A dear friend of our families was in Okinawa. He never spoke about until he was in his 80s. The first unit he was with was sent to take a hill and he was the only one to survive. He was out with another unit and once again he was the only survivor. His third unit lost over half before they finally took the hill. It broke his heart to talk about it and after all those years he still loved and respected every friend he lost on that island. Amazing man! Amazing friend.

I can understand the part where they spit on the prisoners. Many of the Marines there were veterans who watched many, most or all of their closest friends die horribly at the hands of a ruthless enemy. An enemy who subjected them to conditions of torment not yet seen by the US military in combat anywhere at anytime for days, weeks and months. The Japanese would even display captured Marines horribly mutilated bodies for passersby to see. I don't blame them for spitting on them, honestly, that seems like restraint compared to what they could have done.
@wellthen.......93845 жыл бұрын
That was horrible what the Marines went through and that it was a meme fights that should have never happened but that's not the first time the United States has seen true horror in situations like that years before this look up the biscari massacre two men almost murdered a hundred prisoners of War for fun it was so bad that the US Army buried it and didn't let it come out until years after the war ended every war there is horrible and nasty things that happen it's just whether or not it gets reported or not there was no such thing as anyone who fought in World War II and came out clean nobody followed the Geneva Convention I mean technically initially they banned flamethrowers after World War 1 and then no country stuck to that and then they removed it because nobody was following it same thing happened with Medics

On the wet mortar rounds. The new guy took a good poncho that was protecting the ammo boxes and replaced it with the used shitty poncho SNAFU gave him. So the ammo got wet.

The Battle of Okinawa took place from April to June 1945. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place on the 6th and 9th of August 1945 respectively.

In fact Okinawa was one of the reasons why the bombs were dropped. They looked at the casualties and realized if they invaded the mainland losses would be in the millions for both sides.

One of the things that got me (or maybe it was in sledges book and not the series) was when they were in the hut with the baby and woman snafu says “lots of people fire mortars up here” after they notice the hole in the roof. It’s likely that sledge and snafu were on the gun that fired rounds into the hut and injured that woman.

When they say the hole in the roof, Snafu tried reasoning that lots of mortars had fired in the area but Sledge knew it was the spotting round he called in right before killing the enemy soldier with a pistol.

When you said everyone loses it at some point that is exactly how I feel I would have been on Okinawa. The Japanese told the locals we were cannibals and all kinds of other crazy stuff. They forced them in the charges like this episode and a bunch jumped off cliffs to kill themselves they were so scared of us from what they were told. A giant fucking tragedy.

If you are interested, there are three books that are the basis for this mini-series, The first is Helmet for my Pillow by Robert Leckie, the second is With the Old Breed by E.B. Sledge and the third is Red Blood, Black Sand, by Chuck Tatum. They took the bulk of content from the first two books but Tatum's book covers his experience training under Basilone for a brief time and then what he went through at Iwo Jima.

I don’t feel sorry for the Japanese about what they suffered through with our bombing campaign. They’ve never really atoned for their own actions during the war. Their treatment of POWs, the Rape of Nanking, Unit 731, Korean “comfort women”, and other Japanese war crimes makes me think they got off easy...
@ScottyDnB5 жыл бұрын
Philip Coggins I agree completely, the rape of nanking and unit 731 were not only horrific but a stain on humanity. The Japanese mentality was inhuman and the bombs saved a lot of lives.

"Just following orders" was a shitty excuse during Nuremburg and it's a shitty excuse now. Stop downplaying the poor innocent german soldier like he was tricked or duped into the genocide of russian peasants.

16:43 - So your saying you would rather stab a person to death, than one quick pull of a trigger ? WOW cold. Stabbing is much worse, depending on where you stab them, you can feel air rush in or out on your hands. And the worst is if the knife hits bone, your can feel the scraping of the blade throughout your whole arm.

Did u notice that the lil hut with the baby and dying mama was the hut that Snafu and Sledge put a mortar round in earlier? They knew it too. War is like this then and now. There’s always collateral damage. Sometimes you know you caused it. Justifiable or not, it’s something you WILL deal with forever.
