I live in Zululand South Africa and speak isiZulu. Mangwane mpulele is one of the other languages spoken in Africa. I visited Savannah Georgia this year and at Hilton Head Airport the Afro American security check in man asked me "You from South Africa? Why you not black?" I replied "you black and why don't you speak isiZulu"! Thank you so much for singing this song of my childhood so beautifully.

Mmangwane mpulele ke nelwa ke pula (Aunt please open for me, it is raining on me) Le ha dile pedi, le ha dile tharo, ke nyala mosadi ( Even if there's two, even if there's three, I am able to take a wife) the numbers refer to the cows It's a traditional South African wedding song in Setswana.

Lovely. But why is the song credited to Theodore Bikel? I admit that I first heard the song performed by him on an album called "An Actor's Holiday" (1956), but this was a collection of folk songs from many lands. I'm sure he never claimed he wrote an African song. (He was born in Vienna in 1924. His family escaped from the Nazis and fled to Palestine. He took up acting, which took him to England & then the US, where he still lives.) Again, fine job by these young folks and their choir director.
