The High Court of Manipur "was asking the State government to respond to the Central government in relation to the Meitei's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. That's all, nothing more nothing less. It did not direct anybody to give Schedule Tribe status to Meitei. But it was blown out of proportion, locally". Before this, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, GOI, wrote a letter dated 29 May 2013 to Manipur government asking to furnish recommendations along with the latest socio-economic survey and ethnography report by an organisation of repute for consideration of the proposal for inclusion of Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list of Manipur. The final decision lies with the Central government. The HC of Manipur did nothing wrong in this regard. They simply asked the State to respond to the Central government. Thank you Shri Siddharth Mridul, the retired Chief Justice of Manipur High Court for this clarification. The causes of Manipur turmoil have also been highlighted well to clear any misunderstanding.

The ST status was only for 10 years which has been extended, understandably. But the Indian constitution must be amended and we must all move towards the direction of General category in the long run. Where all the people are General in nature and all have the equal rights to education, to Jobs, to buy land, etc. Tribes will remain as identity but not as a reservation. Instead people are moving backwards for reservation for political gain in the short run. Citizens must be educated to vote the right agenda with the right leader and must be educated to not protest when the reservation is removed. It will take away the comfort for short run but in the long run, the big picture is worth it.
