I actually lived on 137th street in the 1970s. The 1 train for years had a speed restriction on this viaduct where all trains had to go slow. This has since changed in the last 20 or so years due to construction. Also before there was a 9 train, every other number 1 terminated at 137 Street while all other trains went up to 242 Street. Young man you're doing an excellent job.

THE DOWNTOWN TRACK SOUTH OF 125TH IS AN OPTICAL ILLUSION. SINCE THE STREET GOES UP HILL, THE TRACK APPEARS TO GO DOWN HILL INTO THE SUBWAY. I WAS A NEW MOTORMAN INSTRUCTOR (1979) AND I CAME FROM THE "B" DIVISION. ONE DAY I ASKED THE MOTORMAN TO BRING THE TRAIN TO A FULL STOP AS SOON AS HE CLEARED 125ST STATION. THEN I TOLD HIM TO RELEASE THE BRAKE. WE BOTH EXPECTED THE TRAIN TO ROLL DOWN HILL. THE TRAIN DID NOT MOVE, EVEN AN INCH. WE WERE BOTH STUNNED. THE MOTORMAN SAID HE OPERATED THE "1" TRAIN FOR YEARS & THOUGHT THE TRACK WAS DOWN HILL SOUTH OF 125TH STREET. I TOLD ALL THE OTHER #1 LINE MOTORMAN THIS AND ALL OF THEM TOLD ME LATER ON THAT THEY ALL STOPPTED THEIR TRAIN SOUTH OF 125TH STREET AND WERE ALL SURPRISED THEIR TRAIN DID NOT ROLL WHEN THEY RELEASED THE BRAKE. EVERY ONE WAS SURPRISED BY THIS. SIGNED " OLD MOTORMAN INSTRUCTOR".

@@blue9multimediagroup I think it might actually be an illusion as the Earth is not flat. Many people believe the planet is a sphere, but it also happens to be an illusion as there are lots of deep valleys and oceans, along with mountains that make it shaped more like a potato. It looks round from space, but if we were to remove all the bodies of water, along with the clouds in our atmosphere, then it wouldn't look perfectly round. The slope is still real.

I just subscribed to this terrific channel about a month ago and ALREADY I'm as proud of subscribing as I was when my son was born in Brooklyn 38 years ago Lol. THIS particular video has a very special and sentimental meaning to me as like many of my neighbours here who've commented, I grew up in Manhattanville and particularly the Manhattanville Houses on the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and 133rd Street and from my 18th story living room and kitchen, I got to see my beloved #1 line EVERYDAY as I stared out the windows at it (I also had a clear view to the Westside highway and the Hudson line that ran under it just beyond the new Cotton Club building where I'd occasionally see movement of heavyweight cars). Although we were closer to the 137th Street station and I ALWAYS enjoyed walking up Broadway to the 137th St through the vastly culturally rich Hamilton Heights neighbourhood where I had both elementary and JHS friends, I loved walking down hill and up hill upon returning home to/from that iconic 125th street station. As design wise, I just loved it. I remember it BEFORE the escalators were built, I remember the wooden plank platform & station (mezzanine? where the token booth was) flooring and have often wondered what it looked like currently since I moved out of NYC 35 years ago, so thank you for showing that part of the station. You brought back many fond memories for me. The #1 line will forever be my favourite subway line in the NYCT subway system, and the 125th street station will ALWAYS occupy a special heartfelt place in this diehard west Harlem guy's heart. If my son only realised what he missed not growing up in NYC during my time when it was safe. My brothers and I started riding the subway by ourselves when I was eight years old and my older brother was twelve years old and our younger brother was six years old. Try that today, I don't want to ride the subway as a man in his 60's... Great video, THANKS so much for it!

Great video. I find the 174-175 Sts IND station in the Bronx very fascinating. From 175 st you descend to the platform. To exit at the other end of platform, you *descend* to reach the 174 st exit. A bit jarring when you first do it. The station has a gentle curved track which is cool. The whole station was beautifully renovated a few years ago.

