Three Houses is a game with faults, but it was also a rousing, smashing success. Let's sing the game's praises and shine a light on all the things Fire Emblem: Three Houses did right.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider helping it out with a like and a comment, it really helps out the channel!
---
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the latest entry in the tactical role-playing series developed by Intelligent Systems with support from Koei Tecmo Games. The game is the sixteenth game in the Fire Emblem series, and the first for home consoles since Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Three Houses is set on the continent of Fódlan, divided between three rival nations now at peace, connected through the Gareg Mach Monastery. Taking the role of a former mercenary and new tutor at Gareg Mach Monastery, the player must choose a nation to support and guide them through a series of battles. Will your strategies prevail?

Mangs you forgot one of the most important praises of Three Houses; the. Goddamn. Music. Like seriously Chasing Daybreak and Indomitable Will are just treats to you you ears. Let's not forget tge glorious God-Shattering (oma)star too. Most of all I like how every lord has a personnal theme linked to them in part 2, the King of Lions really shows Dimitri's resolve, even when berserked, the Leader's path makes you feel Edelgard's a powerful emperor not to mess with, even when she's on your side. And finally Golden Deer and Crescent Moon, while the calmest, still hides an ominous sound in the background showing that there is still war and really conveys Claude's easygoing personnality on the surface, but hides a strong, charismatic commander behind his cheery demeanor. I also find it cool that they added Crescent Moon in the name for Claude's theme, since the Crest of Riegan is moon shaped

Another great thing about 3H is it's INSANE attention to the detail, particularly in the little things and lines of dialogue, like in the support convos. For example, Ferdinand's A support with Bernadetta starts with him drinking tea, as normal, but if you saw his A+ support with Hubert beforehand, where he introduces Ferdinand to drinking coffee, then the support would actually start with Ferdinand drinking coffee! Another example is in Marianne's A support with Ashe, one you have to go out of your way to get. Up to a certain point the convo proceeds as normal, but if you saw Marianne's B support with Sylvain (another support you wouldn't get in a normal playthrough), where Sylvain teaches her to smile, then Marianne will say to Ashe how Sylvain said to her that a person's worth is in their smiles, something she ONLY says if you saw her Sylvain support. Even Ashe has a line for that. Two different support chains that have nothing to do with one another, and yet they put in that kind of detail, and there are tons of other examples, even outside of supports like with the unique dialogue in the monastery activities. Admittedly I lowkey wish that they put that insane attention to detail in the main story, like with the entirety of Crimson Flower for instance lol. Still, it's something to admire.

Another thing I noticed is that if you get Felix and Mercedes’ C support (I think) after doing her paralogue with the death knight, then in the line where Mercedes mentions that Felix reminds her of her brother there’s a few lines of dialogue talking about her brother being the death knight which I thought was really cool
@Besm2711

A funny thing I found is that some dialogue choices affect characters based on Byleth's gender. Seteth for instance (in one of those jolly monastery interactions) trusts F!Byleth when she says suspicious suitors are not flocking around Flayn but if M!Byleth says so, he actually gets mad~ I laughed a lot the first time. lowkeywishtheyputthatattentiontowardsCFx2

@@Besm2711 Oh I didn't know that! That's hilarious lol There's also another example but with Dorothea. In the monastery when she talks to Byleth about her missing "cloth", if M!Byleth tells her to look for it with her, she gets flustered and you don't get any support points, and the correct option is to inform that to Manuela; but if you're F!Byleth the correct option is the opposite, to look for the cloth with Dorothea, because of course she would trust Female Byleth more with something that awkward. Absolutely amazing stuff. YeahmanEdelgarddeservedbetter

Critique: this dish is alright, however you can definitely see that the dish itself is not laid out optimally, some parts taste strange, as if they don't work together well. The sauce is too liquid, it just doesn't work, you needed to let it rest longer. Praise: this dish is excellent, everything works perfectly well of eachother. Proud of the chef. That's the difference between Critique and Praise. It's generally harder to praise someone/something because everything works so well that some people can't explain it thuruly, you just have to expierence it yourself. Critiques are generally easier, as you can ascertain each mistake properly (especially if you are passionate).
@CyclonSilver
@CyclonSilver 4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... but there's a difficulty to critique too. It takes understanding and thinking to go beyond a basic "this sucks". I'd say praise can definitely take just as long, it's just a matter of detailing. The real difference in my opinion is that you do NOT get to critique things at a surface level on the internet, especially not as a popular youtuber. People WILL call you out on it at every chance if your arguments are shallow.

