These people are so nonchalant about the whole ordeal. It's like they've done it many times before. One moment they're talking about how the wife didn't believe the stone skeletons were real skeletons, the next they're just accepting that reanimated skeletons are a real thing, and wondering why one skeleton isn't reanimated like the rest. True RPG game protagonists. The dungeon is already lit up and nobody questions it, there are very old lore notes everywhere explaining things, and skeleton enemies to fight.

Fun Fact so ignore this if you don't want massive info dump: torches are not a historical light source. A torch held in front of the body, as is comfortable, will blind the wielder with glare. Holding the torch far enough behind the body to prevent this glare is uncomfortable, especially over time. Torches not made using clean-burning modern chemical fuels are very smokey and short-lived, so it is not a great way to light a place for any lengthy period of time. Actual torches were used only sparingly, mostly to start large fires where a small flame like that you could carry on a twig or candle would not be adequate. Yes, you basically used torches just to set things on fire that you wanted to see burn, like people, buildings, ovens, braziers, forests, and bonfires. To see in dark places, embers burning with dull red light, like in a brazier or fire-pit, were the norm, producing little smoke, lasting for a long time, causing little glare, and of course were good for heating as well. Small flames powered by a hydrocarbon fuel, such as candles or olive-oil lamps, were what you used if you wanted a mobile light source to carry around, and they were quite dim, but bright enough to at least see a couple feet in front of you. Indeed, before the 19th century with its new chemical and electrical lighting technologies, people really had no practical way of brightly lighting a dark place for long. Because of this, Movies adapted the torch to be lighting because it was figured out early that if one used realistic lighting for medieval scenes in the dark, one wouldn't be seeing much, and that is not so entertaining. By way of a fun exercise, if you want to see a realistically-lit pre-modern-lighting scene in a movie, Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon has such a scene where only candle and brazier lights were used on set. It took a LOT of candles and braziers, but that is what you had to do to see more than a few feet in front of you at that time. If you are still reading this, ummm, thanks? ManlyBadAssHero rules!

An exception would be the Polynesian lamalama torch. Those are made by stringing stacks of dried kukui nuts onto a bamboo rod. One nut on the top is set on fire, and as it slowly burns, the burning oil from that nut drips down onto the next nut and sets it alight, then repeat. These torches can last quite a while and are traditionally used for torch fishing.

A pattern i noticed in some of Manly's videos is that some of the developers of a theoretical game actually watch Manly's gameplay of their game and take criticism or leave a comment regarding their throughts. I've never really seen many KZbinrs that have this pattern, and it is quite a sight to encounter in his gameplay videos. This is probably because the games Manly plays are so diverse, that some of the them are made by novice developers, so they may decide to seek out other's experiences with their creations.

I feel like, if you're gonna go shlock, you have to go full shlock, y'know? And this game certainly managed that. It didn't care about plot holes, it didn't try to make its protagonists' reactions believable, and we got a good ol' dose of "you are inside the beast". Not a scary experience, but a fun little romp through an old god tomb. Also, I like to think that the locals directed the invaders there deliberately to get them killed. In which case, good on them! Smart thinking. "Gold? Well, there _is_ the old forbidden tomb. But we would _never_ suggest you go there. It's cursed, you know. You'll all die." And then the moment the soldiers ride off everyone's laughing up their sleeves and going "That's the end of that!"

What about papyrus, how could those papers survive for so long, including the writings?
@MothemOfficial4 жыл бұрын
@@VanillaEnigma it depends on the environment. Papyrus is a unique case, due to dry and warm air of the east, and it being sealed up for several hundreds (sometimes thousands) of years. That said, papyrus is still very delicate after such a long time. I don't major in Eastern archeology, but the difference here is that the paper is in what I would judge to be a wet and exposed area. This would cause it to rot extremely fast.
@VanillaEnigma4 жыл бұрын
@@MothemOfficial Yeah I figured that papyrus would be an interesting case considering it was, like you mentioned, preserved well due to its hot and dry environments, sometimes completely in the dark tombs of pyramids. In the context of the game, regular paper wouldn't likely survive the humidity and heat or even rain of what appears to be an Amazon-like environment, featuring a pastiche of Mesoamerican cultures, especially that temple. Heh, well I'll stop rambling. Happy digging!

Kind of made me consider combining the idea of an in-universe camera like what we have here with the trope of the supernatural elements not showing up on film. So you, as the player, aren't able to see whatever ghosts or other monsters or environmental changes are going on, but instead have to rely on characters' reactions to things to figure out what exactly is up. Maybe you get an upgrade to the camera later on that allows the characters to actually capture the stuff on film, giving you context to all the stuff the characters have been reacting to throughout the game.

Others see them as laden with symbols of our unconscious desires.
