was kinda dumb from me, but also incredibly lucky from you that it worked in that exact moment." And you can either just take the win or go for the revanche. Either way that win will feel relatively hollow for how quick it happened. And if it doesn't work, then you'll feel stupid yourself while also setting yourself up for a disadvantage in a possibly long and painful battle. Now if you play best of 5 or go for it for the laughs, then it's a solid strategy either way.

I really like analyzing simple mistakes in the first few turns. (the time before the players have any contact, specifically) Plays made during that time are easy to judge as "correct" or "subpar" because the game is very simple at that point. Against a good player, going for the HQ cap, or the city Mangs actually took are both bad plays. If Stess had played the opening "correctly," he would've moved his infantry into the mountains north of the HQ after his first cap. The intel given from that position is superior to the spot he moved to, and it also defends against the HQ-rush cheese, defends the city that Mangs actually took, and it still puts him in position to cap the city Stess capp'ed next turn, if cheese isn't happening. With Sonya's vision boost it scouts... well, the entire middle of the map, (notably, the city right by the HQ, and the two cities northwest of there) and even with a different CO, it scouts enough of the middle to where you can narrow down where your opponent will be.

Even with that infantry in the right spot to see Mangs coming, the HQ provides +40% defense (and +40% damage for Lash's units). Sonya would have to dedicate multiple infantry just to get the one off the HQ, and take a fair amount of damage doing it.

@@TheFinalChapters The Sonja in this matchup has to counter with 2 infantry and a vehicle. (tank or recon) The first infantry will be heavily damaged, and the 2nd one will be undamaged. Instead, if the lash pauses the cap to fully kill the first infantry, then the Sonja only needs the vehicle and the first infantry. At first glance, that sounds bad, but we do have to remember all the cap'ing that the Lash has missed out on. Losing your first infantry without getting a single cap is a huge tempo loss. That tempo loss puts you on the backfoot for the entire match. Caps that would've been uncontestable will now be threatened by interrupts.

Well to be fair I do love mangs content and even forgife him his darkest hour. It's just important that you have to read into the guides provided by the community as else you just will get crushed in the current meta. On most maps macs are very bad as example. Or starting with a recon also often ends up as a pitfall. Bc are quite easy to counter. So you often want to skip the early coppter. But most of all you have to learn to hold back. This is the point i most struggle with:)

I think something that is very interesting about these Advance Wars videos is that Mangs’ opinions on the game clash with the general consensus in the AWBW community, like with his opinions on Kindle. With the in mind, it is really interesting to see how much Mangs values recons, whereas I’ve basically been told they are quite weak and should be spawned very cautiously because they can be stamped out with a tank, and infantry can do their job for cheaper. I generally think this is true, but I cannot deny that there was some interesting and overall good recon play this match.

I know the importance of vision but I tend to think Recons aren’t worth building early on. They only beat Infantry. And can potentially beat Indirects and Mechs via First Strike. Any Infantry on a mountain is essentially the same vision-wise. It’s more important to save up funds to build more powerful units early. If the map had very few or no mountains, I could see early Recons being worth it.

Most of his math intuition was wrong, the results were mostly average. Probably result of many different damage charts between games, each game has slight differences. Just advance wars has 5 different game versions.

i think the early Recon is like a normal worker scout in Starcraft. Not every player does it every time, but it's a solid play if you dont have a specific attack plan or you like to play reactive. In both cases the unit can cause a lot of trouble in the early game, but is primarily for gathering information.

Regarding the extra city to counter first-turn advantage: The rationale is that player 2 needs half a turn of advantage in order to balance out the game. What "half a turn" means depends on the map though. When both players start with 2 bases, 1 infantry is obviously worth half a turn. When you start out with 3 bases like in this map, 1 infantry doesn't quite cut it as a half-turn, so a neutral city is added to add a minor funds bonus to player 2. This captured city is then kept for 2 turn = 2.000 funds, which means it's half player 1's first turn (3 bases + HQ = 4.000 funds)

The map design standard is to give P2 one infantry unit for every 2 pre-owned bases, but since this map has 3 starting bases, the map maker probably felt like 1 infantry was too little and 2 were too much. It would be interesting to see the winrates on this map.

