The Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica, which honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the Principal Patroness of the Philippines, is a well-known Latin Rite Roman Catholic basilica located in Manila, Philippines. It is situated in Manila's district of Intramuros; it was first built as a parish church under the ownership and jurisdiction of the Diocese of Mexico in 1571. On February 6, 1579, Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull recognizing it as a distinct diocese.
The cathedral is the highest seat of the Philippine archbishop and the nation's primary basilica. Since its original construction in 1581, the cathedral has suffered numerous damages and destructions. The cathedral's eighth and current version was finished in 1958. Pope Gregory XIII, Pope Paul VI, and Blessed Pope John Paul II have all bestowed upon the basilica three papal blessings and two Apostolic visits. On April 27, 1981, Pope John Paul II declared the cathedral a minor basilica by his own Motu Proprio, a papal law referred to as Quod Ipsum.
