per usual, the way you break down a technique's many options is thorough and relatable. i've been watching your videos on a regular basis to help improve my bouldering and i can't thank you enough for taking the time to share your knowledge. keep up the great work and know that it doesn't go unnoticed.

Fellow Monkeys, a big chunk of work is done! I proudly present the complete analysis of yet another Rock Climbing Technique for Intermediates: Hooks! I hope you learned something you didn’t know already, like I did during the making of this tutorial. If you did, please leave a like, it helps a lot, share your opinion, share it with some climbing mates who like to climb PROPERLY, and don’t forget to subscribe for future technique episodes. Thank you for your attention, I’ll see you soon!

Always a pleasure watching your instructional videos. As a visual learner, it helps me a lot watching you perform the moves and explain the pros and cons. A lot to absorb but that is where the fun lies - working and testing it out with every challenge.

Very thorough analysis! What I've observed on many of the pros is that they start with what you would call the frontal heel and as they get higher, they turn it into a lateral heel and pull their hip into the wall by rotating the leg around the knee (if that makes sense). If you watch Adam Ondra for instance, you rarely see him do a heel hook that doesn't involve the lateral heel to a degree. For me that was a reason to focus on those lateral heels more than the frontal heels. Cheers for this really good video!

Most comprehensive video i've seen, can't wait to practice these new tips. It's been my weak spot, could only use toes so far and only in very rare circumstances hooks. I knew there was way more to it, just couldn't figure out how. Thanks much!

as usual, brilliant video. I feel like these more subtle refinements in footwork are often the ones that climbers struggle with the most to learn, so big ups for such a detailed yet easy to understand explanation. I always hear people complain 'i suck at heel hooks' which is a pity because often they can be so advantageous (or mandatory)!

Great video Manny! I find that sometimes that when I'm heel hooking and I need to make a big reach to a hold above it helps to have my hanging foot push off of another hold that is lower than the heel hooking hold. I think it has to do with using the hamstring less so that there's less of a chance of the heel popping off, which is really important to me when I'm topping out a boulder outdoors. Also we call the pinching of a hold between a toe hook and normal toe placement a bike in the US (and the UK I believe) because if it's really extreme (the two holds that are being squeezed to create tension are far apart) it looks like you're riding a bike. Keep up the great content!
@ManitheMonkey8 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! And thanks for the awesome input! Good to know it's called a bike, never heard that before.
@PeriklisRipis8 жыл бұрын
that called Bicycling ;-) One foot pushing, the other pulling, like riding a bike. This can be done on one hold (the typical definition) or different holds where one foot is toeing in and the other is toehooking.