My favorite aspect of 3H is actually, The world. It seems a correction for Fates lack of worldbuilding. The continent is named, the countries are named, and there's a LOT of lore you can gleam from the library alone, along with supports and stuff. There's so much history RECORDED. You really see how the existence of crests affect both the world and all that reside within. I love Fodlan.

This exactly. The deep lore of the game is absolutely stellar. How the false history woven by Rhea affects each of the House leaders in a different way, how it unintentionally created the crest system that is one of Edelgard’s primary motivations, how it permeates into and pervades each of the student’s and staffs lives is truly fascinating. This aspect of the game blows out the other positives by a mile, imho

It's nice to feel like the world's been around and exists beyond the confinse of the game. In FE4, I got curious about what it was like when Baldur and Co. originally formed their kingdoms after defeating Loptyr. What were the early days of the expansion of Begnion in Tellius like? What was it like on the front lines of the Dagda invasion of Fodlan? Jugdral, Tellius, and Fodlan are, I think, the best worlds in the series because it feels like they've been lived in, and there is background that's only tangentially related to the modern conflict, that just adds flavor to the setting.

I personally disagree with this.The world building is actually really weak, while the lore is actually good.Evereything about Fodlan is only written, we never actually get to see much of it.There's tons of important characters that are driving forces behind important events, such as for example Caspar's and Linhardt's Father, as well as Hilda's brother, or Petra's Grandfather.We never actually see Brigid or most of the continent really, all we know about those places and the people that live there are snips and bits that are spoonfed to us through dialogue. Maybe I'm not using the exact terms, but as I said, I feel like the lore is nice, we read a lot about historical events and stuff, but we never actually get to see much of the said world.Compare it to a game with actual good World Building instead, like the Tellius games for example.We go around the entire continent, we meet everyone important in those places, we see how those places are being affected by the war, we see how they treat the laguz, their relationship with each other and so on.In 3 houses all of those things only happen in conversations. That said, it's certainly a step up from Fates, and if they didn't actually waste time and resources with stuff like making different routes and sutff, we might actually have seen more of the world itself.

"Everything Three Houses Did Right?" The characters! My goodness, I have never played a game where I fell so deeply in love with all of the characters on my team. I've played the Golden Deer route 3 times, and everytime I went through it, I could NEVER bring myself to skip dialogue. I loved the personality of everyone in the Deer, and I even though I wasn't into recruiting, the game still made me care about the other classes, too. I know it probably won't happen, but I'd love a sequel set in Fodlan where we can meet some of these characters again.

@mysticknight1494
@mysticknight1494 4 жыл бұрын
Personally I'd like a have prequel to Three Houses. One where we get to play out what happened with the Agarthans, Nemesis, the 10 Elites, the other Saints, and even adult Sothis. I'd really like to actually know what happened during that war, and see some characters who were mentioned but not really shown like: Younger Seteth and Flayn Flayn's mom Human Macuil and Indech Portraits and personalities for the 10 Elites and more on Nemesis Whatever Agarthans existed at the time Timotheos, Noa, Aubin, and Chevalier Maurice And even other characters who we haven't heard of! I personally think that had potential to be an amazing game. But a sequel could be interesting, but maybe a ways into the future, not just the next gen. Kinda like Awakening, but not 2000 years because... We'd be well past modern times. Maybe 100 years tops.

@bravas105 4 жыл бұрын
@@mysticknight1494 I totally agree you. There is just so much potential with the history that was built for Fodlan. Even after the 10 elites business, which itself is really intriguing, there's the kingdom fighting for independence, then the alliance separating from the kingdom, or the insurrection of the seven. There's just so many interesting time periods in Fodlan's history just begging to be explored.

The problem with a sequel is that they’d have to pick one route to be canon, which would probably anger every member of the fandom that didn’t pick that route. There are ways around it for sure and I’d love to see it, but it’d be much harder to make than a prequel or a midquel.

The English VAs for this game really brought this game to life. While they did such an amazing job with voicing this game in general, they got involved in the community. One thing that was not mentioned is the music. I always find myself listening to most of the tracks and having some on repeat. One thing I like that 3H did over fates (since they are both aren’t remakes) is the world building. Fates was just on a continent called ??? and places slapped on the world and it honestly gets confusing. However 3H does it much better. Not only is the continent named, it has a history behind it and it makes sense. During part 2 we get to see an “interaction” with the map, aka you get to see armies actually going somewhere instead of the game just telling you. At least that wasn’t part of the “tell not show” problem. I think 3H handles fanscervice well. The game does have fanscervice but it doesn’t shove it in your face most of the time.

