This is by far, bar none, the best and more accurate rendition of this piece I have seen to date. Not only is it, note for note, perfection on every level, it really takes people who know the text to bring it to life. It is frequently done far too slowly, or even with the feel of a march, when the text is very bawdy, bordering on raunchy for the time it was written, a tale of forbidden and secret passion... stealing away to the chamber door of the desired one, quietly tapping, then knocking for entry... sleep not when the passion of love speaks... VERY well preformed with physical expression, watch the interplay between tenor 1 and bass 2... fantastic!

Until seeing this video, Dame Janet Baker's recording has been what I considered the perfect performance of this piece (introduced to it in 1981 and promptly fell in love). My opinion has changed, THIS is the perfect interpretation of Standchen. The emoting of each of the performers elevates the vocal excellence.

The intimate approach here is delightful. This enters my pantheon of favorite interpretations of this Biedermeier chestnut, along with those by Alfreda Hodgson, Janet Baker, Sarah Walker, Christa Ludwig, and Bethan Langford. Props to the accompanist ... his introduction was so enchanting, I had a moment of worrying that the rest of the performance might not live up to it. A worry that I'm glad to say was entirely needless.
@billcullum016 жыл бұрын
While I agree that this is a charming performance I find you reference to "Biedermeier chestnut",which in this context means "something (such as a musical piece or a saying) repeated to the point of staleness", jarring. Do you think Winterreise is a chestnut? Beethoven's 9th? All Biedermeier; all performed more frequently than Ständchen, D 920. I'm not looking for a fight, just clarification.
@t1serres1316 жыл бұрын
I was using the word as a synonym for "old favorite" ... a connotation suggested by the OED. I wasn't really following Webster. I was thinking too that "chestnut" implies a minor work, not a magnum opus such as the two that you reference.
@antoinehazan4293 жыл бұрын
"Biedermeier chestnut"... c'est l'un des plus purs miracles de la musique, égal en son genre de la Grande Fugue ou du requiem de Mozart, avec un don de vision peut-être encore supérieur... c'est d'ailleurs ce que pensait Beethoven, qui était tombé à la renverse en lisant les partitions de certains lieder; "l'auteur de cette musique-là est meilleur que moi." Une telle musique change la face de l'univers

Why do so many sopranos want to sing mezzo ?
@susanfilip22865 жыл бұрын
a soubrette is not a mezzosoprano....
@annejennings76992 жыл бұрын
Not all mezzos have big heavy voices. She's a light fresh mezzo - and she's lovely!
@tristanberger85002 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I personally don't think even the singer believes she is a mezzo-soprano. Most of the "super light mezzo-sopranos" of today had problems in the high register. This singer is lovely indeed, but without any touch of a mezzo. Being a soprano is not a disgrace, but allowing sopranos to swim along in the mezzo fach is. I don't blame the singer but all those who don't realise it and think they are experts.
@annejennings76992 жыл бұрын
@@tristanberger8500 My opinion is that the classifications (soprano, mezzo, tenor, baritone, bass-baritone, bass) aren't very helpful. Each individual has a tessitura, along with other vocal qualities that may make their voice more suitable for some musical than for other pieces. I'm happy to let them all try anything they want (including counter-tenors singing in their range - which again varies, also varies in their voice type).
@tristanberger85002 жыл бұрын
@@annejennings7699 The composers usually knew very well why they cast a piece with which voice and when. Example: If a Queen of the Night is casted by a soubrette, she is simply too harmless for that role. A soubrette has all the notes, but is not dramatic for the part. -
@tristanberger85002 жыл бұрын
@@annejennings7699 Your attitude , Anne, isn't helpful for any opera and good classical singing. When a woman's voice comes above an orchestra only in the upper register, it is a sure proof that it is a soprano. A true mezzo-soprano retains her colour unaltered in all registers. At what point a voice moves into the lower register to be heard is the decisive guide. This singer looks like a soubrette, sounds like a soubrette, but she lacks the technique to sing as a soubrette-THATS WHY she sings mezzo- how she sings, nature has given her.
