Makati and Bonifacio Global City Cost of Living
Manila, Philippines has a low cost of living compared to other major cities around the world.
So how much does it cost to live in Manila?
$600 per month is possible, but not comfortable.
$1,000- $2,000 per month is comfortable. Most nomads and ex-pats I know live within this range.
$2,000+ per month and you can live quite nicely.
Coming up will show you what these budgets look like in Makati and BGC, two of Manila’s most popular destinations for ex-pats and location independent entrepreneurs.
Cost of Accommodations in Manila
Cost of living in Manila can vary considerably depending on your own level of comfort and convenience. Your accommodation will be your largest expense.
Best Neighborhoods in Manila
The urban development of Bonifacio Global City (or BGC) is a pedestrian-friendly, self-sustainable, and flood-free neighborhood and is my top choice for high-end city living. Makati is another popular area known for being a major business, cultural and entertainment hub in Metro Manila.
Here’s a breakdown of what you might find:
Basic Studio: $250 - $350 US
Simple Apartment: $450 - $600. USD
Nice Apartment: $600 - $1,000 USD
Luxury Apartment $1000+ USD
Monthly Overheads
Basic (Electricity, Heating, Cooling, Water, Garbage) $150.
Internet (60 Mbps or More, Unlimited Data, Cable/ADSL) $54.
Smartphone service will be another $15.
Fitness Club, Monthly Fee for 1 Adult $50. - $70.
Cost of Food in Manila
Local food can be tasty and very affordable.
Great international restaurants are found all over the city with a meal often costing less than $10. and local meals can be found for less than $4. If you shop at the local markets and stick to Filipino food brands and local fruits and vegetables you can spend less than $200 per month for all your meals.
Shopping in Manila
You can get just about anything in Manila however you will be paying a premium for anything imported, around 20% more. Locally made items will likely be much cheaper than in your home country.
Many items from around the world can be ordered on Amazon and Lazada, but not all products listed at Amazon USA are eligible for delivery to the Philippines.
Getting Around Manila
Jeepneys are the cheapest mode of transportation and most major roads and destinations are covered Buses are also available on main routes.
Travel from Manila
Filipinos are warm, friendly and helpful, and many speak English fluently. They are welcoming to different cultures and there is a large ex-pat community I Manila as well. It will be easy for ex-pats from all types of backgrounds to settle in Metro Manila. Filipinos are world-renowned for their hospitality and their friendliness.

Learn basic Tagalog so u won’t come across as fake. Some Tagalog speaking fil-ams (not you) pretend unable to speak Tagalog to impress, but it backfires. The educated locals won’t mind speaking English, but the help (maid, taxi driver, vendors) will not engage you much if at all. First impression is they won’t think you’re from the US since you look very Pinoy. Peace bro. Vote Gov Newsom out.

It all depends on your level of comfort. For me, $2,000 is wayyyy too low to be "comfortable" in Makati area. I will need at least $5,000 a month. Makati/BGC is not that cheap. A dinner for two can easily cost $50 to $100 if I'm eating out.

I was in Manila in April of last year. I was considering a move and stayed in Makati while doing the majority of my house-hunting in the BGC. Conclusion? It's more expensive for the same housing and amenities in the Manila area than where I currently live in the U.S. Side note: many relo'd expats I've encountered over the years don't have $1,000, much less $2,000, to live on monthly - which is a major reason why they moved overseas in the first place. You know, "higher standard of living for far less money." In many cases, they were ill-inforrned, under-financed, or, if they did research, believed the clowns who insisted $500/month was all one needed in places like Pattaya. That's one reason countries like Thailand are actively throwing indigent foreigners out these days (and, sorry to say, many of those "refugees" are winding up in Philippines!) Thank you for publishing realistic figures!

Hi $500 a momth is enough if you live a simple life and not rent in a condominium. There are a lot of good and comfortable apartments (not condominium but fully furnished) around makati and Taguig that cost around $120-$160 a month. Food here is cheap as well and if you could cook, then you could save more. Here's my monthly budget if you want a reference: RENT: $100 INTERNET: $30 (converge 25mbps) ELECTRIC AND WATER: I have AC so usually around $60-$70 FOOD: $100-$150 (I cook, sometimes order local food from local dining or small karinderya) SOAP, DETERGENT, SHAPOO AND OTHER: $60 (I wash my own clothes? TOTAL: $410 TO $460 a month. Hope that helps.