Probably one of the points you did in fact miss, is the absolutely stellar advertising of the game. I'm a pretty dififcult person to hype up for a game, especially after the catastrophe that fates was. But the marketing team made such a good job by dropping tidbits every now and then, showing actual ingame gameplay (which i find not only daring, but also incredibly important in a time where cinematic trailers dominate the advertising of games) and it actually looking pretty good. They had a seriously good mix on music, gameplay, character reveals, ctuscene-tidbits without actually spoilering the story at all. It got even me hyped who really wanted to find the "Fates" in this game. It also probably helped alot that they advertised it alongside Pokémon SwSh which was a completely advertising mess and made Three houses look so much more enjoyable, professional and polished.

Man my first run of 3H was probably the most fun I ever had with Fe. I never had as much fun on my next runs for this game. So many moments I can vividly remember so highlights for me:Windsweep Byleth saving my ass many times against bosses, Marianne getting a 20 crit with less and 40 hit(and winning a map), learning “the truth” beside the origin of crest, my Byleth being ONE point off from doubling Nemesis, to Claude getting a crit which allowed Byleth to do EXCAT damage with ruptured Heaven. But what I remember most of all was when I got to the final map of GD it felt like reading the end of a long series like Harry Potter, or lord of the rings. It felt like you too when on a journey and now it’s coming to an end. You laughed, you smiled, and maybe even cried with these characters. I didn’t really feel that on my subsequent LP’s because it wasn’t as special. It probably why GD is my favorite Route because it’s basically a group of friends playing a DnD campaign. Compared to the soap opera that is BL(not that’s a problem or anything), it feels a lot more epic in GD because the momentum never puts up until the very end. That’s pretty wraps it up, while it’s not perfect I definitely think it the best fire Emblem game to data. And I do not mean that lightly. But my heart will always go to Thracia 776.

Kay, so that list is a tad short. Let's add to it, shall we! 1: The music! By far the most glaring omission according to this comment section! And I can agree. It feels like a given for FE, but really it should never be treated as one. Chasing Daybreak for the win. Also Between Heaven and Earth. Also God Shattering Star. Also Apex of the World. etc! 2: The timeskip designs! Getting new grown up designs for characters is so amazingly cool and pleasant. Most of them are really good, too! Remember when everyone was complaining about the artstyle, yeah we don't see too much of that anymore do we? 3: Battalions and Gambits! Sure some of them are completely broken, but overall they're a really nice addition that completely changes up how you deal with your typical FE situation. 4: The magic system! Not perfect either, but still arguably the most interesting take on it we've gotten yet? Personal spell lists, charges per map, range affecting accessories... I feel that mages have never been this unique and fun to mess around with. 5: You get your money's worth and then some! After what Fates pulled off, and ignoring the dlc, Three Houses being a steal even at full price was a really, really good thing. Obviously it does recycle maps too much, but still, it's quite the package overall. 6: Gauntlets are a really cool weapon type! Giving unmounted units something good to call their own was a really good idea, and they're strong enough that they don't feel superfluous or worthless, even in a game where fliers are the meta. 7: Demonic beasts are pretty neat, so are giant bosses! Another example of something that adds to the true and tried FE formula in interesting ways. They could use more variety in how to deal with them in the future, but they're still a pretty great addition. 8: They finally got bows right! Basically took the entire series(in Echoes they're definitely too good), but there you go, bows are relevant yet not particularly broken. 9: The Monastery was a really important step in the right direction! Picture actual free roaming through actual towns in FE. The monastery is the beta version of that in a way, and really they got most about the place right, beyond, you know, making you spend half of your playtime there. 10: Byleth is in Smash! Nah jk. 10: Every house is a winner! You probably have your (strong) preference, but there's really no wrong choice here and that's genuinely nice. There's just a lot to all three and it's a big reason many of us triple/quadruple dipped in spite of the monastery tedium and having to replay through White Clouds and paralogues. That's why despite many of us agreeing that this game was too ambitious for its own good, it's difficult to point at content that should be cut, because almost all of it is meaningful.

Totally agree on everything :) To be honest I didn't like this video. I liked the "what it did wrong" because most things were true and well argumented but this one felt like a bit of a lazy counterpart like "it didn't suck though, chill guys".. Many people are saying that "praise is simpler" but it actually isn't that much, if you critique something the good points should be properly exposed. Positivity is as important as negativity in a review-like setting and also a product to grow doesn't need only bad reviews, it needs both. An example would be Chaz talking about Genealogy in the video where he tells you "5 Reasons You Should NOT Play Genealogy of the Holy War": it's 22 minutes long and he really explained what's there to like and counterargued why not and you can really tell he really really loves it. I may be off the mark but this is just what this video conveyed to me. To be fair Chaz is in love with FE4 and Mangs has been quite burnt out of 3H after 3 playthroughs (and it makes sense) but I feel like this video wasn't really well thought upon.