The Gun Hill Road Station on the 2 line always fascinated me as a kid. I wasn't around for the 3Av line that I believe had a terminal there but I always wondered what that looked like and why it was eliminated. One of the reasons why I love being a New Yorker is the how the Subway connects stations with such depths of individual character! The bridges near the 225St station on the 1 & Whitlock Av station on the 6 stand out structurally to me as much as the curves achieved near the E Tremont Av & Simpson Av stops on the 2/5 line and the N/W's turn into Queensboro Plz. Speaking of Queensboro Plz, why isn't it linked to Queens Plz like the connections made at Broadway Junction? The growth of the stations beside both baseball stadiums I believe would be an interesting story to tell. I vaguely remember how the E branched off from the F to meet the J & Z trains at the Jamaica Parsons Terminal: I think that's a good story, too. It'd be great to revisit the history of both Atlantic Ave & Coney Island terminals to have a greater appreciation of how they still function today. Even S.I.'s St. George Terminal deserves some love! (Sorry for the long comment 😬)

Yeah, the Gun Hill Road station is pretty interesting. I plan to make a video on it sometime in the future. Both that station, and the 167 St Station on the (4) formerly connected with some of the demolished elevated lines in the city. For QBP and QP, I'm not really sure on why they aren't connected, however, I would like to see at least an Out-Of-System transfer there. Also, for St. George... Coming Soon.

The 125th Street viaduct station is absolutely flat. So much so that you can stop a train there, fully release the brakes and it won't roll even an inch. Also, strictly in terms of height, 116th street Columbia (one stop down) is higher above sea level than the 125th street station. And the viaduct itself has (still visible) "earthquake hinges" because of the fault line underneath. Good report

While you have given the reason for this stretch of the line and the station, it should also be noted that theHarlem depression as the DOT calls that stretch is part of an underlying geological fault that crosses upper Manhattan. So, if a tunnel had been decided upon, apart from a step angle on both sides, the tunnel would not have been built upon bedrock as the fault is much deeper and covered by substantial soil above. All the columns that support the viaduct reach to bedrock.

This is my stop -- I literally live in its shadow. In fact, you have a great shot of my building. I wonder why the MTA didn't run the 9 train express on the center track north of 96th to allow passengers from the Bronx to get downtown faster. Even if it stopped at only 3-4 stations from Van Cortlandt Park, it would offload a lot of passengers from the local 1 trains.

When they came out with the train I thought it was going to do run Express during rush hours north of 96 St. But they decided on skip stop service which was the STUPIDEST thing ever. the concrete on most stations outside needs to be redone, most platforms are covered by yellow giant tiles along with cracks and it doesn't look good. (like at 1:18)

what is the difference between a skip stop trains and an express train?
@MysticTransit
@MysticTransit 2 жыл бұрын
Skip Stop Trains usually stop every other station or so, alternating with another service along the line. You can see this with the (J)/(Z) Trains. Neither of them are true expresses, however, they alternate which stops they skip, and which they stop at. This is supposed to make service faster, but ends up providing a negligible difference.

Then why is the Lenox Avenue and Lexington Avenue lines underground?
@MysticTransit
@MysticTransit 2 жыл бұрын
This is true. Under 125 St and Broadway lies a fault line. The line travels south through Manhattan, and I believe ends on the northern tip of Central Park. The Lenox/Lexington Lines are still underground simply because the fault line doesn't reach the East Side of Harlem. They do however have to navigate steep inclines at the 103 St (6), and south of the 110 St (2/3) Stations.

How dud you leave out the part about the viaduct being constructed over massive hinges due to the geological 125th St fault laying under the bridge? Only one of it's kind in NYC.

I did talk about the unusual topography at the station, and in one of the pictures I showed in the video, it mentioned the 125 St fault line, making it unnecessary for me to talk about.

@@michaelmorales1475 The 225th Street station is in the Marble Hill neighborhood. The 215th Street and 207th Street stations are in Inwood. The Dyckman Street station is in the Fort George neighborhood, and right next to its border with the Inwood neighborhood. Many people refer to the Washington Heights neighborhood as bigger than it really is by calling a place part of it, while it's really in another neighborhood such as Hamilton Heights. It's not the only neighborhood that often gets its size overestimated, as other ones such as the Upper East Side (Manhattan), Upper West Side (Manhattan), Riverdale (Bronx), and many more! I believe it's mainly because of the popularity of the name, while some are simply not aware of such names.
