A cool background is that Big Boo's haunt made itself into Peach's castle making Peach a possible anchor for the ghost. Consequently, it corrupted Peach as she now is wreaking havoc across her castle. Mario was dispatched to quell it and find a possible way to revert Peach back while avoiding her.

I actually got scared the first time the ghost princess was introduced. The design isn't even terrifying, and it didn't happen at such a fast pace, but the ambience was so slow and damnening that it actually got me tensed enough to be scared of that jumpscare.

It's partly his voice but for me it's mostly his demeanor. Manly doesn't over the top scream in my face constantly and the commentary is often interesting and/or witty, we've got lotsa inside jokes and stuff too, it's satisfying.

You could really extend this story by showing several characters that went to visit Peach's Castle and never came back, leading up to Mario himself going. Mario and Luigi/Toad go, and one of them gets got early on to show something is wrong with Peach. And you have to go around collecting the souls of everyone to save them while avoiding Peach, lest you join them.

If I understand it correctly then a hovering AI means that the AI chasing you is programmed to *always* strive to be in your general area (as in, “hover” around you). In comparison, a patrolling AI is just set to patrol along a fixed route until it either spots the player (where upon it will go into chase mode) or notices something it’s programmed to view as suspicious and goes off to investigate it. Now do note, I am no programmer and this is just how I understand it.

There's so many types of AI behaviors, and Manly picks up on them so quickly that I was wondering if he had some behind-the-scenes knowledge or is mostly used to it from his years of experience by now. On one hand I love the ingenuity of really smart AI, but on the other hand generic patrol routes are so much easier to play against. This type of AI is hella stressful, which makes it effective as a horror game.

My Head cannon would like to think that this takes place after Mario has turned really old, hence why he is not as athletic as he was and has a stamina bar. The Peach apparition is cause bowser kidnapped her and accidently killed her, but Mario couldn't save her, so now she is behind Mario as a ghost cause of her rage, and Mario probably just went back to the castle to look at how the castle is like nowadays after all the years passed.

having played this game, its neat that its being updated. the hovering-type behavior does add to the tension, and the earlier version had the box in the bob-omb room blind to the door, so im glad that was changed. on another note, using the "mario?" voice lines is also a nice touch that's a recent addition :>

I absolutely love the ghost princess idle patrol model. It's an alternate world where Mario didn't rescue Peach and Bowser took the kingdom. Those statues are full of nostalgia for people that played it back in the day. Very cool demo, but I kind of wish the sudden end threw Manly a bone/did something silly. Cool concept tho~

"Demo" has become a total misnomer these days, I think from the amount of games with "demos" which ultimately never followup a full release. I'm convinced that most people think that "demo" just means, "short game" now.

I like how when Manly moved behind Peach, she went "huh?" Rather than immediately entering chase. It implies she has an alert phase as well as a patrol and chase phase. A lot of thought went into such a simple concept.

Oh man, this is some good DLC. Seems like Nintendo never forgets its games since they've updated a decades old classic! I bet all their shops are still up, and they're working on updating games that's already out! I have the utmost confidence that they'll never make people buy the same thing over and over again to capitalize on nostalgia, that wouldn't be the wholesome company we know and love. :3

I think the best way this game could be expanded into a full release is to break it up into three levels, each with a different enemy with their own mechanics. Just to throw some ideas around, level one is just the demo. Peach is a simple, slow-moving enemy that begins chasing you when she sees you. Level 2 would start once you reach the basement. Peach stays on the main floor and never follows you down there, however, the Piano, or some other creepy enemy, would patrol the oddly labyrinthian basement, instead. They could be much faster, and even impossible to escape once they see you, but as they move about, they constantly make loud crashing piano noises, meaning you can generally tell where they are at all times, and simply need to avoid them at all costs. Level three would be the upstairs, and the enemy could be some demonic King Boo or something. Fast, stealthy, can typically tell where you are at all times, and never really makes noise. Like all boos, though, staring at them stops them dead in their tracks. Basically, they'd be like SCP-173, just always trying to sneak up on you. Once you make it past the endless staircase and up to the top (presumably the end goal of the game), you would have to make a stealthy beeline for the exit as all three spawn at once, each more aggressive than in their first encounter.