@@BabyGirlTiny I did stretch a bit to reach 10, admittedly. Mangs' picks encompassed a lot of things that could have been individually praised but I couldn't bring back as a result, since they were technically already in there. With that being said, you disagree with every single one? Many of these are the opinion of the majority from what I've seen, and regardless, you can usually at least appreciate the addition on a conceptual level. That goes for evolving unit appearance, battalions(additional strategic layer), demonic beasts(new enemy type), the monastery(free roaming), gauntlets(aka giving unmounted units a strong combat tool unique to them to compensate for them being underwhelming by nature)...And the music isn't objectively bad, it's not an opinion to state that there's quality there. The rest I will openly admit is debatable. For what it's worth, the comment wasn't meant to be taken too seriously or to upset anybody.

Going to have to disagree with the demonic beasts. They were just big sponges that didn't always play by the rules the game set. It sucks attacking with a battalion and giving a clear path for retaliation only for them to go after a unit they weren't even highlighting. It wasn't fun getting a crit just to wipe out 10 damage and start the next life bar. I feel if they would have had a big health bar and no armor it would have been better. Would have been so fun to see your favorite character crit and bring down this giant monster with one blow. That just cant happen with how they are.

I have something to share about my experience with this game: This game was the first FE game that I have played. I never got into the series as a kid because tactical games never appealed to me. I went to gamestop just to see what Switch game I should try. I got 3H because I heard good talk about it, and I didn't see any other game that appealed to me. I saw how "boring" it was in the beginning and had thoughts of returning it, but I still continued. Little by little I was captivated by the gameplay, character varieties & growth, and most importantly the OST. I saw myself playing this game for like 12 hours when I had off, only to see what happens next and what classes my students could learn. Honestly I never found a game in which I would want to replay over and over again in my current age until I encountered 3H. Hearing very familiar VAs (i dabble in dubbed anime) was pretty great, and seeing how wholesome and chill these VAs are made me appreciate the work put into this game even more. I can't wait to see what they'll do with the next title!

Hey Mangs! I liked your dual reviews. It's good to end on a positive note. That being said, I think there's one thing 3H did right that you brought up very early during your Crimson Flower playthrough, but appears to be missing from this video: Bows. Shadows of Valentia was already on a good track, but 3H just improved it. Consider the following: 1) Support mechanics. Even for characters unskilled at Bow use, it's not a bad idea to have a Bow in inventory if you have the space, if only to provide support bonuses to other characters. Fire Emblem has taught us the value of defensive trading (setting up for the enemy phase), but 3H shows us that we can also set up offensive trading to help secure your attacks during player phase, too. We haven't seen this since Awakening and Fates with their dual strikes. 2) All characters get access to Curved Shot at D-rank. That's an early access to 2-3 range that anyone can get. 3) Close Counter. The answer to what made Bow wielders bad before SoV. Again, accessible to everyone at C-rank. 4) All archery classes get a Bow range bonus. This comes at the cost of reduced accuracy at long range, but Sniper teaches you Hit +20, which pays dividends in kind on Maddening. 5) Any character can go Sniper and rock Hunter's Volley. Double attack with added might, accuracy, and crit, on a class that has very high Dexterity; it just ends foes altogether. It's what made the Nerd a powerhouse in your Verdant Wind run with Chaz. 6) Beyond that, you still get a lot of mileage from characters with Bow affinities, granting a lot of utility that used to be mostly reserved to Staff users in the past. Deadeye (Bernadetta, Ashe) gives you the largest range available outside siege magic. Encloser (Bernadetta, Claude) is a discount single-target Gambit that is only limited by your ability to supply your unit with bows. Schism Shot (Hubert, Hanneman) chips when setting up kills from your mages, especially if this allows them to avoid a counter-attack in the first place. Break Shot (Ignatz, Leonie, Anna) sets up weapon kills in the same way. Waning Shot (Petra, Ashe) means you'll get to survive that counter-attack if you have to take it. Ward Arrow (Ignatz, Hanneman) is essentially Silence, but with damage and usable more often. Point-Blank Volley (Leonie, Cyril) means you get to double even when you don't want to run Sniper.