The potential for a turn 5 win via HQ cap kinda validates it for me. Player 2 is forced to move at least one unit by their HQ very early in case Player 1 goes for it, and it'll likely cost Player 2 some health off of an infantry or two in addition to their participation in the capture game. Player 1 kinda has to do the same thing, but will win if both players go for the enemy HQ and don't defend their own. Forcing Player 1 to cap that city immediately and giving Player 2 a couple extra thousand funds helps balance that a bit.

I still think that was a good move in that circumstance, Lash infantry on a HQ are dangerous, and even if they could mount it the response would be more costly to the enemy than to you... and if they couldn't you win the game... It wouldn't be worth it with other COs imo, but with Lash's 40% extra attack, and especially against unlucky sonja the gambles were a very early recon which would be too early to be useful any other scenario, and therefore give them a deficit in the capture game so not that much of a loss, or there's already an infantry on the HQ which would be a very questionable move... For a small chance to win the game, and a good chance to cause unfavourable matchups and draw two infantry away from capturing... But hey, Mangs likes to have fun.

Prime Tactics - of all the powers that "just" increase unit combat power, it is the one least affected by Counter Break. Because it doubles the terrain stars it grants you a lot of defense. Defense that will blunt the impact of 1st strike from Counter Break. While also granting the same amount to offense. Something that deals direct damage would of course be more effective, but this combination of defense and offense is a close 2nd.

By then you probably catch more cities than the guy who rush to HQ, offer a draw and dont make a move, the game will understand you have more properties and let you win if the opponent dont accept the draw, I know because I have been the guy that rush to HQ - _-

5:59, the extra property reminds me of playing Uniwar. The similar rationale the mapmaker has is that the 2nd player gets extra income to help offset 1st player advantage. In Uniwar however, the 1st player doesn't get his/her income on his/her 1st turn, instead, both players have initial income so that the 1st player can still have that 1st turn initiative

Playing as lash def teaches good habits, you dont want to be on roads, and want to position everything in highest defense locations. It just works for every co in the game. She's prob one of my fav cos except in dual strike where she only has 5% extra firepower per star. Though as everyone you want to be on highest defense as possible using roads only to get to better location if possible.

Definitely. Lash is one of my favorite COs. Like, Terrain Tactics just makes sense to me. My other favorite is Eagle due to his ability to move his units again. Funny enough, I never liked Colin despite the fact that he's OP.

@@stevengu1253 Both Lash and Kindle really want to put stuff on cities, com towers and all, but whenever Kindle uses her power any unit Lash had left on a city, base, airport, HQ, or port gets hit for 4HP (or was it 3?). Kindle prevents Lash from using her full potential, and she's often considered a noob's worst nightmare because of how she punishes the usually good strategy of using cities for their defense.

I would say moving lash's infantry to cap hq on turn 4 is not only not cheese but objectively the optimal play, since she gets 4 terrain stars on hq which translates to +40/40 stats for the infantry. If the opponent decides to interrupt the cap with an infantry they will likely take more damage attacking than lash's infantry defending. Still from a content creating perspective I respect Mangs for not going for that move, but if it were me I would go for the hq cap without question.

Honestly, the potential for the turn 4 cap is just too good for player 1. P2 HAS to build and position something within range by turn 3. Depending on P1's CO (Lash, Sensei, Kanbei, SAMI), it may take more than a single infantry. When that's the case, taking two infantry out of the capture game that early on AND taking a point or two off of both of those infantry seems like a really solid use of a single infantry. The worst part is that because P1's infantry comes from the forest, there's no real way for P2 to truly punish it or know whether they've committed unless they build a recon day 1 or something stupid like that. So P2 is kind of forced to at least position their units to be ready. I think this extra element of FPA definitely warrants the extra city for P2 at the start.

@@MOORE4U2 Kindle has 140/140 on the HQ as well, so add her to that list. Sturm as well with his extra defense will make it much harder to dislodge, though it won't inflict as much counterattack damage.

