The Uzi wielding SWAT guys were downright terrifying. They could jump around the corner and turn you into red paste before you ever knew what hit you. Even when I play Manhunt on occasion for old times sake, I still get chills hearing the combination of the combat music, and the rumbling of Uzis, followed by that "holy SHIT!" moment when you realized your health bar teleported to near death. It really felt like Cash's abilities were pushed to the limits here, these guys are not some punk Neo-Nazis or gangbangers with baseball bats and crowbars, they are pros who are FAR smarter than any enemy in the game, they won't fall for your attempts at luring and will box you in and destroy you very quickly if you try to Rambo your way out of this situation. No more theatrics, no more "acting" for Starkweather's films, their role is pure and simple- make sure Cash never leaves that subway alive, as Starkweather said in the beginning over the garbled radio. The Carcer City SWAT team felt like SEAL Team 6 compared to the rest of the degenerate psychos, wannabe tough guys and corrupt cops you fight in every other level up to this point. The Vietnam comparison is apt, because this is one of the few times in the game, except for the final battle with Piggsy and the initial fight with Ramirez and the Wardogs, you are no longer the hunter here, you are the prey, and the only way to win this battle is with guerilla warfare. This level was so unique from the others, the music and the atmosphere drip with dread and carry the weight and the seriousness of the situation you are in, it was such a nightmare of a level to play through for the first time. I miss the creative genius of the old school Rockstar that they've lost so much of in recent years.
@tomhansen7582 Жыл бұрын
@@keithm5378 in the entire game you fight 20 of these guys, of which, only half have those dreaded MAC-11s. The rest all carry the desert Eagle or the Spas-12. Comparatively, you’re going to kill over 45+ of literally any of the other gangs. (I know that Ramirez and Piggsy were only one, but bosses tend to be more memorable than random groups) The fact that such a limited enemy count that is far more common than say neo Nazis, extremist militias/survivalists, the Innocentz and the Smileys which are much more the face of the game can make such a strong impression really says something. I can only imagine the true dread actual criminals have when SWAT is called in real life, knowing that shooting back is also probably instant death. These guys really are the pros in the game. You can call it OP, but even compared to the Cerberus, it seems that the Carcer SWAT team has a far closer player to NPC kill ratio than the others. While this whole game was a twist on Rockstar making you feel like a powerful criminal who no one can cross upstanding and feel like a boss, I think this level really put it at its best. There’s no Scarface last stand. There’s no high speed chase that’s going to outsmart them with neat tricks and flips. You know damned well you are dead meat. The only difference between you and a bullet-drenched corpse is getting lucky, and maybe then, just maybe, you’ll win against these guys. No wonder this map left such an impression and is still scary/intense. I feel this was the gunplay gone right with the horror where a lot of the rest of the game was hit or miss.
@keithm5378 Жыл бұрын
@@tomhansen7582 Beautifully written. That is precisely the reason this level was, and still is, so scary. For the first time, Cash, and by extension the player, faced off against opponents that are every bit as dangerous as he is. And like you said, it lines up perfectly with how facing off against a well trained SWAT team in real life, typically goes for criminals who try to shoot their way out. No long drawn out Hollywood style shootouts, no theatrics, just "LAST CHANCE, DROP THE GODDAMN GUN, NOW!" *BANG BANG* dead, situation resolved. They are basically the police department's special forces unit usually only dispatched to deal with the most dangerous criminals and screwed up situations imaginable. And when they show up? The wise criminals surrender, and the dumb ones typically never even get a second shot off before getting put in the ground. Fighting the police stops being glamorous REAL fast when the squad in black tactical armor armed with assault rifles and SMGs show up. We mow down cops with glee in the GTA games, sure the higher wanted levels can be a bit challenging at times, but they never made you genuinely FEAR the SWAT team like they did in Manhunt. And unlike the GTA games? There's no way of magically escaping this 5 star wanted level. You have to use guerilla tactics and hope for the best. Even then, you will still die in half a second if they spot you and surround you quickly enough, or if you're just unlucky on that run. The Carcer SWAT team is basically another boss battle in and of itself because they're the single most deadly enemy in the entire game, you never know which ones have the Uzis until you see them, they're much smarter about boxing you in and taking you down, and we never see them again. Except for the lone SWAT officer in the start of "Trained to Kill", also carrying an Uzi, and in the end of the same level during a cutscene where they're quickly gunned down by the Cerberus. And that's the last time we see them. The power fantasy you experience in the GTA and Red Dead games is nowhere to be found here. Carcer City is a lawless hellhole and the sense of dread, powerlessness and fear you feel once you realize Starkweather isn't playing anymore and sends the best corrupt cops money can buy, as basically his own personal death squad, is really a special horror experience. A lot of people criticized the later levels of Manhunt for being too gun heavy, and I can understand why. Trained to Kill and Border Patrol could get a bit ridiculous at times. But "Wrong Side Of The Tracks" did it perfectly, because stealth and ambush tactics, the core elements of the game, were still absolutely vital to survive it. The SWAT dudes are the rarest enemy in the game, but by far the most dangerous. The Cerberus could definitely mess your world up if you got backed into a corner surrounded by guys with M16s, but even then, they don't seem to be quite as intelligent and lethal as the SWAT team. They were arguably OP for sure, but this level really reinforces the feeling that you are not conquering this world, you're merely surviving it. And that's the best Cash, and the player, can do.

Why is that whenever trains are involved with Rockstar, they tend to be the most difficult to get by? State of the art technology in a stealth game called Flashlights here, a fat Gangster who can't aim in San Adreas, and a very small target to land on with a motorbike in GTA V.

This game is the epitome of what true fear is. No one is really scared of demons or monsters or some alien race. We're really scared of other people. Anyone who could be your neighbor or just somebody at the store they have a deep-seated urge to want to kill. I had to do a job at a prison one time I met some folks that act just like this. In the game the characters say some of the craziest stuff. For instance when one of the bad guys comes across a dead body I heard them say once. " Looks like someone overdid the punch"! The dead guy was missing his head entirely.

Nah the only one I found hard was Border Patrol. Trained to Kill was kind of hard until you figure out the strategy and just pray the AI doesn't mess up. In a literal sense, the term "Wrong side of the tracks" used to mean a town's industrial areas and the worker residences nearby. They're the sort of area where folks would be prone to criminal acts like getting mugged, though I guess in the setting of Manhunt that's the least of your worries.

I understand why they put guns in the second half of the game and yes they could've been done better, but I actually enjoy the shooting because it feels more tense. If there weren't any guns then the whole game would be a cakewalk and the gameplay would consist of "hit wall, wait for Hunter to walk over, execute". The shooting isn't great although it is pretty satisfying to shotgun guys in the face and see half their head blown off XD Hopefully if Manhunt 3 is made they can make the shooting a lot better.