"Back in my day we didn't have (insert quality of life feature here) boomer talk." Although I may be exhibiting what I hated most as an adolescent; having some boomer critique something you hold dear to your heart. I don't mean to rip the band-aid off but people only criticize things they care about, otherwise they wouldn't criticize them so hear me out. I truly believe that counting tiles is a feature. When the game does the counting for me I feel stripped of a skill. In my opinion the reason fire emblem is fun is because its a challenging game; challenge compels the player to overcome said challenge. This means that (unless you use a guide) the player has to come up with their own solution to beat the challenge, with the tools at their disposal. This quickly becomes a solving process where the player reacts to what the game throws at them by running that encounter through a logical process, applying their knowledge and skill. The problem with fire emblem is that process includes inherently tedious things like doing math and counting tiles. This is an issue with fire emblem as a mainstream gaming medium. When people play a game they don't want a game to make them count and do math. So i applaud FE3H and I have to admit that these quality of life features are a good reason the game is garnering a wider audience. But lets get back to my opinion, because for me, on the surface Fire emblem is not a very engaging experience. Half the time people just play it like a pokemon game anyway. "I need to have one of each type of pokemon," "I want to put THIS pokemon on my team becasue its cute/cool," "i need to grind some levels for the next gym leader," "I will argue for hours about why grookigang is superior." You get the point. But the reason Fire Emblem kept me hooked is because as a kid the game kicked my ass. 7/8 year old me wanted to beat FE8 so bad and I just kept trying new things and discovering new ways to take advantage of those tools at my disposal. and I don't mean to put myself on a pedestal but In hindsight I became pretty good at fire emblem in an echo chamber. I learned a lot on my own before I ever watched my first mekkkah video. So what I'm trying to get at is when the game holds my hand and does the numbers for me, I feel robbed of that learning and solving process. Since the game does it for me it forces me to feel disengaged from the outcome like I wasn't aloud the opportunity to make a mistake. Because In FE3H I can't accidentally put a unit in enemy range and have that same unit get killed. I would hover a unit somewhere see that an enemy can attack that unit and also the damage that unit will take. Before I've even looked at the enemies on the map I know where to and where not to put my units. juxtapose this to all that time I spent as a kid having to learn to calculate all this stuff by myself and being rewarded for that effort. This disconnect is the reason I think 3H is a boring game that actively stunts the growth of the player. And I acknowledge this is a niche opinion; I'm not saying i'm right, nor do I have an authority on how FE games should be designed. In reality a gaming franchise should not be catered solely to me. In fact if it was nobody would buy it, fire emblem game sales alone prove this statement. So If you like 3H more power to you and in fact I kinda envy you because I have been waiting for a new fire emblem game to satisfy my itch for the series since 2011. And from the way things are headed this old boy will have to hang his hat and go elsewhere.

@@CyclonSilver First and foremost I appreciate your empathy. Only recently have I finally let go of FE. The journey was kinda rough, questions like "do i even like this game?" and such arose. But i dispelled my skepticism quickly because I can confidently say that I truly love fire emblem. Its one of the games that shaped my love for games in general. The right type of game for me is one that is easy to play and equally easy to fail. It creates this feedback loop where the player is constantly learning something new through gameplay experience alone. This ends up meaning, hours spent playing translates to players relative skill level. Its that arcadey skill curve that I find the most fun and rewarding. I think the conceptual design of fire emblem reflects this skill curve pretty well and is the reason people LTC in the first place. Applying all your knowledge and skills to shave off just one more turn. This is the reason the game stuck with me for so many years. With that being said I have found many games to pivot to that exhibit similar design philosophy. Games like Tetris, CSGO, 2D Sonic, Sekiro, cuphead, variety MOBA and TCGs. These are my recent favorites, all different genres of game but they all have one thing in common. They are easy to play while also being difficult to master. Even though it can no longer hold my attention fire emblem is a game that i love and I appreciate it for shaping my taste in games. And thankfully I'm the type of guy who is good at moving on. Sure i'd like a new fire emblem game for me but I'm also not going to lose sleep over it.

The monastery's awesome and shows the sheer volume of there hub spaces. I agree that it was a chore most of the time, but I'd only say it felt that way because you're unsure what to expect or discover, and most of the time its conversations which may allow you to recruit and do paralogues with characters. In this example, the value in this is inherent to the value you place on the recruitable character at the time. The first few times you play you may attempt to get all the characters, and correct me if I am wrong, but this seems very difficult if not impossible during the 1st play through. I have heard you can give character items purchased with renown which is built high after a few playthroughs. Basically padding the other requirements, like skills in weapons/magics and high level in stats you may not have because you are building a certain way. Either way it becomes apparent at the outset of a play through that if your going for a Warrior Byleth then Lysithea, Marriane and Annette ain't got shit to say to you and are unlikely to ever join your class lest you give them things/teatime etc. I definitely think they can expand on the hub space and maybe even make a few, like imagine having gone a hub space in the Aquatic capital, the Imperial city of the magic school etc. Multiple spaces may help. In the end you can skip the monastery but you will miss out on all the "loot" and discovery. They should buff the skip and just give you everything you would have found and progress conversations and ask you if you want to recruit characters if they will join you. Also they should show how close you are to recruiting a character. The sad thing about this is most people would skip so much pretty architecture but idc about that in a speed run lol.