I maybe think this is why ppl 2 is handed more bonuses then normal, 1 free infintry and an extra city. Esp since some ppl might go for the day 4 cap and mighta picked a co boosting infinitry. If they lose day 4 thats on them

@@danmiy12 As I said in another comment, the extra city is because it's a 3 starting base map. P2 needs to get half of the value advantage P1 has by going first to even things out. On a two base map that's one infantry (0.5 * 2000) and on a three base map that's one infantry and a city because you can't get exactly 1500 worth of units in FTA counter (half of 3000).

If the opponent plays the opening properly, they will have your infantry scouted, and will just kill your capper. The only reason why Mangs got away with capping the city next to the HQ was because Stess mispositioned his first infantry. (the ideal play is to cap the city, then move to the mountain north of the HQ) While the HQ cap seems tempting, it's actually a loss, overall, because your opponent *will* have either a tank or a recon to clear it, and sacing an infantry early game puts you behind on the econ game. You've heavily damaged one of your opponent's infantry, sure, but that infantry already capp'ed a property, and you've completely lost 1 infantry that didn't cap anything. You generally don't want to make plays that rely on the opponent misplaying to work. It'd be like playing starcraft and just mindlessly zerg rushing every game without scouting. Sure, it will win you some games, but generally only ones against bad players that you should win anyway. And since you're just mindlessly zerging, you're not learning the how to actually play.

Mangs will naturally be worse in AWBW compared to his skill in the vanilla games. AWBW prioritizes maps with specific building count (3 bases for each side, maybe 1-2 airports for each side, 1 comm tower for each side) and many COs are different, not to mention labs and unit bans. But still, if Mangs keeps playing on this website he will get incredibly good in AWBW

This is the exact reason I believe that CO tiers are only useful as a guideline, as some maps heavily favor certain COs over others. Kindle can be a damn goddess on some maps because a lot of the "S-Tier" maps have an obnoxious number of properties.

@@rhettorical I think Kindle climbs up a tier on those maps with lots of properties (which give like 25k income for both sides in an equal middlegame). It will still be hard for her to go toe to toe against Max or one of these COs with strong passive boosts like Hawke or Von Bolt. Having to keep trading against stronger units on day-to-day just suck.

On a side note about the balance of coin+card in hearthstone, it really depends on the matchup but if tempo is the key of the match, not even that is enough to balance the advantage of going first (the gap in winrate first/second for aggro decks is a good testament of that) What I'm getting at is that I don't know if that extra city in AW is indeed too much or not but you should never underestimate the impact of going first in a turn-based game

It probably isn't too much considering how Mangs had the ability to cap the HQ uncontested in the early game. That kind of advantage can usually bleed into other parts of the game if used correctly.

Why do maps always have a com tower? Is the game more fun/balanced when each person has a com tower? Last time I saw this the com towers were contestable in the center of the map so i figured it was a way to close a game out (by taking their com tower)

Its simply something to fight over. Without those com towers players have little incentive to take the flanks and every unit would just mass in the center. Forcing the players to defend their com towers leads to more dynamic gameplay.

They don't always, but it's one of those things the map mods have a fetish for. The other responses are correct in the practical sense though (you could use other properties to incentivize flanks but COM towers are easier to plop & forget).

Aside from providing something for players to fight over, it also makes it harder to turtle. The more damage you deal with the first strike, the easier it is to break through enemy lines.

About the tank attacking the recon at 17:33... Tank does 85% to a recon, which becomes 60% due to city defense. So that's always 6 damage exactly with most COs but Sonja has equal good and bad luck so it's like a coin toss for her whether she does 5 or 6.

Mangs' stance on repairs reminds me a lot of life gain in MtG: Good when added to an already good card, see Siege Rhino or Lightning Helix, but bad when you sacrifice card advantage for it, see Healing Salve.