$600 is a lot of money for average locals. Only upper middle class and the rich can afford a place to live in Makati and BGC that isn’t a tiny ass dorm. Most of us who live outside the vicinity of Makati and BGC pay for room/apartment/house that can range from $50-$400. The apartment we used to live at in Mandaluyong was $60 a month. But my family has a condo in Makati that we’re renting out for $900.

400-500 USD can already serve you a decent condo unit in the Metro Manila. Believe it or not I just spend LESS THAN 100 USD per month for a decent bedspace here. Yeah, it will save you a lot especially if you're earning more

What about healthcare? How efficient it is? Is there a 911 for emergencies? For retirees excellent healthcare is very important.

US Medicare A/B is not available (except for some plans that include a 90 day travel&emergency care). There is a public tax supported scheme (Philhealth) for Philippine citizens. For expats there are many private insurance plans available like Maxicare and Blue Cross. There is a national emergency hotline 911 and specific emergency call to police (117) and the Red Cross (143). In BCG there is a world -class hospital (St Lukes Medical Center) staffed with English-speaking US & European trained specialists. US ; European and Japanese pharmacopoeia is widely available. Often prices are 1/2 to 1/5 US prices (example an inhaler of salbutamol cost $5-6 here ) Hope this helps.

Lived in Manila for 15 years. Health care is a joke, even at Makati Med and St Lukes. Went to the hospital 4 times during this time and misdiagnosed all 4 times. Now take the wife and son and fly to Singapore for anything more than a common cold. Completely incompetent doctors. Got quite a few Filipino friends who were drs or nurses in the US and came back to Manila for retirement. There are only a handful of doctors who would be considered world class from their perspective.

I would highly recommend making an exploratory trip for three months before making any firm decisions. Once you make some local friends you will find cheap ways to get around and great places to eat at a lower cost. It's easy to live below the costs I have listed here in the video. Find a monthly rental and try the area and building before committing to a long-term lease.

Yea. The prices are 30% higher than he has said...or even more. If you want to live here and own a place in BGC or Makati it will not be nearly as cheap as he has said. When you own an apartment you'll also pay a HOA of minimum $150 per month (for a 1 bedrrom apartment) to $275 per month (for a 3 bedroom apt), TV/internet of $150 and electrcity $100. That is basic living. Food in BGC and Makati is always over $10 per person per meal. I have lived in BGC for 11 yrs. I own a 1 bedroom and a 3 bedroom apartment/"unit". I know the costs. But I also live (for the last 4 yrs) in the province/rural area of Batangas. The prices that he states are more in line with the costs in rural Philippines.

my wife is Filipina and I go back and forth on us moving there after we save up more or if I start working remote, I am a software Engineer and the jobs there just don't pay what they do here in America, Anyway I really love Manila. I really like going to the malls there, it's really weird but their malls are next level cool, I really like the Mall of Asia where you can go outside and walk along the sea wall, they are like little cities. I don't care much for malls here, but over there they are cool. plus it's really just a nice place to be, I worry about the politics more than anything else. but I have always enjoyed it. I think it's one of those places that is comfortable if you have money but if I tried to live there on a Filapino wadge I would not have a good time.

I just replied to someone saying those prices were on the high end seeming not to realize the specific parts of Manila being discussed in this video. These are the two most expensive areas of metro Manila and yes the prices are very accurate for those areas. The video even mentions that prices are cheaper in other areas. Personally I'd suggest budgeting $3k+ monthly. $2k for expenses and an extra $1k to play with. If you want to enjoy a nice retirement in the Philippines "enjoy" should be the key word there. So need some extra money for travel and leisure. Also if you find a partner there that could significantly raise your expenses.

@@gardofuentes363 I'm not sure if you've ever been to the US, but in case you didn't know, the US has the most expensive health care cost in the world even with insurance. Medicare is only applicable for individuals who are earning a certain amount. Once you go above that then you're not eligible anymore. You now have to rely on your employer's insurance. Good luck getting medication in the US as well even with insurance.

If you work on BGC dont rent a condominium. it is better to rent around these areas which are really close to BGC: East rembo, Cembo, west rembo, Pembo or PALAR, pinagsama taguig. You are correct. Rent outside London is very liklely cheaper than in the 2 Manila areas discussed here. However you have to keep in mind that those 2 areas are the absolute hotspots, you will have access to pool, gym, 24 7 security, concierge, yadayada. So it's very convinient. But yes, it's definitely not cheap. You have the choice though if you dont need a posh neighbourhood you can live incredibly cheap