Overall 3H probably has some of my personal favorite cast of characters(especially GD #fearthedeer) But here are my thoughts on certain characters Edelgard: Works better as villain than a protagonist. There are simply some lines you do not cross and once you go there you can never go back. I love how Sympathetic she is as a villain, I truly understand where is she coming from, but that doesn’t mean I agree with her methods. The war she started was a necessary a evil for sure, because that was the only way for Foldlan to move on, and progress beyond this crest system. That being said I don’t think she should of started that war because at the end of the day: all war is completely unnecessary. She’s like funny Valentine from Steelball run: They don’t view themselves AS villains. Even when there doing morally questionable things. But here’s the difference between the two: A GOOD antagonist is sympathetic. A GREAT antagonist is one whose motivations is BETTER than our protagonist(again Funny Valentine). Sadly though Edelgard comes off as hypocritical in her own route and she never gets challenged or even goes though an ARC like Dimitri or Claude. She is unintentionally unsympathetic. Best villain Fe hands down though(suck it Arivs your overrated anyway). Dimitri: A unique lord that stands out as we see him at his BEST and WORST, has probably a more tragic back story that rivals that of Jugdral characters(whichsays a LOT btw), and has a nice ARC that ends naturally. But what I find most interesting is his Gilbert support: It shows he still wants Gilbert to kill him even after he’s “healed” in there A support. Which just goes to show how damaged he is mentally. A cross with Marth, Ike, and Leif is you rolled them into one character. Overall a very solid character, with Chris Hackney doing a great job voicing him. I can’t say anything else that I’m sure other people have said. Claude: Easily my favorite character in all of Fe 3H honestly. One of the best lords in the series(up there with Leif, Ike, and Dimitri for me). You don’t need to have a overly traumatic background, or have the equivalent of Crest cancer, to be a good character. I love how despite coming as untrustworthy, he’s the only sane lord post-timeskip, and thinks the most pragmatic. The most relatable thing I find about Claude is his curiosity of Foldlan, and wanting to find “the truth” behind crest. Just like Claude we are completely ignorant of Foldlan, and we both have that drive to find what’s REALLY going on. It’s why the GD and there Paralogue’s put more emphasis on world building and lore. And I love too how cool and collected he is as a war is going on, showing how awesome he is. Another thing too is his development happens as the route progresses, as learns to trust others, and opens up. I also love his dynamic with Byleth. He sees Him/her as a equal and friend(and I love how it shows with how he’s the ONLY character to call you “teach” so casually even before the time-skip). And in general GD has the best consistent climax out of any route. And how the route balances everything, so nicely. Plus Joe Zieja is the coolest and nicest person ever. Golden deer for life! #fearthedeer Byleth: The video by Mekkah pretty much sums up my thoughts on him(check it out for yourself). Honorable mentions: Marianne: Not only does she ACTUALLY develop in the story of GD as she grows more confident like in her supports unlike a certain character(Cough cough Bernadetta cough cough). And low key her Byleth support heavily implies she is suicidal which is super dark and shows how society can make people feel awful. I understand where she’s coming from because she reminds me of one of my friends who went through a similar experience.(just look at the new Joker movie. We truly live “in a society”). But her background shows two things about Foldlan: 1. How toxic, corrupt, and backwards the crest system is. Marianne is discriminated because she was unlucky to be born with the “wrong” less desirable crest. In a society where having a crest is valuable. 2. Her relation to her ancestry which reveals and adds more fuel to fire that the church is hiding something, and god knows what that is(Especially if your playing GD or church). And how fucked up the history of Foldlan actually is. Felix: What makes him so unique is that outside of his Route he actually go though a min-character ARC. In which by the end he either unknowingly becomes Dimitri(avenging and living for the dead), or he laments his hatred for Dimitri has lead down a path in which he’s no better than than him. And especially around chapter 17 is sad for Felix no matter how you look at it: He’s either grieving for Dimitri and regretting not being there, or outright killing him himself, or dealing with the lose of his dad. In general I LOVE the snarky aloof “Jerk with a heart of gold” type of characters(it’s probably why I love characters like Shinon and Python), it’s just wholesome seeing them develop and open up to people. Especially with Felix being the massive tsundere that he is, he literally doesn’t put up with anyone’s shit, he’s straight, blunt and to the point. Which is why I find his supports great especially with females outside of his house which shows he has a soft spot for small cute girls(Lysitheac, Flayn etc) or they genuinely annoy him but warms to them(Dorothea, Leonie). Specifically can I mention Felix x Dorothea because that A+ support is super underrated. I love how there personalities clash with each other at first but as the support goes on, Felix develops a respect for Dorothea. In conclusion: Felix can be an asshole, but deep down he’s a cool guy who went though shit.(which is something I myself relate to)