I'm just spitballing here, but the extra captured property near player 1's bases also affects the early centre rush. The funds it gives the opponent heavily incentivises leaving one infantry there to capture it at game's start. This reduces the manpower player 1 can send to the conflicted centre of the map at game's start, creating more of a tug-of-war between turn advantage and available numbers. It probably shows more if there's something really nice in the middle - say, if everyone has 2 bases and there's both a comm tower each in the middle, now player 1 has to leave an infantry behind to get the enemy city, and make the same city-or-comm-tower player 2 has to make with their free unit.

It's almost never worthwhile to rush the center without having units capture nearby properties first. You'll delay your income engine and any good player will simply take back the cities that you overextended for. That being said, you don't want to ignore the center either... but if there's properties on the way to it (especially 3 spaces), you're better served capping those ASAP.

I feel a HQ rush against e.g. lash or sami (ignoring sensei as he is usually banned) is a big risk on this map, or is there something im missing? you can get to the enemy HQ by turn 3 and hide in the forest on turn 2, resulting in the enemy most definitely not seeing you. if They play defensively they lose, no?

Surprised AWBW Sonja doesn't get the ability to negate terrain stars like in Dual Strikes, like have a d2d of negating 1 terrain star, 2 terrain stars when CO Power is active and 3 terrains stars when CO Super Power is active.

Mangs, when you have an easy HQ cap like that, and someone trash talking you, your morals should go out the window and you should just end the man right there 💀 Even if its short, you could always show multiple games in a single video to extend it to viewing length xD I haven't finished, but i was watching and Im like "no...expose this man... CAP THE HQ DAMN IT 🤣" As long as youre not a dick about it, I think most people find the idea of a trash talker and an egg going at it and throwing some slugs really entertaining!

i honestly thought your opponent could have countered within 2-3 moves. He wasn't as far behind as he thought and with some smart indirects of his own could have forced you into more losing engagements. Your rocket was an absolute monster for him, but it could have been dealt with if he committed to it a bit more. I do agree that his econ game was fairly poor (haha pun). He let you get the corners and so lost a lot of money in the process. I see why he did it, he probably thought he could rush your center, but the map is kind of made for that to not happen (3 bases surrounding the hq kind of stop that). His vision game was on point and he made good use of it when he could. Overall, a good game to learn from for everyone!

Due to losing both corners, Sonya was in a losing position. All Mangs had to do to win was keep Sonya from taking over the center again (an easy take with the units present) and use the income advantage to slowly steamroll.

It's too bad you've already uploaded good videos for both of these COs, but still a great video and commentary nonetheless. Some small nitpicks from me. You built a mech from the very far away base. Maybe it'd be better to build the mech on the more central bases and build the tank on the outer base? Lash loves mechs of course, and there are some mountains the perfect distance away from the left base or center right base to stop over or fight on for mechs. If some enemy unit stops on the other side of those mountains, the mech just walks over and absolutely chunks them with massive efficiency. Also, the tanks will have no trouble getting to the front lines from any base, but the same can't be said of the mech. Now this is just in combination with mechs being some of the most cost efficient and most annoying units to deal with, especially when they are in defensive terrain or even worse, captured properties. Mangs certainly already knows this so I'm just ranting to myself at this point. About repairs, I view it as both a value and situation thing. First of all, it's generally really bad to do against the CPU, because games against the CPU are more like quick puzzle challenges where you get a rank at the end. Slowly repairing units is generally something that hurts your rank. Against humans, you also generally don't want to do lengthy repairs because games are often decided in the midgame with some decisive moves. Repairs are best done in the early game or as an opportunistic thing. Like if your unit can get somewhere while stopping on a prop for repairs, of if it's a ranged unit in a good position who can still fighting while repairing, or it's early in the match and you are repositioning / preparing to ambush an advancing enemy unit next turn, you might as well repair at the same time. Otherwise, it really is just better off scouting, or body blocking, or combining with another unit. I don't think there was any question at all about building that second anti air or even more, because I think the crucial moment in this entire match was you building that rocket and putting it on that city. It utterly took the steam out of his push. So that copter directly threatens your investment, and on top of it it's still rather early in the game so the AA will chew up all the infantry still left on the board regardless. With AA I think there is almost no bad time to build them if you can afford it, unless you know the opponent has simply a massive amount of tanks or heavier stuff. And I think it's game over for him when he sends that battle copter after your rocket. That move didn't make much sense to me. You can see he just built an artillery, so he should probably try to get into a defensive position of his own in that area, but instead he sends his copter on a suicide mission against a very well defended autohealing rocket. I can't really see how that move could have benefited him. But really I think he shouldn't be attacking there at all. He is like 4 spaces from your factory and you have a million units there (and I'm pretty sure he can see most of them). There is absolutely no way he can gain value from attacking there. Yeah I'm not really sure if this guy should be shittalking people to be honest. Really, I think you should have done these types of things in your Kindle game as well. This is very similar to the perfect Kindle playstyle in my opinion, with meatshielding extremely powerful indirects on properties, and if anyone dares attack them? Well they're just healing up, and they still hit like trucks despite being damaged because of the huge +damage day to day. Then again, I feel this match is really the product of your opponent making a lot of mistakes. But yeah... really perplexing why he suicided all of that stuff on a rocket he knew he couldn't kill. That rocket is zoning, sure, but it's not like it was threatening any of his properties yet. If he sets up his own indirects and meatshields around his southern base (he already had one even), it's not that easy for you to attack it.