I know everyone likes to talk about Genealogy's plot, but honestly it's a bit too dense and exposition heavy to me. Like, not in the "rich with content" way, but more like the "here's a tub of sticky oatmeal, have fun slowly eating through it all". It does have good ideas though, and lots of potential that is carried off decently well. I think my issues with it would be resolved by the updated presentation of a remake. Definitely better with voice acting. I prefer the plot of 3 Houses. I feel like I'm never overwhelmed by the information I'm being given. I suppose what I'm trying to say is I prefer 3 Houses' storytelling, even if FE4 might have the better plot. I love how fleshed out Fodlan is. I feel like it's the best world we've had. Honestly I think Fodlan is one of the best aspects of the game. Dimitri's arc, while certainly not perfect, was the most interesting character writing we've had in an FE protagonist. Same with Edelgard's villainy, definitely not perfect but very compelling. The writing is very charming. Maybe not quite as charming as Echoes, or Awakening at its best, but it's got more content than Echoes and way more consistency than Awakening. The soundtrack is a banger. Not the best FE soundtrack, but certainly a great one. Certain tracks are really hype, or beautiful, or fun. While the visuals are ass in terms of graphical quality, I am a big fan of the character designs. There's great variety and personality, but it never borders on ridiculous except for when Manuela takes to the battlefield with her tits falling out. The voice acting is amazing, and imo was shafted in terms of awards. I still hold Echoes as slightly better, but Echoes is literally the best I've heard in terms of voice acting so that's not a major loss. I like that supports feel less focused on romance in general, and although wacky hijinks occur it feels more realistic since most of them occur in C supports in Part 1 and students being goofy isn't that weird. This meshes the supports and story quite well in terms of tone, with heavier beats typically coming in when the characters are older and at war. I myself enjoy the level of management you have over each student. It really feels like you're building them up yourself, which is cool. Battalions are an interesting and fresh addition. While not totally balanced, and maybe not something we should see too much in the future, I did like what they brought to this game. On that note, I appreciate that the boss units in this game FELT like boss units. With multiple health bars, larger sizes, and abilities unlocking throughout the fight, it feels like you were taking on something bigger than yourself. No more oneshotting Grima or Fomortiis. This game is almost as replayable as a Pokemon game. As the kind of person who buys a game every 8 months and plays it over and over, that's great for me. There's a lot to take from 3 Houses, and I can't wait to see what IS does next. I'm not sure if it's my favourite FE game, but it's certainly top three which is quite the achievement.

One of the things I love the most about Three Houses is how they built the story up until the point you get to War at Gronder (and I'm mad you don't have that chapter in Crimson Flower, so you don't get to experience such an intense moment in your first playthrough if you went Black Eagles). Since they really emphazised on you caring about the students, everything about that chapter is a pool of emotions, and the music makes an amazing job capturing all of that. I think for many of us, that part of the game is one of the reasons why you want to replay the game, so you get to recruit everyone before it's too late.

I too changed my opinion quite a bit on Seteth, at first I thought he was ok at best but nothing more, I had played the 3 "main" routes ( so no silver snow ) at launch and I only did silver snow during this quarantine and I ended up really enjoying Seteth, so much in fact that I broke my rule to s support Rhea in the church route right before I got to the final map, although it is also because I really don’t like Rhea but hey

Regarding "Planning of playthroughs": My first playthough was black eagles (edelgard): a regular fist game, everyone became what they wanted to be On my second playthough i played golden deer. everyone was forced to learn Authority, so everyone is A-rank now and can use any battalion i want them to. classes were pretty random though next I have done an "all bishop" on black eagles (monastary)run and an "all wyvern" run on blue lions, so i can give all my units Renewal in every following run or make them flying whenever I feel like it. my next run will be "all bow kight" just because i heard they are OP and i'd like to try it. The "all wyvern" run i did on kinda the looked for middleground between hard and maddening because i played on hard but only uses broken weapons which thankfully makes killing the enemy a lot harder due to greatly reduced accuracy, and farming class points therefore a lot easier. My endgoal is to have everyone maxed out in everything so maddening will be a piece of cake

It's important to understand the flaws of something you like, but it's also important to remember all of the reasons why you liked it in the first place. If you truly enjoy something you'll be able to weigh the positives with the negatives and truly decide which you value the most. I gladly except the flaws of three houses, however it will never change the fact that it was definitely one of the best games in the franchise. It's far from perfect but what they were able to accomplish with this game was truly remarkable and it gives me hope that we can continue to see more high quality games in the future, which I honestly needed after fates.

I didn't actually notice much fan-service in Three Houses. The camera didn't focus on cleavage or anything, unless you are talking about Manuela. Raphael and his muscles was certainly fan-service. The main fan-service I noticed was the clothing. Dorothea after the time-skip, Hilda's cosplay as a succubus or something, the maid costumes in the DLC. Other than that, there wasn't much to it. The fact that there isn't much fanservice, and it isn't obvious, doesn't actually bother me, which is good.

Heck they're a few coincidences like how the date started in April, The three houses is like the colors of P3, P4, P5 and the theme of each routes. But I digress. I know it's not on-topic, but for Shadows of Valentia's replayability, I found that the free DLC Mila's Gifts 1 to 5 (I think that's what it's called) enhances its replayability by a lot. It grants you 5 pitchforks, which let you change the classes of any characters bar Alm and Celica. Cavalier Lucas? Shovel Knight Python? Mage Claire? You name it, all possible. I can attest to the might of the pitchfork as I've played through SoV 2 times now and have a 3rd playthrough going. The game is at the top of my FE game list, right beside PoR. As for 3H. The customization alone makes this game one of the best games in the series to replay. You may have 4 routes, but tbh, I found myself replaying it *just* to play different characters and builds. This has been traditionally why I play and replay FE games a lot, but 3H actually caters to that and I absolutely love it. Another thing I really like is how they dialed back on the character designs. It truly is a "less is more" kinda deal for me. In Awakening and Fates, while I did enjoy the general art style, the outfits really turned me off those games. Characters like Nowi or Camilla, Arthur or Charlotte really take me out of the game. Most of the ones listed are blatant fanservice and, more importantly to me, just wear stuff that actively feels out of place, as if they came through the deep realm and didn't belong into Ylisse or Fatesland. In 3H, on the other hand, every character feels like they belong. There's of course the school uniforms, but even after the time skip, most of them feel natural. The only one I might consider out-of-place is Petra, but since we never see people from Brigid and their fashion/war-drobe, that can't be helped.

The only one I would disagree on is #3. I felt that the fun of customization was best learned in your first playthrough. After subsequent playthroughs I never felt the desire to go through certain class chains, utilize certain skills and even certain classes altogether because I felt like it would be more work than I felt was needed. The only time I felt like actually going through all the customization was in my 2nd BL playthrough using New Game + to: -Get all students -All classes mastered -All weapon types mastered -All supports unlocked I'm gonna come out and say right now that the playthrough I just mentioned was a slogfest. Not even fun with the exception of hearing Dimitri's well written story again. In GD, SS, and CF (which make up my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th playthroughs), they were fun in terms of the story, but the overall customization was only fun during my playthrough of BL, which was my first. Also, the whole replayability was entirely based on the story and less on the characters since you could simply recruit all the students if you wanted to spare them post Timeskip. Finally, I'm glad that you didn't mention stellar gameplay as I think Three Houses had really dull gameplay. Even with the gambits, new skills to use, etc. the whole style just didn't feel well executed. Now I like 3 Houses for a great deal of reasons, more than the ones you just mentioned. It's ranked #4 on my favorite FE games list (only behind Blazing Sword, SoV, and Radiant Dawn) and #1 on my list of favorite Nintendo Switch. It has many strengths, but it's weaknesses are very clear.

It took me 3 playthroughs to warm up to a few characters that I initially despised, and there’s still some I just can’t like or enjoy. The game made me feel like such a hypocrite, too, I’m rooting for my house, but Edelgard makes a good point? Let’s just talk it out? Claude stole the title of favorite Lord for me, Felix is like my favorite character in the entire game, I got attached to Sylvain real quick and hated Dorothea so much for the way she treated him and Lorenz (you’re kind of on the same boat, pal?), I warmed up to Lysithea and Leonie, I have a big handful of characters I want to protect from all harm, I married Byleth to Hubert and miss him terribly when I play other routes… but I could never sympathize with Rhea and I /h a t e/ Gilbert’s guts. It’s the context you get per route, you get to know them, the “why” behind their actions and you get attached. It’s because they have such good characterization that I’m able to FEEL something for them, they’re all memorable in their own way. OFC there’s a select few that are my babies and get special treatment with reclassing and such, but the fact that I’m going out of my way to recruit everyone means the game succeeded in making me so attached to them that I fear having to go and kill them if I can’t recruit them. Having to kill Caspar that first time around because he refused to join me hurt so much that he was the first one I recruited in my next playthrough so I could marry him off to Hilda. Not this time, Caspar!!!