Just a small thing, it would be really nice if you had a Day counter somewhere on screen I'm a new player and I'm still figuring out things like, by what times I should be building certain units and it would help a lot

Rather than adding a popup, it'd probably be easier to do with the "video segments" rather than just intro, match, and ending, it'd be great if the match had a few extra points in it. Maybe not every day, but "day 1, day 5, day 10, etc" would be nice.

It's never an issue of what day to build on: Just look at how much you have left once the cost of the infantry is accounted for and build what you need as soon as you have enough for it. Don't try and rush a build without a reason if it means one less infantry: you'll suffer from that one missing unit. What to build on the other hand depends on the map, enemy CO, what's in sight and what you think is coming. If you don't play in fog (as you probably should if you are a beginner) it's easy to look at the enemy factory and build counters. If you play in fog and don't have a feel for what to expect you are at a huge disadvantage. Just keep a good balance of vision through mountain troops and recons, direct offence though tanks and BCops and punishing potential through artillery, anti-air and maybe rockets. As I already said it's way easier to start with non-fog to learn the pacing of the game.

Ok, I´m going to say it because it´s starting to make me mad. Mangs, there´s a calculator fo this, it´s on the bar over the map when you are playing, you can select any CO, unit and situation to calculate damage. You can even select units on the map; while holding "a" and selecting a unit you get it one the "attacker" side and holding "d" to the "defender".

Correct. But it also helps to get a feeling for it if you face Sonja as example. Because you have to guess how low her units are and make use of the replay feature. Knowing which unit of Sonja are actual injured is the key to winning against her. While as Sonja you really have to dominate the scouting game to win.

18:36 doing the calcs, lash attacking sonja on mountains from plains, the recon did (46-51, leaving 5-6hp,) then the infantry (46-52 on 6hp, leaving 1-2hp/48-55 on 5hp, leaving 0-1hp.) i'd say neutral luck, yeah.

Isn't the main issue in this map for example, that if you get 1 property and 1 infantry as player 2, you can essentially buy a infantry and recon and your only 1 infantry behind from your opponent, but if you play correctly, your recon can interrupt a capture and then just keep harassing the enemy paying itself back over the time causing more damage than 1 infantry instead of the recon could do in capture game? Edit : Second thing is that for example, with 6000 income that extra 1000 would give them a tank 1 turn earlier than player 1, or with 8000 income, a battle copter. (Of course you'd want to not base skip so you'd have 8000 income for tank + 2 infantry and that 1000 from the advantage, or 11000 if you want battle copter and 3 infantry, that battle copter will force an early AA out of the enemy which you can then counter with a tank which is cheaper so by the time the B-copter has interrupted few infantry and been chased by an AA which got killed by a tank, your already ahead) Or, let's say, 7000 so you get 3 infantry and a transport copter, there's a lot of things that can be done with that extra 1000.
